I love Bernie Clark's yin yoga book but this is not that! I'm not sure what I was expecting when I bought this book but its just too technical for me. I was hoping for a book similar to previous yin books but this is an anatomy textbook. I wanted a book informed by yin yoga that would help me as a teacher (i.e., sequencing, keeping students safe, postural cues, and benefits). This book might be a good book for doctors, but its not helpful for me as a yoga teacher. This book has too much detail for me (and I say that as not only a yoga teacher, but a full time scientist who has studied anatomy in college). I'm bummed out that I have to pay $6 for a return label..

I love all the books written by Bernie Clark, especially this trilogy series. His writings and data are all scientifically well backed up (tons of reference pages) and well organized. I followed "How to read this book" and read what I need for my practices and teaching instead of cover to cover (it's great amount of information and could be intimidating!). Lots of good technique that we can offer in the class and my favorite is "Nerve Flossing!" I cannot wait for the next book from Bernie!

In depth information with good pictures to support the descriptions. I especially like the sections marked as "note to teachers". The language is clear to anyone even with no medical background. This is second book in the series. I have the first one - Your Body Your Yoga, and it's just as great.

Comprehensive and well written. I love it!

I've had two healthy children in previous years with no complications. This year I've been pregnant twice. The first time the AFP test showed possible spina bifida and at 18w we found that our baby had stopped having a heartbeat finally and had actually stopped growing at 12w. A few months later we got pregnant again. The doctors said the first was a fluke and with the exception of an extra ultrasound seemed unconcerned. THis baby died right at 12w. I bought this book right away knowing I want to try again, but will need to be armed with more information and wanted more guidance going into a third try.This book is a great read for anyone concerned about trying again. It lists the information out in very easy to understand terms. I really liked that it went from beginning to end from possible causes of miscarriage and stillbirth, to actively trying, and talks about the physical and emotional aspects of that journey to expect and even lays out how they might different from couple to couple. You read this book and don't feel crazy. You read this book and get back some of the confidence you may have lost in the medical community through the losses you've endured.I would recommend this book to anyone contemplating trying again after a loss. Lots of great resources listed in the back as well.

I wish i could give this book 6 stars. I have gone through two miscarriages. It is informative, compassionate, and covers all the the thoughts and emotions I am currently going through. We have decided to try again through the guidance of the book. There is a section on how to process your emotions when you get pregnant again. I hope to need that section on the near future.

Another of the "big three" of books that helped me get through the loss of my pregnancy/child a couple years ago (the other two being "Empty Cradle, Broken Heart" and "Trying After a Loss"). Because there is nothing that compares to this sort of loss, it is imperative to really deal with the issues and try to move through it. This book will definitely help.

Our four-yr-old daughter loves her unicorn headphones. They stay on her ears / head much better than other headphones we tried, especially in the carseat and stroller. I am one of the parents interviewed for this book.It's so true that when you lose a baby so many well-meaning people urge you to try again - as if being pregnant again will make everything better. I too thought everthing would be better but in my case my efforts to try again resulted in two more losses. I too thought that everything would be better if I could just hold onto another pregnancy. When I became pregnant fear and anxiety were my constant companions. Reading Ann's book has given me a sense of normalcy. I certainly am not the only one out there whose pregnancy was 38 weeks of near panic. This is a book that acknowledges those feelings and gives you ideas for how to cope.The one area that I wish Ann had discussed was when you decide to stop "trying again". I had three losses before we had our precious 3 year old. We tried to get pregnant a fifth time and after a year finally decided to stop trying. That decision created another loss for us. Somehow our grief was deeper as we re-grieved all our losses and then grieved for the children we would not have.This is a good book. I have given copies to friends that are trying again.

I have read a tons of books since I delivered stillborn 6 weeks ago. Most of the books I'm giving to my doctor to have as resources on hand for others that go through the same struggle, but this is one that I'm keeping. It is full of great information and I want to keep it until I deliver a healthy baby. I have already recommended this book to others I know that will find it helpful.

