Before reading this book, I possessed only a superficial knowledge of Cocteau, founded mainly on his stunning movie, Beauty and the Beast. If you can make it through this tome (no small task), you'll know as much as you can ever know about a person from a biography.This book is difficult to follow at times, because the author has a penchant for identifying people by their creative works, rather than their names. However, it was worth persevering to learn how disappointingly petty and rivalrous the various artistic factions of Cocteau's milieu were. It shatters the illusion that artists are more evolved than the rest of us! Cocteau rose above this squabbling for the most part, but it did him little good it seems. Picasso and Genet come off particularly bad.

What a tome! More than I really ever thought I might learn about Cocteau!

The only sense in which this pretentious biography of Cocteau is "monumental" is with regard to its wrist-breaking weight. Rather like a chunk of concrete sprayed with day-glow colours and cheap glitter, Claude Arnaud's prose attempts to dazzle, but it only succeeds in embarrassing. After struggling through 1000 pages (incl. footnotes and acknowledgements) of uncritical adulation of a man who may have been "multi-talented", as his biographer insists, but sadly lacked the discipline to create anything with intellectual depth, I have an even lower opinion of Cocteau than before. And this tome is definitely NOT a reliable social history, as the cover blurb maintains. It is a repetitious, uncritical hymn to a man who can, at best, be pitied for his emotional immaturity, his opium addiction, and his serious misjudgements. (Perhaps the most disturbing passages in this book are Arnaud's attempt to excuse Cocteau's admiration of Adolf Hitler.) I had recently read Edmund White's entertaining biography of Jean Genet and Jean-Yves Tadié's magisterial study of Marcel Proust, and was expecting something of similar quality. What a disappointment!

I am delighted that I purchased this book. It is by far the best book I have read in the field of Derivatives. First, it is very comprehensive, covering all derivative classes from futures and options, through interest rate swaps to credit derivatives.More importantly, the material is presented in a readable way without compromising mathematical rigor. With an experience on Wall Street and an advanced degree in finance, I find it extremely hard to find material that keeps a good balance between an analytical and academic presentation, and relevancy to the industry. This book is successful in meeting this challenge - using plenty of trading strategies, case studies, examples and problem sets, the book speaks both the language of the academic ivory tower and that of the trading floors on Wall Street.If you have any interest in this field - this is a must have book.

This book is great for learning some depth to derivatives for those who aren't mathematicians. Derivatives are very complex and heavy in math but this book will give you good insight and the general intuition. Overall it is a very helpful book if you are interested in derivatives of all sorts with minimal math.

In 1969, a group of young, primarily Puerto Rican activists founded the Young Lords Party in New York City, taking inspiration from the Black Panther Party. They summarized their political beliefs and goals in a 13-point program, published and distributed a newspaper called PALANTE and produced a weekly radio show on WBAI also called PALANTE.Iris Morales is an activist, educator, media Producer and author who has spent her life in the struggle for human rights and Puerto Rican liberation. A member of the Young Lords for five years, she rose through the ranks to become Deputy Minister of Education and leader of the Women’s Union. !Palante, Siempre Palante!, her award-winning documentary about the Young Lords was broadcast on national public television and continues to be screened widely in colleges and community venues across the United States. This book used to be very hard to find but has recently been re-issued. The Young Lords were such an important organization, similar to the Black Panthers but with unique innovations. Their occupation of New York City's Lincoln Hospital in 1970, along with revolutionary hospital workers, is of particular interest. They also liberated a city-run tuberculosis x-ray truck. The city had tested 300 people in a week, neglecting the much greater needs of the community, but the Young Lords examined 300 people in a day while they had the truck, showing the community how much better things could be run if the people took over.The book bursts with the eager optimism of the Young Lords in their own voices at the time. It's an incredible document of the hope and possibility of that moment.

Very happy with the book. Better condition than I expected. The only suggestion I would submit is that on larger flexible books I would put cardboard or something. Because it did not say "do not bend" my postman rolled it up into a tight roll and shoved it in my mailbox.

I am in Government Contracting and this book is very informative and can be used as a very good tool.Also in reference to the review talking about spelling errors, I'm not sure how old your dictionary is but "definitized" and "estopped" are words. Check Merriam-Webster, Online m-w.com.

This book was written for quick reference only. I was not impressed. It was written well, but boring. I did learn from, but I wish I would have tried something different.

The book is certainly packed with a lot of valuable information, and I suggest purchasing it if you plan on writing any government proposals, or managing government contracts. Just be prepared to filter through a lot of bad editing, spelling errors, sentences that make no sense, incorrect wording that render the sentence incorrect, and, at certain times, words that do not exist. For example, the word "definitized" appears many times; and I don't think the government has ever "estopped" invoking ceiling price limitations.It just seems unbelievable that a book in its fourth edition could be so riddled with obvious errors - especially in this day and age when spell checks and grammar checks are built in to even the most basic of writing and publishing tools.All in all, you'll obtain some new knowledge, just be prepared to spend some time reading, and re-reading certain sentences and paragraphs to make sense out of them.
