Michiko Kakutani, in her book, The Death of Truth, present a realistic view of today's society and its dubious relationship to "true-truth." She shows how we are living in a postmodern era in which there is no such thing as public-objective truth—it is all relative—alternative facts. More specifically, Kakutani shows how relative truth has permeated the culture of our politics as embodied in our 45th President, Donald J. Trump. Why he, and many others, do not anchor reality in the objective truth is clearly brought out in her book. She describes that with alternative facts comes alternative realities. With this, Kakutani give the reader a clear explanation as to why, in particular, Trump and those close to him speak and behave the way they do. Since relative truth is so pervasive, she leave the reader with little hope for a quick change in the public's view of truth.

As political discourse in the United States becomes increasingly subsumed by ideology and divorced from both soundness and consensus, Michiko Kakutani provides an analysis of how we got here and provides tentative suggestions on a way out. This is not an optimistic book, but these are not times that give much cause for optimism.

The Death of Truth is a powerful, defiantly written defense of the modern liberal worldview. It is written in opposition to what Kakutani perceives as the malevolent outlook spread by the current administration, particularly its leader.The world Kakutani argues for has deep roots. Going back to the founders, she sees the pillars of democratic society as trust in reason, dialogue with opponents and a sense of national purpose which overrides more parochial considerations.She then sees Trump as promoting a society distrustful of science—the archetype of objective truth—as well as distrustful of the mainstream media and traditional democratic institutions. In its place is a watered-down version of postmodernism: there are only competing narratives and alternative truths. Experts, scientific or not, all have a hidden agenda. There is no way to communicate with opponents—only struggles for power.Kakutani builds this contrast by, ironically enough, constructing her own narrative. Most of the reasons for the debacle she sees in Trump have been expressed by others: news feeds which provide only one perspective, deliberate disinformation campaigns sponsored by Russia and gerrymandering of congressional districts leading to more partisanship.But, I emphasize, while well-sourced, it’s interesting that Kakutani doesn’t support her case with much data. The book is instead a mesh of cultural history, literary theory and philosophy. The narrative will then tend to either resonate or fail to resonate with readers. It cannot be tested like a scientific hypothesis.In addition, Kakutani tends to see all disavowal of truth as stemming from Trump and the Republicans. Didn’t one of Obama’s closest advisors say that Obamacare was sold based on the stupidity of the American people?Even so, to so tersely compose a thesis of such obvious importance is quite an accomplishment. I only wish that Kakutani’s vision of a civilized debate between the right and left within America at large would apply to her own book. This is a fast read, and a highly engaging and fascinating look at what's happening in our world, with apt historical comparisons. Everything is well researched, and backed up by credible sources. Everyone should read this.

I didn't catch the subtitle on first glance, so as I started reading I was surprised to discover that that the underlying theme read like a screed against Trump's tweets. However, after finishing the book and accounting for that (even putting that aside), the author makes some excellent and relevant points that are able to stand on their own, even without the torrent of alt-facts issuing forth unchecked from the Trump administration.

Sara J. Kadolph is a retired professor emeritus of Apparel, Merchandising, and Design at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she taught for 30 years. Dr. Kadolph is the recipient of numerous teaching, advising, and professional awards including teaching excellence awards from the International Textiles and Apparel Association, Iowa State University, and the Iowa Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She was the inaugural holder of the Donna R. Danielson Professorship in Textiles and Clothing. She is a Fellow of the International Textiles and Apparel Association and a Wakonse Fellow.   Dr. Kadolph has consulted with companies in the textile complex to solve quality problems, educate product development/design teams, select materials, assess textile performance, write specifications, and develop quality assurance programs. Her teaching and research scholarship has been published in the Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, the Journal of the Society of International Natural Dyeing, the Journal of the Korean Society for Clothing Industry, The Journal of Consumer Education, the Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, the International Journal of Clothing and Science Technology, and others. Her Textiles book with Pearson Education is used in colleges and universities throughout the world.     Sara B. This is a very useful guide to understand how this amazingly complicated but versatile camera works. The instructions that come with the camera leave too much unexplained. I recommended going through the camera's menu and physically operate the camera as you read through the text. I read the manual on a 14-hour flight to Manila and in my hotel room the night before trying to use it in an underwater housing. The book saved me when the underwater housing record button froze at 90 ft while recording underwater. I was able to re-program a different button on the camera while in the housing and turn off the recorder. I learned how to do this from this book. I continue to study the book and try stuff. Especially useful for me was the explanation of all the different video formats and focus options and managing the camera to get the best results. I also recommend watching youtube how to videos by professionals and talking to other advanced or professional photographers to complement the book. I also purchased his A-6300 book. I also loaned that book to a friend on a two-week trip and she produced some great video and stills. It's worth it!