In general, I dislike reality shows. Only one I can tolerate is The Voice. My hugest quibble is that it cannot be an authentic reality show if you know you're being filmed. You simply can't help but put on an act. Having said that, I was, conversely, keen on the premise of this book. In "Skin of Your Teeth Survival," contestants - some of whom are self-described preppers - are transported to harsh environments and the camera crew films their efforts to survive. Pretty basic stuff, right? But what if, during the filming, an EMP detonates and takes out the national power grid? And the reality show becomes horrifyingly real?I (mostly) ate up this book. I think I found a new writer to follow in Grace Hamilton. And I'm low-key stoked that Surviving the Swamp is only book one in a series. Going in, I assumed the narrative point-of-views would alternate between Wolf and Regan, but no. It's all from Regan Goodfellow's perspective. She's a 27-year-old freelance IT specialist and bearer of a colossal chip on her shoulder. She's had one of those crummy upbringings that only a guy like Charles Dickens can salivate over. Regan grew up a loner, angry, self-reliant, and very guarded against those who try to get close to her. She doesn't trust people.But I like the people she falls in with in the swamp. It's not until, second week into the show, the camera crew fails to show up at the rendezvous point that the contestants finally get an inkling that something's screwy. It's up to the show's creator and host, Wolf Henderson, to guide the group out of the swamp, or those that decided to stay, anyway. (Some chose to strike out on their own.)Maybe it would've made for even more heightened drama if those that decided to stay were the weaker contestants. Honestly, if I were stuck in an inhospitable place, I can do worse than get stuck with this bunch. I also enjoyed the distinct personality tics. My favorite character is actually Tabitha, the paramedic with the sunny disposition. She and Regan are polar opposites in attitude. They become friends, anyway. There's Tabitha's big, loud mechanic hubby, Geno. And the lumbering, know-it-all science guy, Fred. And Wolf himself, who is a prepper and a survivalist and, if I remember it, an ex-serviceman. That's a solid squad with diverse skills.And what does Regan bring to the table? Well, she's feisty. And proclaims to be street-smart. But she's in a swamp.This may be the first post-apocalyptic, EMP grid-down story I'd read where the setting is in a swamp. It makes for an interesting read as there's plenty of knowledge dropped about how to survive while in a swamp, like what flora are edible or medicinal, fishing techniques, the importance of dry socks and of building a platform off the wet ground for when you rest up, etc.Yes, this is one of those survival stories in which a character is trying to get to their prepper compound. We get snippets from the characters in that compound, courtesy of a teenaged girl's personal journal. Hopefully, we get more of Lily in subsequent volumes.This was an excellent read, more informative and character-driven than action-packed. For the action-heads, there's a boss skirmish near the end where Regan proves her worth. But she's my big problem with the book. She's very hard to like. She's so dang mistrustful. She's arrogant and thinks that she can do better on her own. She was all the time challenging every decision Wolf, the survival expert, made, never mind that she's a straight-up novice in a swamp. She complains and argues with everyone and when she makes a poor decision later on, it's hard to sympathize with her plight. Anyway, I realize Regan is probably the most "dramatic" character in the group, so the story has to go thru her. But I wouldn't mind it if later books feature, say, Tabitha or the teenaged Lily as the point-of-view character. I'd like a deeper dive into what they think of Regan. Anyway, 4 out of 5 stars for Surviving the Swamp. Good read about a group of survivors who learn about the apocalypse a few weeks late and the repercussions to that.

I liked the premise of a survival show turning into a reality. One of the main characters, Regan kind of went over the top with her constant withdrawal from the group. I'm hoping she'll come around a little better than she has so far. I really like Wolf because he leads without pushing but has a quiet strength.

Another good book by Grace Hamilton! I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. Could not put this book down once I started reading it.

