Renouncing Violence: Practice from the Monastic Tradition

Review

"In the book Renouncing Violence, Sr. Mary Margaret Funk takes a uniquely monastic view of violence and its end. There are no charts or graphs on violence, but rather windows into her monastic practice, wisdom, and faith. I enjoyed and learned the most from her personal stories and self-reflection, going deep into her own anger, searching for a solution and ultimately finding it. Her understanding of thoughts and where they came from, helped along by her many years of work with Buddhists was particularly interesting and useful. The phrase, `World peace begins with inner peace' seems to be the heart and soul of this book."Ven. Kusala Bhikshu"This is a necessary book at a time when, as Meg Funk puts it, we are `in a global bad mood,' and angry voices and violent actions grab the headlines. She makes a convincing argument that the Christian tradition—in Scripture, in the life and death of Jesus, in the coming of the Holy Spirit, and in the practice of prayer—offers a way out of retaliation and violence. As challenging as this book is, it is also reassuring: if the renunciation of violence is our response to the magnitude of God's love for us, Funk asserts that it is the Spirit who gives us the capacity to find our way to reconciliation and peace."Kathleen Norris, Author of Dakota: A Spiritual Geography and The Cloister Walk"In the current time, violence is pervasive and pronounced. Violence grips our collective and individual spirits. In her book, Renouncing Violence, Sr. Meg Funk skillfully invites us to return to the deep-seated roots of the monastic tradition in an effort to renounce that which has taken hold of us during this tenuous and volatile time. By renouncing violence in all forms, we rediscover who we are and return to that which we are called to be—people of love and compassion, becoming healers for that which violence has destroyed. As Sr. Meg emphatically states throughout her book, in renouncing violence we shift from harm to healing. Renouncing Violence is needed now more than ever. The book invites us all to practice training our minds and hearts from self-consciousness to God-consciousness for a world in desperate need of peace, reconciliation, and freedom from the forces of evil."Mary M. Heintzkill, MTS, BCC, Director of Spiritual Care and Mission Integration, Ascension"In the face of almost overwhelming anger and violence active in our culture and world-at-large, we ask, `How can we bring about healing and reconciliation?' Sr. Mary Margaret Funk offers a means: inner work. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can train our minds to uproot angry thoughts and actions that fuel violence in our world. Renouncing Violence is a timely, important, and practical guide to the necessary inner work to become vessels of healing in our world."Fr. Daniel Chowning, OCD"Once again Sister Meg has taken the ancient desert spirituality and made it meaningful for twenty-first century city dwellers. She has a wonderful way of being faithful to her Roman Catholic tradition while stretching us to experience God's all-encompassing compassionate love. Meg turns the tables on some age-old interpretations of Jesus' behavior in the temple; the wrathful God who demands atonement for our sins and the Church as God's instrument for punishment."She is an excellent teacher. As a Benedictine living in Mexico and often surrounded by violence, I might have preferred a `quick fix' to my situation; but then anyone who knows Meg Funk would never go to her for easy, `out-there' solutions to their problems. A word of advice: don't miss the appendices."Patricia Henry, OSB, Monasterio Pan de Vida, Torreon, Mexico

Few remain among us who know, practice, and can transmit the deepest, most profound spiritual practices of the Christian tradition with grace and true understanding. Sr. Meg Funk is one of these, a true catechist, formed by a lifetime committed to Benedictine monasticism. Her perspectives on renouncing violence as a personal spiritual practice have been broadened out by lengthy engagement and diaglogue with other spiritual traditions devoted to peace as a transformational practice. Recognizing in her own experience of anger how thoughts and feelings escalate into violence, this master teacher brings forward in accessible ways the wisdom of elders and saints of the faith which enable us through grace to transform anger into calm and potential violence into humility and love. Those who recognize their own as well as our world’s great need for such teachings and welcome guidance on how to put them into practice will find much to drawn upon here. Sr. Meg’s enlightening chapter on peaceful uses of holy water in daily practice is a beautiful example. The bibliography alone is a compact summary of the wisdom embedded in the Christian spiritual tradition.

This review is for the A.E. Stallings translation published March of 2018. Amazon, bizarrely, has all the ratings for previous editions on this page too. I read the kindle edition and found it great for jumping back and forth to notes (which, btw, are fun and informative; not stodgy or academic). The translation reads so smoothly in English one might think it an English original, something some translators think is wrong but is very much right. And the preface was fascinating for someone who's not at all a classicist to read. The only drawback is Hesiod's work. I would not be surprised if his brother (to whom this lecture on all things correct is addressed) stopped speaking to his brother for good.

The exposure I got to Hesiod in college was both too much and too little at the same time. There was a lot that I encountered in translation, but so little of it was absorbed. Old translations really made Hesiod an archaic poet. Stalling makes Hesiod a singer and lets some personality out of these old texts.I also highly recommend readers dig into the introduction and notes—where Stallings also lets her own personality and judgments and scholarship slip in. Being able to place Hesiod in a historical context helped me make sense of these poems.

An average translation of Hesiod, with the 'economics' commentary not terribly deep.

I purchased Works and Days but found even in the introduction, so many typographical and setting errors that I have to wonder if the quality of the translation or the setting of the poetry itself is correct. Poetry requires exactness. There are sentences cut off, misspelled words, sentences started without capital letters, sentences broken up in mid stream to become two sentences, and odd breaks, and all of this just in the introduction! I suspect many of these issues were not the result of the writer, but the result of the format/editing of the book for this new medium. The administrative processing of this project, seems at best, rushed. Such a poorly executed product indicates no final read through or editing eyes surveyed Works and Days to verify that the e-book matched the actual book. I feel badly for David Grene.

Good read for anyone

Great! One of the foundational works of Ancient Greece, alongside Homer's Iliad. Well worth it for modern readers. Hesiod rocks!!

nice addition to my collection. translation comments are great , especially for the new or non student. really good value

I'm a non-Ancient Greek reader who was looking for a good thorough commentary on Hesiod's "Works and Days". I tried a couple of different versions and this Tandy-Neale text was the best one that I came across. It features an excellent introductory essay and super detailed explanatory notes that run opposite the translated text. Don't let the technical sounding subtitle, "A Translation and Commentary for the Social Sciences", scare you off, the layman who is interested in the poem from primarily a literary perspective has a lot to gain from this book. Definitely recommended.
