Measure theory is used primarily by Khinchin and his students, but similar work is posed in terms of probability theory and other contexts by other mathematicians. Once this is understood (and it is hinted at by a footnote or two from the translator), this material becomes as accessible as the rest of the material.The book begins with a minor aside in a proof of convergence of continued fractions that have real partial numerators and denominators, whose partial numerators are all unity, and the sum of whose partial denominators diverges. Since the simple classical number-theoretic continued fractions are the subject of the book, this proof clearly includes all such continued fractions. This minor excursion from number theory and algebra is a significant advantage to this particular book as it provides a bedrock for later rate-of-convergence discussions.The related field of analytic theory of continued fractions that was explored by Riemann, Stieltjes, Tchebychev, Padé, Hamburger, Cesà ro, and others that are contemporary to Khinchin (memorable classic by H.S. Wall was published in 1948, long after this book was written), is not ignored entirely.

Continued fractions are fractions with multiple denominators; e.g., the golden ratio = 1+1/(1+1/(1+..., the square root of 2 = 1+1/(2+1/(2+.... Indeed, all quadratic irrationals have repeating continued fractions, giving them a convenient and easily memorable algorithm. Continued fractions may be truncated at any point to give the best rational approximation. For example 1/pi = 113/355 -- something that is very easy to remember (note the doubles of the odd numbers up to five). Therefore, an excellent approximation for pi becomes 355/113. The fraction approximates pi to an error better than 3E-7, more than accurate enough for any practical use including astronomy. Thus for both transcendental and analytical irrationals, continued fractions are enormously useful.Never heard of them? You're not alone. The first recorded instance of continued fractions was by Lord Brouncker in the 17th century which makes them a relatively new addition to mathematics. Nor are they taught in typical undergraduate scientific curricula. Notwithstanding, if they were discovered by the Pythagoreans, history may have been much different.The Pythagoreans were a mystical sect that believed that all things geometric could be described by rational numbers (i.e., wholes and fractions). Something like the square root of two was clearly geometric (the diagonal of the unit square) yet, irrational. Legend has it that Hippasus (5th century B.C.) was expelled from (or killed by) the Pythagorean school for proving the irrationality of a number such as the square root of 2 or the golden ratio. This ultimately destroyed the Pythagorean religion. Had the theory of continued fractions been discovered at this time, irrationals would have been reduced to infinite fractions of whole numbers and the religion may have well survived until (or perhaps interfered with) the advent of Christianity.This monograph by the Russian mathematician, Aleksandr Khinchin, is a very inexpensive way to obtain a good introduction. The author died in 1959, however, his third edition of the book was translated into English in 1964 and revised in 1997. The monograph is less than 100 pages and organized into three chapters: I. Properties of the Apparatus; II. The Representation of Numbers by Continued Fractions; III. The Measure Theory of Continued Fractions. The book also has a brief and inadequate index.Some of the fascinating things one will learn is that if a/b < c/d then the value (a+c)/(b+d) is always intermediate: a/b < (a+c)/(b+d) < c/d. Repeated application of this algorithm gives an infinitely divisible and ordered sequence of rational numbers; e.g., the infinite sequence 1/1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4... 0/1 is one such application of the theorem. One can also prove that 355/113 is the best three digit rational approximation to pi -- a result of remarkable accuracy. One will also learn that all rational numbers can be represented by finite continued fractions. For example, 54/17 = 3+1/(5+1/(1+1/2)). Therefore, continued fractions are capable of representing all real numbers: some as finite fractions (e.g. 54/17 or any rational), some as non-terminating repeating fractions (e.g., square root of 2 or any quadratic root), some as non-repeating non-terminating fractions having a pattern [e.g., Euler's constant, e = 2+1/(1+1/(2+1/(1+1/(1+1/(4+1/(1+1/(1+1/(6+....], and others as non-terminating non-repeating fractions without pattern [e.g., pi = 3 + 1/(7+1/(15+1/(1+1/(292+1/(1+1/(1+...]. Regarding the latter, if one can derive an infinite series representation, then it is possible to recast the regular continuing fraction (numerator of 1s) as an irregular continuing fraction having a pattern [e.g., pi = 3+1/(6+9/(6+25/(6+49/(6+...].Thus, continued fractions are a powerful mathematical device, and this book provides a reasonable if not brief introduction.