I received a free copy of this book from Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review.Surviving the Swamp is a story about a group of people from a reality TV show who get stranded in a swamp after an EMP hits, leaving them with no contact with the outside world, and very few supplies.I’m sorry, but hated Regan. She’s not a strong independent loner, she’s just a smart-mouthed, know-it-all, moron. I found myself hoping she would get less shrew-like and idiotic as the story unfolded, that she would be humbled by the experience…..I’ll let you find out for yourself if she does, I don’t want to spoil it. No one else was all that likeable either. I know they were supposed to be “real” people, but seriously, the stupidity in this group was a little extreme, even for fiction. The interactions and dialogue between the characters felt forced and doesn’t flow well, and the language was pretty cheesy. I did like how the people they encountered acted more like I imagine people would in this situation, ranging from helpful to hostile, and everything in between. Overall, not a horrible read, but the Regan character made it a very difficult read. I never found myself rooting for her, I just wanted her to shut up.

This was an okay read.It does generally work as post-apoc and it’s nice to read one that’s really just about the human factor (i.e. no zombies, pandemics, aliens, etc.) – and I really hope the series stays that way!The book has its grim parts, but our characters are mostly enjoyable to read.Our main character is a little harder to feel for. She’s a mix of prickly (which is okay) and goo-goo eyed over a guy (which kind of isn’t). I really wanted her to just be the tough girl she tries to be and no worry about if he likes her likes her.I’m not entirely certain that I’m up for the next book. All the main character's ‘feels’ were kind of getting in the way of adventure. We’ll see…*ARC Provided via Net Galley

This book is really elementary and should only be for first timer Fidget Spinners. My son laughed at the suggestions in the book, because they are so easy. If you are looking for something fun and new to do, look elsewhere.

For the most part I was thinking that fidget pinners would be nothing but a short-lived fad. Wrong, really wrong because, like the Duncan yo-yo, they’re obviously here to stay. There’s a bit more to the fidget spinner than simple stress relief or entertainment. David King can certainly attest to that because he’s come up with a pile of entertaining tricks and activities that make me want to toss the single Spinner I have and buy a few more. According to him, “there are hundreds, thousands, maybe millions of fidget spinner designs out there.”I had no clue that these toys even had a story behind them and, in fact, have “been around in different forms since 1993.” Pogs I was familiar with, spinners, no. Back to those designs. Among the many discussed in this book there are spinners aplenty: The Tri, the Bi-Win, the Hex, the Quad, the Wheel, the Mini, the Fidget Cube, the Fidget Pad, the Fidget Flip, and the one I got in the Dollar Store. Well, skip that one because it’s not in here. There’s also a page of some ultra-cool fidget spinners in the “Hall of Fame.”This book is packed with some good-to know information I never knew. King starts off by describing how spinners are made and how they work. He explains that they are “actually little machines with a whole lot of physics behind them.” A word to the wise is in one sidebar and that’s the fact that fidget spinners shouldn’t be “distracting to other’s in a classroom.” The fun really begins when learning how to do some amazing tricks ... at home. The literature on firm valuation recommends logical, quantitative methods, which deal with establishing today’s value of future free cash flows. In this respect firm valuation is identical with the calculation of the discounted cash flow, DCF. There are, however, different coexistent versions, which seem to compete against each other. Entity approach and equity approach are thus differentiated. Acronyms are often used, such as APV (adjusted present value) or WACC (weighted average cost of capital), whereby these two concepts are classified under entity approach. Why are there several procedures and not just one? Do they all lead to the same result? If not, where do the economic differences lie? If so, for what purpose are different methods needed? And further: do the known procedures suffice? Or are there situations where none of the concepts developed up to now delivers the correct value of the firm? I'm a grandmother and watching the movie didn't appeal to me because I don’t like violence until two male friends and my son insisted I had to see it. I was completely drawn in, especially when the real relationship between the protagonist and Tyler was revealed. To me, it was more of a psychological story. The musings about consumerism, the downward spiral of the main character, the creation of something that spins out of control, and the followers willing to do anything to be part of something were fascinating. His complicated relationship with the only female character who confounds, irritates and draws him is woven into a brilliant story. So I had to read the book. It’s a little different and the ending is different. But I was as drawn in to the book as the film. I also enjoyed the Afterword, which gave some background to the creation and aftermath of this book. Great writing and a compelling plot.

