This is one of the most imaginative dystopian-type books I've come across in a long time! In a small town called Perdido Beach, whose only real claim to fame is the nuclear power plant it is home to, everyone is going about their day when suddenly all the adults vanish. At first, you wonder if they were raptured or something. But then things start to get a bit strange--some of the kids develop powers, dangerous rivalries emerge, and there is a hint of some Darker Power at force here.It reminded me a bit of Alexandra Bracken's Darkest Minds books, except without the oppressive grownups.Grant was constantly surprising me with the creative twists he threw into the book. From talking coyotes to flying snakes, to the whacked out powers the kids developed--I never knew what to expect and was constantly delighted with some fresh horror.That being said, I feel like I should have enjoyed reading this book more than I did. Not that I didn't enjoy it at all--I did--but it just wasn't the kind of all consuming page turner that it seems like it should have been. I kept reading a few pages at night before bed and then falling asleep. That shouldn't happen with this type of book--normally with a fast paced dystopian, I can't put it down til I reach the end.I think the problem here is in the character development. None of these characters really felt very fully formed. They each have approximately one key trait: Sam is a leader; Astrid is a genius; Drake is an evil sadist; Little Pete is autistic; Quinn is insecure; Alberto is an entrepreneur, etc. etc. etc. The interpersonal drama just felt kind of forced and half baked. And for me, it doesn't matter how creative a world is or how tense the plot--if I can't really relate to the characters, I'm never going to be fully sucked in.Still gotta give this points for creativity - it's really not like any other book I've come across lately. 3.5 stars.

This series was technically YA. Being 68 doesn't stop me from reading the good YA stuff despite it's penchant for romance. I thought that Gone was an excellent book. As the next book was released, I expected the "mid-series" weakness. Instead, I found that I liked the book even better. And so on through book 5, Fear which is even more adult and more breath-taking than it's predecessors.In principle, I hate that authors can't seem to tell a story in 250 pages anymore and that everything is a trilogy or more. Fear has made me change my mind, now I'm living in Fear that the next book will be the final one and I wqon't be able to find anything as good to read.I'm listing what I consider a few of my favorite books to give you a frame of reference for what I love. The tension, the pacing, the mind boggling imagination. If you liked these, you'll love this series. Let me add that the Gone series should be read in its correct order.Altered Carbon: A Takeshi Kovacs Novel (Takeshi Kovacs Novels)The Hunger GamesUglies (The Uglies)The Blade Itself (The First Law: Book One)So, really 5 stars for every book and for this incredible series. I see the author has a new series starting BZRK and I'll be buying it with confidence.

This book will completely blow your mind. I was lucky enough to stumble across this series last summer and it was beautiful. The character development, the plot -- oh man, it's great. It reminded me of lord of flies + superpowers and the concept is so interesting! The characters are beautiful and the story has so many twists and turns. It's a book you won't be able to put down until it's over, and then you'll be hungering for the next book in the series. You'll never leave the FAYZ -- it's one of those stories that sticks with you forever. It honestly changed my life and I am so happy I picked it up one day. The characters are not defined as 'good' and 'evil,' but rather in shades of grey and they are relatable as ever. You have your bullies, your good guys, your charismatic psychopaths - and then just plain evil. The redemption stories are phenomenal and the whole story is extremely well written. Just read it!PS - order hardcover. The cover is way cuter (and the people!)

The story was fast-paced and exciting. Characters were well thought out and real, though a little predictable. The only thing that bothered me was that frequently the story would change scenes with no page break or any visual clue that the story had changed scenes - that definitely interrupted the flow of my reading as I had to pause to figure it out. Good clean story and will definitely be purchasing the rest of the series!

At the sentence level, each sentence is fun to read. Ditto the paragraphs. Then Grant weaves all the paragraphs together to make engrossing themes, people, plots and counter-plots. Brilliantly done. I kept on and kept on and kept on. That's rarely true for free kindle books.I was sad that the author resolved almost none of the major struggles and conflicts. I guess that's required since he intended to suck us into a sequel and then into its sequel, etc. In a way that's wonderful because I get to look forward to many more hours of reading about these people and this universe. Still, I would have liked it if we had not just left every evil person or power completely unchanged and ready to go on victimizing good people. That is possible. Take Orson Scott Card, for example. Each book actually "ends" in the sense that good wins and evil is vanquished.So. If you relish the idea of finding a *really* good author and having *lots* of reading ahead of you, and you don't mind knowing that nobody is going to win until (I hope) around the seventh book, then this is a great place for you to go. Great book! I am just a soccer mom. I was reading it before I would let my 10 year old daughter read it. Mom approves. Lloyd is a great role model with such perseverance and a strong work ethic. All qualities I am trying to instill in my daughter.