An OK book. Not technically difficult, basically just high-school algebra. Has a nice proof on page 16 that a finite continued fraction (CF) is a rational number and an infinite one is an irrational number. And around page 48, a proof that the solution of a quadratic equation can be written as a infinite CF. Thereafter is a lot of stuff about convergence and something called measure theory.My one quibble is that it is all theoretical. I was hoping for specific examples - like an infinite continued fraction that equals eg square root of 2 - but there was nothing like that. Fortunately that sort of thing can be found easily with a web search, esp. Wikipedia.

Covers some ideas using Continued Fractions. It doesn't really go into depth, but it is a pretty thin book. I bought this book a few weeks ago to brush up on some of my unused math learning, and to learn some more about continued fractions. I know they can be used to expand expressions and to define stuff like the value of pi, but the author didn't really cover stuff like that. Rather than having examples, he went into the more general cases. I don't have that much experience in that kind of thing, my math stops short at the end of Calculus II, but it was pretty informative.

Short, readable book, wealth of applications, this little gem provides a doorway into deep number theory. Gives insight into transcendence theory, as well as bicycle gearing -- Huygen's problem. There are some minor typographic errors scattered about the text which are annoying, especially for such a typographic challenge as continued fractions. For the price, you can't go wrong.

This is a great book by a master. You need to have taken a course in analysis, and have some idea about measure theory, to appreciate it.

The first two chapters are an excellent introduction for the subject. Though the book lacks examples and exercises, the first chapter is very well explained and organised letting us (the begginers) to grasp the main concepts of what continued fractions are.From the middle of chapter two onwards, it gets way more convoluted and the proofs much harder to understand.For the book price it is a very recommendable purchase.

That covers it pretty accurately.The Percabeth reunion! Perfection. It was done in true Percabeth form. "Hi, sweetheart, I'm sorry I went missing for six months after a nutty goddess stole my memory. Give me a kiss and then we'll go stop the vicious goddess of Earth from rising." I mean, what else did I expect?Coach Hedge. I freaking love Coach Hedge; he's the perfect non chaperone chaperone to have on the "Argo II."I loved seeing the "Big Seven" together for the first time (even if it wasn't the great first meeting) and I really enjoyed watching them grow as a team as the book went on.I love each of the "Big Seven" but seriously, how can anyone not love Leo Valdez? The part with Leo and Echo and Narcissus had me laughing out loud. Oh goodness. Such a great moment.The performing giants! Glad to see that the monsters are broadening their horizons a bit. Killing demigods just doesn't pay the bills, you know.Annabeth is such a boss! I was literally cheering for her when she was on her journey, and she came out victorious! I read this author's first book Iranian Rappers And Persian Porn, it was an interesting look at life inside Iran, and of what an interesting country it is. He discussed many areas of the country that many people myself included just aren't exposed to living in the West. You also get to know well, the people living there who he encounters. Just just superficially. There were hints regarding the author's very liberal political beliefs but overall he kept his opinions to himself. I had hoped Socialist Dreams and Beauty Queens would be similar to his first book, but this time about Venezuela, and in the beginning it was. Sadly Mr Maslin, soon becomes an enormous socialist, and a conspiracy theorist. The book came out in 2011, and so sadly the author who thought it was neat and wonderful all the fabulous programs Chavez instituted in Venezuela, didn't have the benefit of seeing what a complete disaster those programs have become for the country. In the author's mind anyone who pisses off America must be doing something right. He then runs down Obama ( who while not my idea of a great president, is still the president of the most powerful country in the world, but not a king, or a dictator- unlike Chavez, and his successor, and therefore can't just do whatever he wants to) for not achieving everything he said he would do. Later the author loses all credibility when he hooks up with a couch surfing Australian who is a 9/11 nutter who claims to be an engineer working to explain how Tower 7 collapsed without having had significant fires or being hit by a plane. Young British and Australian writers who seem to love to discuss politics usually end up instead showing how ignorant they are of the world. They cite obscure sources to support and back up their claims and beliefs and overlook or ignore anything that doesn't support their narrative. Even in 2010 kinnapings are rampant and robbery and murder are daily occurrences but the author seems alright with this because Chavez is doing so many great things for the poor people of his country.In the case of British writers who are of a liberal bent, they don't seem to get that the sun set on the British empire a long long time ago ( I felt the same about Simon Winchester and his book Pacific, which totally suffered from these same failings). They also don't seem to be particularly troubled by all the damage Britain caused. In the case of Australia, and their liberal bent writers, I don't know if it is the isolation of the country, the history and origins of its people, or what, but Australia suffers from a Napoleon complex. Their land mass is as large as the USA, but their significance on the world stage is insignificant, and likely always will be.Back to the book. He does travel to some very interesting areas of the country, and his ability to explain what he is experiencing, and where appropriate give facts and details that may not be commonly known, were done to an excellent degree in this book, as well has his first book.The politics of the people he encounters who live in Venezuela and how life has changed for them is relevant, interesting and important. The author's politics, and not relevant to the story, are not of interest, and add nothing positive to the book. If he had left his politics out of this book, the book would have been far better.

