My collection of books are many, but I have never read a book more fervently as when I read through A Midwife in Amish Country: Celebrating God’s Gift of Life by Kim Woodard Osterholzer. Kim’s descriptive and detailed true stories took me alongside her journeys from childhood days, being saved, discovering her calling, studying, learning, praying, to her personal accounts with her beloved husband, children and friends.All five senses were alive as I read regarding the sights from daybreak, to birthing, to starry filled night skies and drives home; sounds of ringing phones, birthing bellows, and sweet conversations between husbands and wives preparing to catch their new born babies; smells of sweet Fall days on Amish farms, and pungent birthing smells and homes; touches of newborn babies, embraces, near fainting, cervical dilations, tracheal dilations; and tasting sweet peaches and green beans from Amish farms. I felt every one of her feelings; I cried, I laughed out loud, I got huge goosies, and I fell in love with Jesus all over again for the sweet ways He took what the world meant for harm, and turned it for Good. His Good.Kim completely changed and enlightened my knowledge of what it means to be a midwife, but she completely changed my life when she became a friend. Her courageous and true story will change your life.To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. I just finished reading this wonderful book! I don't think I will be able to convey how much I enjoyed it, it was so SO good and so real. Kim tells her story amazing and raw and powerful story of becoming a midwife. I cried many times, I laughed many times and I felt like I knew her even though we have never met. I think any women any mother would love this book. I am not a midwife just a mom but many parts of her story feel so close to home. She shares her lessons and her whole heart. With in the first chapter I had goose bumps when I read "Trust is a thing only to be earned, and time is its currency". Thank you to Kim for writing this book! I highly recommend you read it! It is well worth your time and money! I received an advance reader copy from the publisher
Review of book: A Midwife in Amish Country: Celebrating God's Gift of LifeThis is an incredible book. As the title indicates, it is a book about a midwife, in Amish country, celebrating God's gift of life. But it is so very much more. If I were to subtitle it, it would be more like: A new author writes about her experiences from child to nearly midlife, including growing (physically mentally & spiritually), learning (trained or otherwise), maturing, developing friendships, and so much more, culminating in the accomplishment of becoming an accredited Midwife, in Amish Country.I was very impressed by how well-written it was. Intellectually it is an easy read, but be prepared to immerse your heart in the story. This is one of the most moving books I've encountered. I laughed, cried, and prayed throughout the story.I actually ordered a second copy to loan out to friends and family, and I'm looking forward to discovering future books by this author.
I thoroughly enjoyed Kim's book! What an eye-opening, educational look into the real life of a midwife! I've never known much about Midwifery, and this truly was amazing to me. Although I don't know Kim personally, I do know her parents and they are two wonderful people, you definitely inherited their lovingkindness! Thank you for sharing these experiences in your life, Kim. I believe there's something to be gained for everyone in reading this, not just about Midwifery but about life in general. Bless you for writing this book, I look forward to more!
This is a wonderful story! I could hardly put it down. Kim Osterholzer tells an engrossing story of her journey through life, both her spiritual journey and her journey toward becoming a midwife. She struck a good balance between telling stories of births and chronicling her personal growth. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes to read the story of another woman's life—but if you're looking for an “Amish†book, pass this one up. When she describes Amish families, she does not give a romanticized picture like the novels do. She describes reality, and as a person who has had many Amish friends in real life, I can testify that she writes the truth. Daily life is much different than novels!
Do you love homebirth? Overcoming obstacles? Coming of age stories? Then you will, like I did, completely love this book. More than anything, it shows you how to press on to accomplish your goals and pursue the callings in your life. Kim is an inspiration to me, not as a midwife, because I’m not a midwife (but go midwives!) but as a woman and follower of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of Kim Woodard Osterholzer's book, A Midwife in Amish Country and I am so thankful I did! I couldn't wait until the release date of April 30th - I have been reading her blogs and have so enjoyed them that I couldn't wait to read her book. And it did not disappoint me. This book is a lot more than a book about birthing babies. It is about life, love & loss. But more importantly, it is about trusting God for our past, present and future. As Kim wrote, "It's a story about an ordinary woman who, by virtue of her surrender to Jesus Christ, managed to accomplish something extraordinary." Kim is an amazing writer and gifted midwife!
I was looking forward to reading this book but it wasn't exactly what I expected. It was more about the author's religious transformation than an in-depth look at the Amish. Also one of my pet peeves is coming upon typos in a book - it seems to cheapen the book, and this book had more than it's fair share. If I remember correctly, the typos begin in the first paragraph of the first page! Not a good start.