It was nearly impossible for a movie or television show to upstage the book. With Chuck Paluhniak’s “Fight Club,” it was definitely a close battle.As usual, though, the original product won. Nothing against the movie, which is one of my favorites, but there is no way to inject the rawness of Mr. Paluhniuk’s prose into the entire film.The writing contains the power of this book, a first-person tale of one man’s battle with the futility of a life that is good, just not good enough. The author brings us into the story just as the main character begins his fall into the rabbit hole, dragging the reader along. It is interesting that the main character never uses his name, though as a plot device this reinforces the characterization.For those wondering if the book can pull off an ending that can compete with the movie, I can attest the final chapter is very satisfying and is one more reason to pick up the print version. Five well-deserved stars.

It is true, the book is always better than the movie. Watching this movie in 1999 in New York City Theaters and I remember how much influence on my way of thinking, to challenge the hamster wheel, just as I was starting college.Of course the book is way cooler after you watched the movie, as you have Brad Pitt in your head and the other amazing characters from the movie - honestly I am not sure how much I would have enjoyed the book if I didn’t already have the amazing visual experience from watching the video.Yet by reading the book, you get so much more depth and feeling. Those quick 5 second clips in the movie now are written out in pages and you get the more granular feel of what is happening in Tyler and the character’s head (whose name we never know!).The ending is different in the movie and the book - and I saw that in the review when deciding to invest in reading the book or not - and that alone is worth going through it.What was surprising was how close the book and the movie are! Some of the exact lines are right from the book, and for the most part it is fairly straight along the the same storyline.As Fight Club is one of my favorite movies of all time, I of course will enjoy the book and it gives a new angle and dimension - I should probably watch the movie (yes again) to more fully compare the book and movie.

Let's talk about Fight Club. I was borderline unhealthily obsessed with the movie version of Fight Club when I first saw it at 16. In many ways, the book is better. Fight Club deals with self-loathing, repressed impulses, and the hypocritical and meaning-starved existence many of us in the developed world feel we live in a manner which never fails to be fun, engaging, and artistic. In addition to the message, as I've gotten older and read more novels I've come to appreciate the style in which Fight Club is written more and more.PS if this book ends up resonating with your latent aggressive impulses, try boxing, kickboxing or Jiu Jitsu. (But please don't blow stuff up)