I loved the book!Carli Lloyd has developed into a premier womens soccer player (perhaps the best in the world).Ms Lloyd tells the story of her rise from local recreational soccer to her winning of the 2015 womens Balon d'Or (award as the best womens soccer player in the world).Her journey starts as most, with her loving (although a bit overboard - helicopter as they call it today) parents. Her recognition in high school, club and college soccer, to her being cut from the womens U21 team.She meets her trainer James, and her life changes.James takes Carli and helps her to train, become physically fit, unselfish, and a good teammate - although Carli remains a bit neurotic.Other things happen to Carli however, as her relationship with her parents goes from great to no relationship.Eventually Carli does make it back to the Womens National Team, and goes on to win 2 Olympics, and finally a World Cup.The book talks about the relationships that Carli has with teammates, families, Brian (her seemingly saint like) boyfriend, parents, coaches and friends.While the effort and dedication that Carli Lloyd has to herself and to soccer is inspirational, it was very difficult (as a parent) to see her relationship with her parents dissipate to no contact for years. It always takes two parties to tango -as they say - and in this case, you cant help but feel that Carli is a tad bit selfish. And shame on her parents for allowing themselves to just ignore and avoid their own daughter. I was going to give the book 4 stars for this reason - until I realized that life is not like a movie - bad things do happen to good people, and not all problems can be solvedI found myself cheering for Carli, Cheering for her and her family to get back together (which did not happen in the book), and for my own kids to recognize the dedication to success that they will need, whether they continue to play sports or they choose other careers.

Both the person and the book. I think you need to be a soccer fan to understand all the soccer details that make up much of this book--the training, the strategy, the tourneys, the players, the coaches. But I don't think you need to be an athlete to understand the drive and commitment it takes to achieve and accomplish which Carli describes so simply, yet eloquently. You leave the book feeling you know her and, then, you realize how much you like her.

This was a fine read, but I could have done without a lot of the snark towards other USWNT players. Lloyd comes off as fairly unlikeable, angry at everyone, and a bit immature. You can definitely write an honest book without it being negative, but this book did not do that.

I'm a soccer gal from Jersey all grown up. I played competitively in youth and high school, then co-ed recreational through college and into motherhood (agree with Carli that pickup games and casual scrimmaging are the best places to improve). Now I occasionally coach. Reading this book, I found the writing so-so (refreshingly unshowy though) and the egocentrism of the narrator a bit of a grind, but I'm inspired to go back to coaching with a slightly different style based on challenging girls individually to keep beating their own best records.

Carli's story is a real inspiration for everyone! I hope my daughter will look up to people like her that work hard and don't give up and live life with integrity. My only minor complaint about the book is that the descriptions of all the games start to make it drag a little. Overall, I highly recommend the book.

Great description of her soccer and personal life throughout her career, including most recent World Cup experience. Detailed description of specific moves or plays, impressive. Interesting relationships with coaches and the US soccer administrators. Photos included. Mostly a biography rather than inspirational, but that is just my opinion. Good read.

Very insightful and inspiring. Carli put in the work and effort to get where she is today and while it has not always been easy, she prevailed. She puts it all out there and I didn't think I could respect her anymore than I already did, until I read this book. She is truly badass and real. Highly recommend this book for all.

It is the real deal. The only gripe I have about it is that it isn't 3 hole punched. Not even Staples or Office Max was able to punch it for me. My vision was to store this book, along with my CDCs, in a 3 ring binder so all of my study material was in one location.All in all, still a good purchase for my needs.

The meaning of prayer has never been so clear to me.After reading many books about prayer, this is the only book that the author was able to express the meaning of prayer in such depth. The author brought down the information in a way that it is easily understood. Other authors are either not able to express it in this way or they just want the reader to find the meaning within himself which often results in the reader getting lost in translation. With this book, the author Rabbi Pinson explains prayer in such a way that it leaves nothing to the reader's imagination and allows the reader to build on the concept and meditate afterwards instead of having to figure out what is being explained; therefore I'm giving this book 5 stars.

I purchased and used this book as the source I knew I could turn to give me inspiration and encouragement into how to find prayer more meaningful. It transformed the way that I approached prayer and it would do the same for any reader who seriously wants to take their prayers to a new level

I really love looking at this book. My husband and I, both English teachers, purchased an "Ideal Bookshelf" print for our bedroom, and we had so much fun deciding on the one that is closest to ours (we couldn't spring the $500+ for a custom), I decided to buy the book. I love the aesthetic of the paintings; real but unreal, accurate but simple. We have already spent a lot of time looking through it and I have been inspired to pick of some of the books as well. It is just such a wonderful celebration of books and how they have shaped our lives. We have some pretty book-nerdy friends, too, so we have literally passed it around on a Friday night and talked about whose list we agree and disagree with. So, it seems like I love this book, but the reason I only gave it four stars is because I would have liked to see some contributions of a wider swath of people. It seems like there are a lot of authors, some illustrators and graphic designers, a few chefs, a few fashion-type people, but that's it. I think it would be interesting to compare some shelves of "regular" book lovers, like me.

This is a wonderful concept for a book: an artist and an author visited a wide variety of people and photographed the bookshelf holding their favorite books. Jane Mount rendered the photos in watercolor pictures, while Thessaly LaForce interviewed the book owners about their books. The result is a charming celebration of books and book lovers, with the shelves offering glimpses into the participants' lives through an analysis of their favorite books. Lovely to browse through.
