This man was a gifted writer, educated in the US, who knew the Mid East like no one I've read before. His insight and analysis was unmatched, until his death. Get his books and you'll understand what the media leaves out...the real story is altogether different. His insights are timeless...read them and you'll have the key to keen understanding.
I wanted to read a book about Israelis. Not entirely about the wars or diplomatic efforts. Mr. Rubin goes into detail about the history, society, government, economy, etc etc in a very nice way. It takes a relaxed approach to controversies which was a nice change of pace! Recommended!
The strength of this book is its breadth and depth, for being an overview of Israel. This is a useful reference for anyone who has an interest in Israel. I highly recommend it.Bill S.
A thorough, wholly enjoyable and well-documented summary of modern Israel, from the beginning of the zionist movement to the present, covering aspects such as geography, history, social studies, economy, religion, literature, music, cinema, politics, the military, etc. A pleasure to read, and a must for everyone wishing to better understand modern Israel and its key stance on the global chessboard.
I enjoyed this book; it was interesting. But it ought to have been billed more as a survey text than a history, which is what it was sold as on Amazon.