You Throw Like a Girl IT WAS THE FIRST DAY of summer vacation. Mom called it the Summer of Girls. My nine-month-old sister, Ava, called it, “Wah, Wah, WAAAAAH!” And I called it the Summer without Dad. But the truth was, no matter what you called it, this summer was going to stink. How could it not, when I was trapped in a car, eight hours into a journey that was taking me far away from my friends, and a week ago we said good-bye to Dad as he started a year deployment overseas in a place thousands of miles away? Save ME PLZ!!!!! I texted to my best friend, Maddie. Come back PLZ!!!!! she texted back, and I wished I could. We crossed the Indiana border and passed a giant sign that proclaimed Ohio THE HEART OF IT ALL. Mom beeped the horn three times. I sunk down in my seat to avoid the confused looks of the people in the cars next to us. “Please, stop that,” I told her, but my protests didn’t matter. Mom beeped every time we entered a new state. “How else am I going to announce to everyone that we’ve arrived?” she asked. Ava thought it was hilarious, cooing each time Mom laid on the horn. I, on the other hand, wanted to disappear, from embarrassment. Especially when we’d crossed from Illinois into Indiana and Mom’s horn had startled the guy to the right of us. He’d shaken his fist and mouthed some words Ava was definitely not old enough to learn. “Are we there yet?” I asked for what was probably the fiftieth time that day. “Not much longer,” Mom said, which was the reply she gave me every time I checked. I had a feeling that if I had asked her the same question shortly after we’d pulled out of the driveway, she would’ve still said that it wouldn’t take much longer. I opened my mouth and let out a huge yawn. “This drive stinks,” I announced, but no one bothered to answer, so I rested my head against the window and watched the world fly by. We usually took a plane to Grandma’s house, but this year we took the minivan. Mom thought driving would be an adventure that would help us bond. “Picture it,” she’d said when she’d told me the news. I’d been lying on a folding chair in the backyard, soaking in the first day of warm weather and dreaming about the last day of sixth grade. “It’ll be the three of us girls and the open road. We’ll have so much fun!” I’d told Mom I’d give it a chance, but I wasn’t convinced this would be as “fun” as she believed it would be. So far my summer had consisted of nothing but endless fields, with the occasional farmhouse and cows. I was so bored that at one point I tried to count the yellow lines on the road, which didn’t work, because Mom always went over the speed limit and it was all a blur. We drove on, and another half hour ticked by, and then fifteen more minutes. I watched the world slip past outside the car window as we moved further and further away from our house and closer and closer to Grandma’s. Mom pulled off the highway, and we began to take side roads. I was one more winding road away from getting carsick when Mom pointed out the window. “Gabby, look, we’re getting close. There’s LaMarca’s Farm.” One of my favorite sites to spot on the way to Grandma’s house came into view. It was a two-story-tall corn statue that stood at the entrance of the biggest farm in the area. I’d never been so happy to see a giant ear of corn. It meant we’d made it. Buildings and streets began to look familiar, and I felt a tiny flutter of excitement. We’d visited enough times in the summer that it kind of felt like my home away from home. “Coneheads has orange swirl ice cream today!” Mom announced as we passed a small building painted with rainbow colors whose sign had a face with a cone on the top of its head like a hat. It was one of our favorite places to go when we visited Grandma, and who could blame us? Their chocolate chunk mint ice cream was the best I’d ever had. We drove through the tiny downtown with a bunch of stores and restaurants, and passed under a giant banner stretched across the street that advertised the Corn Festival. It had a countdown box announcing that there were sixty-one days until the annual event. Mom and Dad always made sure to time our yearly visit so we could go. It was a weeklong celebration with games, carnival food, rides, concerts, a beauty pageant, and most important, the championship game for the summer league softball and baseball teams. It was such a fun week. Everyone was in a great mood as they celebrated their biggest crop . . . corn! Mom said this year would be even more of a big deal because it was the fiftieth anniversary of the festival, so the town planned to waste no expense to make it as grand as possible. We left the main stretch of town and passed the recreation center, which was full of kids at the pool. But I didn’t care about the pool; it was the baseball field I was interested in. I watched a group of boys around my age playing a game, and I imagined myself on the pitcher’s mound. Mom had promised me I could join the softball team here, and I couldn’t wait to get out on the field and throw the ball around. But my good feelings evaporated quickly as I thought about how Dad wouldn’t be able to watch me play this summer. The car turned down Grandma’s street, and the empty feeling deep in my stomach became worse. Usually when we turned onto her street with the rental car my parents would get at the airport, Dad would drive super-slowly on purpose, which made me crazy, because all I wanted to do was race out of the car and jump into her pool. It was the best part of her house. I’d begged Mom and Dad for years to get a pool like Grandma has, but there was no budging them, so I made sure to get lots of swimming time in when we visited. Today was different, though. Mom didn’t drive slowly. She didn’t remember the joke Dad would play, and for the millionth time that day, I wished he was here. I couldn’t help thinking about him. How could I not? Mom said that I needed to keep my mind busy with other things so I wouldn’t miss him as much, but that wasn’t working at all. For either of us. I’d caught her a few times staring off into space with a sad look in her eyes, and I was pretty sure it was because she was thinking about Dad. “I know this is hard on you; it’s hard on all of us,” she’d say. “But this summer will be good. I need help with Ava, and you’ll be so busy making new friends that you won’t even notice your dad is away.” But she was wrong. I’d never forget that he wasn’t with us. It’d been a week since we’d said good-bye to him, and we hadn’t heard from him yet. Mom said that as soon as he was able to, he’d contact us, but waiting was the worst ever, because I had no idea if he was okay or not. I didn’t say any of this to Mom, though, because I needed to be strong for her so she wouldn’t get upset. Dad had told me to try to do that, and I wanted to make him proud. I wiped my hands on my shorts and gripped the handle of the door. Even if Dad wasn’t here, I couldn’t break tradition. I was ready to get out of this car and jump into the pool. It was a ritual Dad and I had followed for years. We’d wear our bathing suits under our clothes, and before we even brought our bags into the house, the two of us would go for our first swim together. Mom and Grandma would sit on the porch with glasses of lemonade full of ice cubes, while Dad and I raced each other in the pool. We’d swim until our fingers were wrinkled like raisins and Mom told Dad to get out so he could start grilling. Even then, the two of us would eat at the picnic table in our bathing suits, not showering and changing until the sun had dipped deep down behind the trees. Mom beeped the horn one last time as she pulled into the driveway, and I was out the door before she even turned off the car. “I’ll bring my suitcase in later,” I shouted, and ran away before she could protest. I pulled my shirt off over my head and wadded it into a ball. I ran around the side of the house, wiggled out of my shorts, and threw them onto the back deck. I held my hands out and spun around, breathing in the familiar scent of fresh-cut grass and chlorine from the pool. As much as I didn’t want to come here for the whole summer, it felt good to be back, and maybe, just maybe, things wouldn’t be so bad. I thought about what Dad would want me to do, took a few steps backward, and then ran forward and, with a giant cheer, did a cannonball into the pool. Summer had officially begun! When I surfaced, I swam to the other side by myself, pretending Dad was right alongside me.