A quiriky yet insightful inside vie of modern Venezuela. The writer has that droll sense of humor found in so many british travel writers.

There is something about Achaemenid Persia I have found fascinating since I read my parents battered paperback couple of Mary Renault's The Persian Boy. So I was really happy to take this on and see what new and interesting aspects that a biography of Xerxes would hopefully deliver.It did not. Instead I found that this was more a compilation of Xerxes in literature and historical mention. There is heavy focus on his invasion of Greece, but that is more of a detailing of others and what they did. There is climatic focus on his death possibly being due to his attempts at an affair.But I found the structure odd. There was no strong chronological flow which a biography should employ in my opinion. And there was way too much referencing to literary 'references'. Some of whom I have a hard time seeing as possible experts on a man that clearly has not had significant archaeologic finds to allow for such a new book to hit shelves. Lord Byron might have found him interesting and a subject worth writing about. I agree whole heartedly But I'm not sure Byron is historical apt or anywhere near correct in his assessments. In fact too many of the mentions of Xerxes fall into some kind of agenda driven usage. Few if any of the Greeks who wrote about him close enough in any way to be slightly authentic, do so without picking a 'side' in the whole East versus West aspect.And Stoneman does address this. But in a way I feel is too little too late. Too much is left in the hands of others who have already decided the role Xerxes played simply because of the side they were writing from. Even later literary personages like Byron see him solely through the eyes of one side.I guess if you want a book that does a good job of collecting (though not presenting) tons of references to Xerxes as a figure that appears elsewhere (think of it as the biographical equivalent of his IMDB page -- as a character though) this could work well in that regard. If you want a strong biography of a significant historical character, sadly it is not here in my opinion.