David has more technical knowledge of any camera guide author that I have ever read. This isn't necessarily beneficial to the reader. The problem here is that depth of author knowledge does not directly translate into reader understanding. At least not for me.While his knowledge is unquestionably impressive, I found his writing style too wordy. He often writes seven words where four would suffice, resulting in three sentences instead of one succinct one. I often found myself thinking: "Please get to the point!"... if I was able to stay awake that long.My opinion: this book needs drastic editing. I don't really need to understand the physics of photons to operate my a6500, in the same way that I don't need to understand the physics of engine combustion to drive my car.David thinks and writes like an engineer. If that's the level at which you want to understand how to operate your camera, this book is for you. Otherwise, there may be easier to understand alternatives.

The skimpy "manual" provided with the SONY A6500 is nearly useless, and of little help with this superb and complicated camera. SONY does provide a 412 page PDF manual that can be downloaded from their Support page at www.sony.com. This longer manual is very helpful, but it is not very convenient to use when trying to master this technologically complex piece of machinery. David Busch has written an excellent, informative and well illustrated manual. Both beginning photographers and those with long experience will find it very helpful. In attempting to appeal to a broad audience, some critics have complained about the "simplicity" and repetitiveness. As a lifelong photographer (who recognizes the importance of reading manuals), I thought he struck a reasonable balance. It is about 398 pages, printed on highly quality paper. It is not intended to be read in a single sitting. Best to read small sections at a time, with camera in hand. Busch is a skilled technical writer able to write clearly and, with orderly presentation, eases the reader into the technical elegance and complexities of this camera.Easily worth the price of the book, considering the investment in the camera, lens, tripods, etc. Lots of helpful tips. Just don't try to swallow the whole book in a single sitting.

Excellent book. I had previously purchased David's a6000 book, so I knew what to expect. There is almost no feature about the a6500 left out. Beyond explaining the functions, he goes into the why and how to use it. A large and complete manual for a vary complex camera. Easy to read and will remain a reference to go to as you forget things. Index and table of contents is excellent.

The A6500 is an amazing camera, but it initially appears quite overwhelming. The menus and sub-menusare not always logically arranged, and the explanations in the short manual are never sufficient to figure out exactly what anything means. You can do it by trial and error, but why bother. The book is a great place to start learning about your camera.

I almost didn't get it because I thought that it was expensive. But I am glad that I did. It made learning about how my camera works a more pleasant experience. It has more than I was looking for in it.

Excellent book. Very detailed about the camera and a lot of info on things like lenses. The book goes way beyond the manual with recommended settings based on experience. The diagrams and photos are excellent. I have two other books in his series and they are equally good. There are also lots of photography tips that apply to all cameras. I highly recommend the book.

I can't imagine trying to learn to use the camera without this book. I'm into details and thoroughness when trying to master something new, and this book is all that! I like that the author tells you which settings he prefers. I think it's so valuable that I'm considering getting the Kindle version, too, just so I can take it traveling.

I had high hopes for this book given the reviews here. I bought this book brush up on my existing knowledge and learn new things and was very excited to receive it. There are some interesting points and I liked that it has a section on heuristics. It introduced me to the idea of simulated annealing, which I am using for a problem at work now actually, but like most things in the book I had to turn to the internet for a better explanation. The book is a bit wordy and hard to read at times.The other major gripe I had is with the code examples. Most variables and method parameters are named a, k, c .. etc. For instance here is a method header in the backtracking section: construct_candidates(int a[], int k, int n, int c[], int *ncandidates)This makes the code very hard to read and follow as well when you are a lines deep in a method trying to figure out whatk[i] - c + a is. It has been my experience that most math/engineer types and professors tend to write code this way vs giving things descriptive names so the code is easily understandable. The book would be 10X more valuable had the code samples been clearer. I ended up sending it back.

Buyer beware! Amazon appears to be selling counterfeit textbooks. I have notified Amazon of this problem and re-purchased and still received what I believe to be counterfeits due to the very poor quality of the color, binding, printing, and horrible misspellings on the back of the book in particular.The contents of the book is great BTW. However I'd recommend buying direct from publisher.