I am a Girl Scout Leader of 8 year old girls going into 3rd grade. They all have different reading levels and we challenged them to read this wonderful book in a month. It was a little bit difficult for a few but the majority of the girls finished it on time. Some of the comments about the book we received from the girls were "exciting", "funny", "good story" and "I liked it a lot", "I loved it".The author Rachele Alpine is amazing and the girl really loved getting the chance to talk to her and ask questions about her book. This was a unique experience for the girls that they absolutely loved.My daughter loved this book and it had a few words that were challenging for her. She loved the story and enjoyed reading this book because Gabby was able to play baseball and be in a pageant. I think she was able to relate to some of the characters which made the book more enjoyable for her. The book was fun and had my daughter laughing on several pages.

You Throw Like a Girl tackles the pressure young girls feel to fit a certain "type." Gabby has a mom who was a former beauty queen and a dad who was a local baseball legend. Gabby gravitated toward her father's pastime, taking up softball. But when her dad leaves the country and she heads to her grandmother's house for the summer, she finds herself pushed into the pageant world while also pretending to be a boy to get onto the only youth softball team in town. I had so much fun reading this book, but I also think it has a great message for young girls who might not be sure where they fit in the whole tomboy vs. girly-girl scheme of things.

A thought-provoking story for both elementary-aged girls (and even adults alike!). I read this book in preparation for Rachele's visit with our Girl Scout troop (all 17 members of which read the book in preparation for the visit). I found the story enriching, filled with fun humor, and with some twists and turns that any reader will appreciate. Love the message in the story -- the reminder to readers to always be themselves. To stand proud and make no excuse for who they are. Thank you for an inspiring story.

My 8 year old LOVED this book. We bought as part of the Girl Scout badge offer Rachele the author offers and my daughter now wants her other book she has out. Rachele was really sweet to write a letter back to my daughter as well which she enjoyed as much as the book. Great message for young girls!

A great read about a girl with an awesome fastball. The family and friend relationships in this book were very believable, and I enjoyed the book's feminist slant. As a baseball fan, this book was particularly enjoyable to read.

This is the first chapter book I've ever been able to get my 10 year old granddaughter to read. She had such a great feeling of accomplishment having completed it. We did read the book out loud together and I can vouch that it's an excellent read with a moral theme that lead to great discussions. We even purchased another of the author's books and just completed it last night. Our Girl Scout leader recommended this book for our troop to read.

Best book ever! My girls are thoroughly enjoying reading it ... and so am I! We have cried and laughed, this book really hits close to home.

My 8 year old daughter loves this book. She has read it several times. She also took advantage of Rachele Alpine's Girl Scout Patch program. We can't wait for the next book to be published.
