A fine book with terrific photos of Deco jewelry. I never tire of looking at it.

Not useful for me... way too high end

The first sixty-seven pages of this lavish book are four illustrated essays on deco jewelry but basically from a French perspective (it was originally published by Editions Norma, Paris). One by Arlette Barre: 'Captivating the world', nicely covers the wider aspects of the subject and the connection to the various art 'isms' of the first thirty-five years of the last century and the importance of the 1925 Paris International Exposition.Another essay intriguingly considers jewelry and graphic design (plus typography) but looking through the pages at rings, bracelets, pendants and vanity cases I can see a connection between the flat graphics of posters and deco book covers of the period. Jean Fouquet and Gerard Sandoz work captures this feel perfectly. So much of the jewelry here is a clear contrast to the Art Deco bronze and ivory statues of Chiparus, Descomps or Preiss with their precise detail of dancer's costumes and females faces.After the essays the rest of the book considers eighteen designers and companies who probably produced the world's finest deco jewelry between 1910 and 1937. Each name gets several pages with an essay and photos (mostly color) of their work which are all captioned though oddly without any dimensions for the pieces.'Art Deco jewelry' is an excellent look at this particular creative art but also worth considering is a book with the same title by Sylvie Raulet published as a chunky paperback in 2002 with 792 photos (261 in color).

From the Preface: The life and writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer continue to inspire and provoke, comfort and challenge, nurture and unsettle his readers, now into the twenty-first century. This brief book is offered to introduce you to the wisdom and witness of this remarkable human being. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a university professor with a doctorate in theology, a Lutheran pastor, a participant in the early ecumenical movement, a prolific writer, a central figure in the Protestant church struggle against Nazism. His participation in the plots to assassinate Adolf Hitler led to his arrest, imprisonment, and eventual death by hanging at Flossenburg concentration camp on April 9, 1945, at the age of 39. In this volume I have chosen brief excerpts from Bonhoeffer’s writings—books, articles, letters, poems, lectures, and sermons—that reflect the wide range of his work and the depth of the theological themes that absorbed him. The excerpts, printed on left-hand pages, provide the inspiration for short meditations on each text. In my reflections I have attempted to provide clues to what each brief text is about, its context, and most importantly its enduring witness for Bonhoeffer’s contemporary readers. Eight themes provide the focus for these reflections. The first is Church, a reflection of Bonhoeffer’s strong conviction about the social nature of everything about the Christian faith. The second is World, for this is where the church is located, and Bonhoeffer took Jesus’ prayer for God’s reign to come “on earth as it is in heaven” quite seriously. The third is the theme of Discipleship, following Christ, and the ways in which our faith and action in the world are intertwined. The fourth is Politics, for in Bonhoeffer’s day, as in our own, the most difficult sorts of challenges for our discipleship come when the church tries to live out its faith in a world that is decidedly political. Fifth is the theme of Creation, including meditations on the importance of the ways that we understand ourselves as creatures of God. The sixth is Christ, who has been the hidden center of all that has preceded this section. The seventh is Love, which Bonhoeffer saw to be at the heart of Jesus’ life and words and work. And we conclude with a section on the Future—Bonhoeffer’s, our own, and God’s. I hope you will encounter here matters to think and pray about, to argue with friends and family about, thoughts that will sometimes keep you awake at night and sometimes help you to sleep more peacefully. Perhaps they will help you look at your own faith differently. About the Author

Elliott Merrick was born in Montclair, New Jersey, the son of a New York-commuting executive. After graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy and Yale University, Merrick took a job as a reporter with the Passaic Daily News. In 1928 he became assistant advertising manager for the National Lead Company, his father’s company, but Merrick seemed to have nature in his blood and, in 1929, he left the business world behind and joined the Grenfell Mission in Labrador, Canada, as a summer WOP (Worker without Pay). He loved Labrador and its people and was able to stay in the region by taking a teaching assignment for the Mission in Northwest River. It was there that he met and fell in love with the Mission’s resident nurse, Australian-born Kate (Kay) Austen, whom he married in 1930. They lived for a brief time in a small cabin near the current site of the huge Goose Bay Airport. After a number of adventures in Labrador, the Merricks returned to the United States, living in New Jersey and Vermont during the middle of the depression. Elliott Merrick later taught English at the University of Vermont. He is the author of seven other books, including the best-selling Northern Nurse.

I have spent quite a bit of time in Labrador on canoeing and fishing adventures in pristine country and simply love this book. It remains a huge and fairly untouched wilderness, although the local of the book has changed a lot due to a huge dam on the Churchill River, but Labrador is very large. I venture to say that some of these reviewers have no idea of what they are talking about, and I state this with a bit of contempt I regret to say. I too feel the authors dislike for the business world, despite being a quite successful businessman my own self. Ironic. If you truly love the wilderness, this book may become a semi-bible to you. When last I was there, we were in midst of a enormous Caribou migration which took over 2 entire days to pass by. The author was unlucky that during the time he spent there the caribou population was at an extreme low. The animals have very cyclic population numbers. Recently the numbers have been beyond enormous and are just now beginning to decline again.