If you've been sentenced with the CLRS book (Introduction to Algorithms), buy this book in addition!! CLRS has very firm technical descriptions, but The Algorithm Design Manual is simply much more enjoyable and provides a lot of the motivation for using some of the algorithms described in CLRS. The book is simply a delight to read.ALSO: perhaps most importantly, if you are a recent graduate of a computer science program and you are trying to get a job in the field, this is the FIRST book I would recommend to review algorithms and data structures. DO NOT EVEN BOTHER to pick up CLRS (unless specifically directed to do otherwise), as more than likely the questions you will get during the interview will be some variation of the problems that you will encounter in here. I had at least one interview in which all of the problems were derivatives of those mentioned in here; unfortunately I had not yet found this book and so I was rather poorly prepared. When I first picked this up a few months later, I immediately recognized it's value and the fact that this was the only resource I had needed all along.

Not sure why this is listed as "abridged" but the number of pages matches the other listing for the item. It took a fair amount of searching on the ISBN to find someone who disclosed the number of pages.Personally, I really like Mr. Skiena's writing style and his presentation is clear. It's not as dry as Sedgwick. This has now become my favorite book on algorithms.

This book seems to be a very loose touch on algorithms. The author stated his algorithm for solving the pyramidal number problem from pp 52 - 54, but where can we find and try out his program mentioned that it got 30,000 times faster, etc.? For the matrix multiplication problem stated on p 403, it just refers to other people's work without giving anything concrete.If you are looking for algorithms with real, working implementations, it might be worthwhile to check out "Algorithms with Implementation in C: a Quantitative Approach."

Steven covers a lot of topics and as often as not - not deep enough. I would have prefer fewer topics and examples, but more depth. Also, all his example code is in C++. I would have much preferred a pseudo code to any specific programming language.As others have noted, the spine is very weak, and fell apart rather easily. You can tell the author really tried to make the material approachable, but it's nowhere near as beginner friendly as the amazing book "Grokking Algorithms", that one is a true beginners book. This is a decent second one.

Ordered the hardcover version and glad I did; this is worth having around as a quick reference and as an introduction to problems you may not know the nuances of yet. It's also a good jumping-off point to get you thinking about the nuances of an algorithm or set of algorithms and give you references for further reading.I took off one star because of the hardcover's print quality. The print looks like it was printed on a laser printer set to economy quality while it was running out of toner--it doesn't prevent you from using the book but does make it harder to read and less presentable, and means it's just not quite up to the quality you expect from a decently printed book.

This book is very fantastic. Also, it comes with two CDs, but because of the weird white cushion kind of packaging, it seems like there's only one CD. This caused me frustration, because you can't run the examples in the book without the second CD. It wasn't until I held the book again and wondered why there felt like a hard object was inside that I tried to examine it. Turns out, the second CD was under the white cushion! You just have to peel it away and you'll see the CD. But I don't blame you if you thought it was missing too. It's packaged very weirdly, and very hard to notice.Nevertheless, the book is not only an excellent Assembly Language resource, but it's also packed with a Linux tutorial that will help you learn the command line.

It came without DVDs which were missing book is potentially of little value because instructions and examples are for out of date versions of software which would be useable if DVD had been include which contained software. It was my fault because small print said DVDs were missing so confirm DVDs are in book before you buy.

I just got this book in the mail so have no had a chance to go through the entire thing, but looking at the contents, I can tell at least a few chapters are wasted on topics such as:Installing Linux: pgs 79 - 114Using Linux: pgs 115 - 149I can forgive a dozen pages devoted to getting, installing and using NASM since that info might be needed by a real novice. IMO, if you are looking to do assembly-level programming on Linux, and you don't know anything about Linux and don't even have it installed.... better learn something easier first.... there are entire volumes dedicated to using Linux... no need to waste space in an ASM level programming book.Otherwise, this book looks very good. Much better than "Linux Assembly Language Programming". Don't get that book; I own both and this book has proven more useful in 2 days than the other one in 2 years.

This book begin with a good introduction of what assembly language is and who can be implemented, give you step by step all information you need to learn and use this language, if you use Linux on intel X86 based machines and you are interested in learn assembly, this book will be very helpful.

