Sacred Stories 1 The Birth of the Buddha In the glorious kingdom of Kapilavastu, where the walls were encrusted with jewels and the gardens bloomed all year, there lived a wise and honest king named Suddhodana. His wife, Queen Maya, was as beautiful as a perfect lotus blossom, and she was as kind and good as her husband. One spring night, while Queen Maya lay sleeping on her perfumed couch high in the palace, she had a dream. She dreamed that a young white elephant with six tusks came to her from the sky, and with it were thousands of gods, all of them singing sweet songs of praise. When Queen Maya awoke, she felt a great joy that she couldn’t explain. She rose from her bed, dressed in her brightest colors, and walked through the palace gardens to a shady grove of trees. There she sat on a bench and sent for the king to come to her. When the king entered the grove, he took his wife’s hand and asked, “Maya, why did you send for me?” The queen answered, “I have had a strange dream, and I don’t know what it means. I dreamed that a young white elephant with six tusks came to me, and thousands of gods sang my praises. Does this mean good or evil for us? Please call for a dream interpreter and ask him to tell us.” The king sent for the dream interpreter, who listened to the story with rapt attention. He said, “King Suddhodana and Queen Maya, this dream means that you have been supremely favored by the gods. You will have a son who will be rich in wisdom and praised by the world. Oh King, oh Queen, your son will be an enlightened one, a Buddha.” Suddhodana and Maya looked at each other with radiant eyes and felt a deep happiness and peace. The king called his servants. “This is a day to celebrate,” he said. “Take money from the palace treasury and give it to the poor. Give food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty. See that every woman has flowers and perfume. Everywhere, sing songs of gratitude for the honor that has come to us.” Months went by, and one day Queen Maya knew it was time for her child to be born. She went to the king and said, “Today I will wander through the gardens. I want to hear the birds singing, smell the fragrance of the flowers, and feel the soft air.” “But you should rest, my queen. Won’t it tire you to walk those winding garden paths?” “No, the innocent baby to come must be born among the flowers,” Queen Maya answered. The king nodded. He turned to his servants and said, “Go to the gardens and deck the branches with hangings of silver and gold. When you carry the queen in her chair, wear necklaces of pearls and precious stones, and bring your flutes and harps so you can play melodies that will please the gods.” Bells rang as the palace gates opened. Peacocks spread their tail feathers and swans flew overhead while the queen passed by, seated on a chair carried by servants dressed in finery. In the gardens, Queen Maya told the servants to set the chair on the ground. With her maidens she strolled among the flowers, stopping to sniff a perfect rose or watch a butterfly. When she reached a certain tree that was covered with blossoms, she stopped. With a graceful hand she pulled a branch toward her and held it. She stood quite still, feeling energy and power course through her body, and in that moment a perfect child was born. The maidens near her lifted her son in their arms and sang songs of praise. While the queen rested, they washed him in fresh water from the lotus pond and wrapped him in fine cloths. The earth trembled, alive with delight. Buds burst into blossom, fruit ripened, and the sky sang. One of the servants hurried to tell the king. “My lord, your son is born!” The king and his family went to the garden, where the baby lay in a soft bed of flowers. Birds sang in the trees, and harps and flutes played sweet music. “His name is Siddhartha,” said the king, and he and all the people bowed before the new prince. One man raised his arms and said, “Prince Siddhartha will bring happiness to the world. We have been in darkness, but now we have light. This blessed child is the one who sees truth, and we will learn wisdom from him.” The baby, glowing with a golden light, smiled at all who had come to honor him.Did You Know? • Kapilavastu was in present-day Nepal, near the northern border of India. Today it’s a village called Piprahwa, where visitors come to see the ruins of the ancient palaces. • In Buddhism(BOO-dism), elephants are revered as symbols of endurance and strength of mind. A white elephant represents purity, and the six tusks are reminders to overcome all attachments. In Thailand, an Elephant Festival is held every November, paying tribute to the animal with parades, folk dances, sports, and demonstrations of the elephants’ abilities. • The garden where the Buddha was born is named Lumbini, a holy site with old monastery ruins, a sacred Bodhi tree, temples, and a bathing pond. From dawn to dusk every day, Buddhists come here to chant and meditate. • Suddhodana—sood-ho-DAH-nah

Marilyn McFarlane’s collection of short stories from the major world religions is nothing short of charming. She’s collected “sacred wisdom” from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Native American, and Sacred Earth traditions (which includes Wiccan) and reveals it through delightful stories of pilgrimages, odysseys, family struggles, battles against evil, and, inevitably, lessons learned. Used with parental or teacher guidance, the 35 stories are equally appropriate for children. Sacred Stories offers a truly entertaining way to learn about the world's religions, and illustrates the differences and similarities among them. A highly enjoyable read!