This is an excellent book, very well written and as poignant for today's reality as it was when it was written. I love Labrador, having been there many times and having read several classics (The Lure of the Labrador Wild, Great Heart, for two examples) and this book is right there with them. The descriptions of this husband and wife being out in the thick of the Labrador wilderness in winter are really inspiring, and gives you great respect for the harsh but wonderful lives of the Labrador trappers of the early 20th century.

Labrador might be called the land God gave Cain, but it's truly the Great Land. This book captures so much of the spirit of "them days" when the trappers went out to the height of land to trap, traveling up the Grand River before it was dammed and it's name was changed. This is a step back in time, a visit with the storied true life legends of Labrador. Highly recommended.

Great book of a remarkable tale of what times were really like in the 1930's for expeditionaries, trappers, hunters, Indians and local folk. Detail written to make you feel as if you were there. This book is an accounting of a husband and wife who embark on a journey in Labrador with a local trapper. I read this book primarily because it was suggested by an outdoor survival instructor. If you are into the bushcraft/survival community, you will definitely like this book. A good read.

Two inexperienced outsiders, husband and wife, schoolteacher and nurse, spend months with trappers on their yearly trek into the heart of frozen Labrador to gather the pelts that produce the only cash support for their families. Mind you, this is in the 1930s. They build their own canoes, sleds, and cabins as they go. They live on beans, rice, lard, flour, and whatever they can shoot for the pot. The snow and wind are constant and people die of the flu or injuries or starvation. The 2 greenhorns prove themselves and love it and come back for more. Tale is told by the teach in his diary.

Not a riveting book, but a good one to follow, maybe even leans toward being a historical write. Very good description of bush life in Labrador in the earlier 20th century. Interesting. ..

Great Autobiography! Or Jornal! Or Story! A fun adventure read!

This book will transcend you to a time and place that makes you feel at peace with nature. Merrick's writing is like poetry in motion. You will wish you could have been there to experience the times when he is at one with the universe. The people and places he is writing about no longer exist, which is the greatest pity of all.

A fitting sequel to A Girl of Fire and Thorns I don't think it did better then its predecessor but it did on par. I think my biggest thing with this series for me is going to be that I am personally biased when it comes to the plot of the series and how it revolves around GOD. I know it is not fair to the series. I am highly intrigued with the story and everything; I read it very fast and it holds my attention.The Plot in this one was faster pace and the stakes seem to have been raised. However as with the last book I think the third act of these books are heavily rushed. All of a sudden your expecting this big blow out or payoff to happen and nothing ever really comes of it. For example the ending of this book was so rushed that I never felt any real impact from the outcome.Characters are another pro/con for me. Some characters are likeable and fleshed out and other characters are just blah. Elisa to me is the only one who is completely fleshed out. Obviously there is a reason for that, but I want to care more about the other characters. In book 2 we learn a little more about Mara and Hector but still nothing groundbreaking. Ximena is still as mysterious as ever. I want to see more character growth in the last book from other characters besides Elisa.Lastly I want to talk about world building. Now world building is one of my favorite aspects in books. I love the feeling of getting completely immersed in new worlds because it is a total escape from reality. I want a little more from the world. I feel like all we've seen is desert and more desert.I am ready to see how this all wraps up in book 3.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, and of course, I can't help but compare the sequel, The Crown of Embers, to it. It lacks a bit by comparison, and I think the biggest factor was the feeling of repetitiveness in CoE. For the first 50% of the book, Elisa escapes from one assassination attempt to another. I did enjoy the growth she's shown between the two books, and the strong, confident Queen we see in CoE is barely recognizable from the timid, girl in Girl of Fire and Thorns.And I have to mention Hector... Hector, whom I adored in Girl, becomes whiny and manipulative in CoE. I think this personality switch was designed to show the depth of his feelings for Elisa, but it just didn't work for me. I hope to see a return of Hector's self-confidence in the final book of the trilogy.I have not lost my enthusiasm for the series, despite some minor disappoints with this book, and I can't wait to read The Bitter Kingdom.

I started reading The Crown of Embers right after I read The Girl of Fire and Thorns. I usually try to avoid reading books in a series back to back because I can become bored with the story or annoyed by the characters. That so wasn’t the case with The Crown of Embers. I was on a high after reading The Girl of Fire and Thorns and that high continued to roll all the way through The Crown of Embers.I felt like this book was much more action packed than the previous book. We already know the world and we have met most of the players in the first book so there wasn’t huge amount of setting discovery in The Crown of Embers. This allowed Rae to start this book with a punch and deliver a knockout (I have no idea where the boxing metaphor came from but I decided to run with it).The Girl of Fire and Thorns was very much about Elisa and her journey to discover her inner strength. In The Crown of Embers we get to see more of what’s really happening in her world. Elisa now has to deal with the politics of ruling her country, and has to learn how to shoulder the responsibility of being in control of so many lives. She also learns how to overcome heartbreak and start to love again. Which brings me to Hector.Hector might be one of my favorite male leads in a long time. He is so strong and good, and while he doesn’t say a lot, when he does talk it speaks volumes. His loyalty and love for Elisa is so pure and sweet. I love reading their scenes together and getting to experience their interactions. I’m also super excited he lost the mustache….though I fear it might make a reappearance.So needless to say I loved The Crown of Embers just as much as The Girl of Fire and Thorns. You know, I saw this series around but it was never one that people were like “Omg, You have to read this!” And that makes me sad.