Most of us in the West know Xerxes as the Persian king who lost a war against the Greeks. Popular historians have often depicted him as indolent and indulgent. The movie 300 is probably the most prominent depiction of Xerxes in pop culture in recent years. If nothing else, Richard Stoneman tries to disabuse readers of those prior conceptions in his new biography “Xerxes,” the first major biography of the king in decades.Stoneman argues that Xerxes was likely not the caricature history has often depicted. He puts the Greek war in perspective, noting that Xerxes continued to rule 15 years after his defeat at Salamis. Instead, Stoneman points to Xerxes’ public building projects at Persepolis as his true mark on history. He also points out that, far from being a womanizer, for most of his life Xerxes had only one wife and seemed devoted to her.Stoneman even manages to put Xerxes’ supposed cruelty in context. In traditional Persian conceptions of kingship, the king symbolized the kingdom. So when Xerxes asked soldiers to depart from a ship to allow the king to board – leading to their certain death – we should view that as not simply cowardice but as a testament to the importance of the king.Stoneman is excellent at finding new ways of understanding ancient Persian political culture. Yet, as he seems to admit, he can’t bring Xerxes “to life” for modern readers. Part of this is due to the lack of sources; we can’t psychoanalyze Xerxes without data. But Stoneman’s writing also tends to be dry. Stoneman spends much of the book countering the more dramaticized popular depictions of Xerxes, so perhaps his style is deliberate.Stoneman’s book is geared more towards historians than for the general public. He references other scholars and historical figures with little explanation or context. If you don’t know who Themistocles is before going into the book, this probably isn’t for you. However, if you’re familiar with the basic history of the time and want help separating myth from reality, Stoneman is a good guide.(For readers looking for a dramatic retelling of the Greco-Persian War, I recommend Tom Holland’s Persian Fire.)[I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review]

This is the best book in AI, robots, and their implications for the future that I have read in at least a decade, and certainly the most relevant for where we stand as a society today. The author's prose is exceptionally readable and creative. It incorporates a summary of ideas already in circulation (and thus is appropriate for someone without a background in AI), and also introduces original ideas that I have not seen anywhere else. I highly recommend this book.

It's nice to find a book on AI that straddles the line between being enjoyable and easy to follow without sacrificing any of the nuance and depth of this challenging topic. While we can probably agree that the exact future of AI has a lot of unknowns, and hence potential dangers, it doesn't change the fact that we can choose to view the possibilities through an optimistic lens, as Reese does here.Throughout the book, Reese takes apart the ominous headlines we so often hear in the news and provides more clarity around the topic. For example, the notion that '47% of jobs are at risk of being automated' is shown to be effectively a mis-reading of the reports authors, who more accurately concluded that roughly 47% of common tasks could be automated, but those tasks are spread out among many occupations.I do think more time could have been spent in the earlier chapters outlining the first three ages, and what clearly separates them, but the point stands that we have had very few technological shifts that have the capacity to dramatically shift the course of human history and development.This is a great book for looking back on where we've been and equipping the reader with the information necessary to form their own ideas about where we might be going next.

The author does a poor job from both journalism and science perspectives. In fact, the second half of the book seems to be a bunch of filler, concerning other topics about the future and how 'great' our civilization has been and will be, rather than keeping to topic. Fine, so the author is an optimist. An optimist paying close attention to page count rather than the demands of the topic. The first half of the book is hardly better. Instead of an analysis, the author asks dozens (maybe hundreds) of rhetorical questions, and concludes that your answers to the basic ones establish what you expect / believe will happen with AI and robotics. These are questions concerning whether you believe the soul or consciousness are unique to humans or can accept that mathematical calculations are all that is fundamentally involved. However, the book becomes a real let down when it regurgitates these answers to tell you what you think. Doh. Ask yourself if you want to buy a book that tells you more about yourself than the topic. The book has essentially no references, which reflects the fact that it is just a long essay. A cop out. And a waste of time.

I was especially impressed with Byron Reese's analytical comparison of the human brain to current and projected AI computers. He really does a very thoughtful presentation of the differences between human traits of caring, sensitivity, love and planning for the best possible future world for humanity. IMHO, too many AI books paint an "end of humanity" perspective as Artificial General Intelligence takes over the World.As a footnote, a friend and I just finished teaching a course on AI for our local Osher Lifelong Learning organization.

This a fast-paced read. There's a lot to unpack and wrap your mind around when considering, imagining, and planning for a dramatically different future with ubiquitous AI, automation, prediction, AGI, the future of work and jobs and what that might mean for our identity and purpose. Reese brings fresh insights to all the big questions and a dozen others. His optimism about humanity is unusual and delightful without glossing over the serious, deep thinking on "what could possibly go wrong". I would love to live in the world that he believes we are building and appreciate his framing so each of us can bring considered thinking to how we deploy and integrate these technologies in our lives.