This is a really cool, age appropriate, and educational book. Excellent resource for teachers, students, or parents who wish to teach or learn about the subject.

It was a gift, but I know many of these stories. They seem to be enjoying the book.

Great read! Shares other's stories and shows how we are similar more so than different.

It's a little bit of a snooze fest. I still read the whole thing but it was a long read if ya catch my drift.

Very simple to understand and easy to read, seemingly geared especially towards beginners and in a way that is well understood. I'm very pleased with this buy. Not a huge book, but the 170 pages are filled with good information. I got it b/c I'm wanting to teach my young children that there is more to the world we live in than just what is taught for the most part in small town, USA where we live. I want them to be open minded and to accept what others believe to be their truth. This book I think will come in very handy when the time comes to teach them about different religions, for they a little too young at the moment, but I went ahead and purchased it now b/c I too was wanting to learn a little bit more. It doesn't get too into detail to the point of losing the reader in over-description, but describes just enough to get a basic understanding of each belief system. I like the religions the author chose to include in this book; Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Native American, and Sacred Earth. Although the world doesn't end with just these religions, it is good basic overview and the major beliefs.

This book is a wonderful way to introduce children to different belief systems. With tales from all the major religions of the world, while managing to keep them at a child's level and to treat each religion with respect. These are not just randomly selected stories, but were chosen to reflect important aspects of each religions teachings. These tales also help to demonstrate the commonality in each culture. With tales from Buddhism to Sacred Earth, Marilyn has done a wonderful job both in the introductions to explain the most important tenets of each religion and in the selection of the stories reflect these teachings. As a folklorist I would be willing to use this book as part of my curriculum for the children's classes and would as a painless introduction for adults.

This book is a staple in our home and has been since I was a little girl. I remember sitting on my mom's and nana's laps with them reading this book to me and I'm thrilled to be able to pass on these experiences to my kids as well. The stories are thrilling and captivating and the illustrations are beautiful. This book means a lot to my family and our family time.

Rick & Lanie's Excellent Kitchen Adventures: Chef-Dad, Teenage Daughter, Recipes, and Stories, by Rick Bayless

Amazon.com Review

How, you might ask, can there be any rationale for combining Mexican, Moroccan, French, Thai, and Oklahoma down-home recipes in one cookbook? The answer is family. The Rick Bayless family in this case, he of the PBS cookings, of Chicago's Frontera Grill fame, and author of the enlightening Authentic Mexican, Rick Bayless's Mexican Kitchen, and Mexico One Plate at a Time. Rick and Lanie's Excellent Kitchen Adventures is the combined kitchen and culinary wisdom of a father/chef and daughter/teenager who has grown up in restaurants (much as her dad grew up in a barbecue restaurant in Oklahoma) and has traveled with her parents throughout the world, meeting chefs, exploring markets, tasting exotic treats. Some of those treats were rejected in ways only children can reject foods. Others came home and were folded into the foods a family calls its own and serves again and again. So, the first thing to keep in mind about Rick and Lanie's Excellent Kitchen Adventures is that it is family-tested as well as home kitchen tested. There are two voices in this book: Rick's (a modulated voice of authority) and Lanie's (the teenage voice of reality). And there are five basic sections that reflect the travels and broad culinary interests of the Bayless Family: Mexico, France, Morocco, Thailand, and Oklahoma. You'll find Huevos Rancheros in Mexico and Dutch Babies in France; Chicken Pie in Oklahoma, and Beef or Lamb Kebabs in Morocco. The Red Curry with Duck (Pork or Chicken) brought home from Thailand looks like a winner. These are do-together recipes, as in work together in the kitchen. Bayless sets apart the do-ahead tasks, then presents the recipe instruction in simple blocks. This dance has been well-choreographed. And what's a dance without a little music. You'll find suggestions for playlists while cooking, as well as suggestions for special treats to find while you are shopping in ethnic markets, things you might otherwise overlook. And then there are the stories. You can taste this cooking experience, and you can read about the life experience, through both the father's and the daughter's lens, of traveling and cooking together. It's the together part that makes this cookbook so special and so encouraging. --Schuyler Ingle