Every time I’m loving a book in this series I get to the end and I’m just like, oh.Am I the only one that wanted this series to take on a more sinister plot? There are so many times that it’s hinted it will go that way but then it never does. Leigh Bardugo has created such an interesting, complex villain but then someone like Mal takes up 50% of the book. Mal, who is an average, ordinary, underwhelming character that I’ve seen in 100 other books. I don’t get why there’s such an emphasis on him, especially when his character is not evolving, developing, or growing at allIn Shadow and Bone I didn’t like the ending because I don’t care about Mal and his addition towards the end of the book was underwhelming. And now in Siege and Storm I didn’t like the ending either! Literally nothing happened. And I’m not talking about the first 300ish pages – those were great. I’m talking about the ending. The ending could have been so much more had it just gone a different way. But now, the entire lead up to the ending was…pretty much for nothing?Based on the ending of these last two books, I almost 90% sure how Ruin and Rising is going to end, which sucks. I want some surprises, some twists. I’m really hoping that Leigh Bardugo will surprise me with the next bookI loved everything else about this book. It started off strong and action-packed with a visit from the Darkling and his new and improved power. And then we meet some new characters: Nikolai, Tamar, and Tolya. Nikolai is…a fantastic character. He is the complete opposite of the Darkling, yet somehow I love them both so much.And despite a lot of people saying the middle of this book was slow and boring, I really liked it! I didn’t find it slow at all. There was a lot of planning and waiting, but I didn’t find those parts drawn out and still enjoyed them. I loved getting to know Nikolai and I was so happy that Alina grew more powerful and authoritative. Her banter with Nikolai is honestly my favorite.Overall, there’s nothing inherently wrong with this book, per say. It’s mostly just my preferences for how I want the plot to go that made me dock 1 star. But I will say that in terms of character development, Mal is lacking.

** spoiler alert ** Seige and Storm pick off a few months after book 1, with Alina and Mal still on the run. We were thrown into the actions almost immediately, and I definitely appreciated how Bardugo did not hold back to get us back onto the game.Although the ultimate goal should be destroying the shadow void, it's this book that started to make me realize that the amplifiers are going to play a much bigger role than I originally anticipated.The growth Alina is starting to show is profound, and I am proud of how much she is adapting to her surroundings. Alina is still Alina, just the more updated version. Through her narratives, we see mental notes she give herself to act a certain way in order to manipulate or prevent being manipulated. She's still very obviously an amateur, but she's learning.Because I'm pretty well-spoiled with the series, I was quite aware of Nikolai's introduction (and how he's not going to end up with Alina). It's also because I posses such knowledge in my mind that made it so much obvious for me to see how organized Bardugo was in organizing her series' story-line. The way she portrayed Nikolai and the Darkling made it obvious from the very beginning that as much as we may ship them, they will never work. None of it was improved, they were all planned.At this point, it's very obvious that the Darkling is not redeemable. I know when they are because the authors would've made specific scenes to prove to us that they are redeemable, and able to become a couple with the protagonist. I am very sad to say that looking at the story's progression, it is obvious that Bardugo purposely made us have feelings for him, but fundamentally never intended to make him anything other than a villain. We are in love with the idea of the Darkling, not him for who he is. Becuase there really is no other way to defend him: he is evil.But it all comes down to how the story is progressing, and how this book carries along with the plot. I'm surprised to say that this was actually executed very, very well. It's always hard to execute the ability to transfer one story-line from one setting to another. It's like having to transfer one very easily disturbed object from one person to another on a very shaky train. It's eminently very difficult to make sure the story progresses steadily and at the same not different, but still not feeling out of place with the series.This trilogy also joins the club of books that proves how books do not need cliffhangers; if your books are good, the readers would be bound without a choice.

Wow okay, where do I start? Siege and Storm is a fantastic sequel, filled with amazing characters old and new and really great action.This book takes off where the first one left off, Mal and Alina in hiding from the Darkling and his forces until of course, things go south. It seems the Darkling has gotten a new power and is as dangerous as ever. Meeting a few new characters, (one who happens to be an awesome pirate- or shall I say privateer), Alina goes back to Ravka to try to save the kingdom from the Darkling's power.The very very good: Nikolai. He was absolutely my favorite thing in this book. He's tough, complex, charming, hilarious, and he also seems to have Ravka's best interests at heart. I would literally read 10 books of just his adventures on the high-seas.The still very good: Alina. She's strong and becoming something extraordinary but she knows she can't just run and hide from it all. She is afraid of the Darkling because of their similarities and she's afraid of the powerlust, and rightfully so.The still quite good: The Darkling was as awesome and terrifying as ever. The only problem was, he wasn't in this book that long. Another quote I enjoyed because some sick and twisted part of me still low-key ships the Darkling and Alina:The oh-god-I-hate-you-just-shut-up-please: Mal. He was pretty awful 85% of the time. He was just really whiny and angsty and I just felt sorry for Alina for being in love with his whiny ass and having to deal with him.I was almost going to give a rating of four stars, just because the book started to drag in the middle as they spent a lot of the time just hanging out waiting to be attacked but the ending changed my mind. It was awesome.