From Publishers Weekly

Of the myriad lessons to be found here, the most resounding is this: to be the teenage daughter of an internationally known chef is a very good thing. Proud papa Bayless takes his family to Mexico, the land that launched his culinary success via cookbooks (Mexico: One Plate at a Time, etc.) and a PBS series; to his Oklahoma barbecuing roots; and farther afield, to France, Morocco and Thailand. Both writers prepare each recipe, though rarely together, and commentary from the two highlights the pleasures of cooking from the opposite perspectives of seasoned master and joyful rookie. W.C. Fields disliked performing with children for fear of being upstaged, and Mr. Bayless might be wise to take heed. His travelogues are at best ho-hum next to Lanie's, which brim with brutal honesty. "Morocco is a spectacle of wind-swept deserts," he proclaims, while for Lanie, "It was kind of like everywhere else we visited. Except that you had to wash your hands in front of everyone." Recipes for Kebabs and Paella arise from this trip. In Thailand it's Red Curry with Duck and Street Vendor Pad Thai. Dad and daughter tackle Red Mole with Chicken in Oaxaca, assuring readers that multiple ingredients don't always make for a complex challenge. "I really don't know what the big deal is," says Lanie. Rick Bayless does it up big time in this father/daughter approach to cuisine from back home and around the world.Naturally, I am somewhat biased when it comes to this fellow Okie, he is a familiar face to viewers of his PBS cooking series that appears on our local educational channel Saturdays. I recall his parents' "Hickory House" barbecue restaurant, an Oklahoma City fixture when I was young. What I appreciate about this book, though, is the little explanations and stories going with the recipes. I've been lucky enough to have been many of the places referred to in this book and the tastes and smells bring back many fond memories.Mole the Rick Bayless way is delicious, aromatic and authentic.Buy this book!

We saw Rick on Top Chef Masters and loved his cooking.Found this book at the library and loved it so we decided to buy it.It focuses on so many different cuisines (more than just Mexican) and the variety is amazing. Also, great storyline throughout the book as the family shares their adventures and feedback from making each recipe. It really gives you a personal feeling when reading the book. The recipes are challenging but not impossible. Hardest part for us is finding the ingredients he talks about sometimes. But other than that, great great book!

This is a fun book in which Bayless and his Daughter explore cuisines other than the expected Mexican. I particularly love his Baked Beans recipe.

I love it

And I appreciate he has a good relationship with his daughter and that he passed on his love of Mexico to her. She's fluent in spanish and is well traveled like him. I'm inspired that when I have children I would wish to do the same, have them see the world and appreciate and respect it.edited:As someone who has several of Rick's books, I've developed a shorthand to talk about his work. Now a fellow reader gently reminded me that I actually didn't talk about the book. Well, I did and I didn't. I touched on the family dynamic, which I feel is the true focus of the book. It even states it on the front cover: "Chef-Dad, Teenage Daughter, Recipes and Stories." It's to show that all generations need to learn to cook too. That pretty much sums it up. What's a little different about this book is that it's not simply about Mexican cooking but also comfort food cooking from where Rick hails from. The book gives both their points of view about the recipes included in the book, and comes across like the show Rick has that his daughter's featured on One Plate At a Time. For example, Rick will write a more full introduction and background of a recipe and then his daughter will write about her memories when she first came across the food, or how simple it is to prepare. Her entries are usually not as long as her dad's. I was impressed on her making the mole with another young person. I don't know if they were trying to get the younger hipper crowd to read the book, but maybe Rick should simply have Lanie come out with her own small mini-book about her own favorite recipes and/or places, and what are her recipe favorites to entertain with targetted towards the young single and broke crowd. Chronicle Books tends to make the cutest looking books. Maybe they could publish her book. Just a thought. Now - Please make sure I get a cut of the money you guys make off my idea! *LOL* Color photos throughout. The recipes are pretty straightforward, averaging 5 or 6 ingredients and most ingredients are accessible at your local or ethnic market. There are sections that may be helpful to a first time cook, such as "Four Steps to Growing Three Herbs (On the Windowsill)". Basil, chive and thyme in this case. A little blurb on how to knead dough. If you watch his show One Plate at a Time, his daughter's on it quite a bit and this is like a book version of it. I would recommend this book to those starting out with cooking, whether teen, adult or elder. It doesn't talk down to you and gives you helpful starting tips on what to have in place and done BEFORE any cooking is started. Very easy read.

This is a great resource when working with preteens and older that want to learn to cook and bake.

Good book and in great condition good price as well.

I was expecting more from a book associated with Rick Bayless. I thought it would be only Latin cuisine since that is his claim to fame but it was not. Several of the recipes I tried were ok, but something was missing. Perhaps not as much effort went into the writing of this book since his daughter was involved. Overall I think it was just ok...
