Fabiola Garza is a Character Artist at Disney Design Group in Orlando, FL. She is the author and illustrator of A Boy Who Became Pope: The Story of St. John Paul II. Prior to these ventures she attended Rhode Island School of Design and went on to work with Hasbro, Hitpoint Studios and Callaway Digital Arts. Fabiola hopes to inspire the young and young at heart to reach new heights of holiness and whimsy with the pictures and words she creates. Some personal quirks include a love of animated features, the counsel of St. Francis de Sales and learning all the skills of a warrior princess.

I do not know why it took me so long to add this book to my collection, but now that I've read it, the truly gorgeous illustrations and sweet storytelling melts my heart. It captures a love for the life of our dear St. Pope John Paul II, showing how his unwavering devotion to God and the Church changed the world. Sharing Karol's life from his birth until his election to the papacy, the author captures his wonder, hope, and love, even in the midst of the many tragedies of his young life. The rich details captured in her incredible illustrations carry the narrative as strongly as the actual text. I'm so excited to share this book with my students and classes to come.Maybe Fabiola Garza and Pauline Books and Media will be adding more collaborations like this one to their titles? I'd love to see more!
Amazing illustrations and a great artist to support. I was however, let down by the way the story was told. The book ends with Karol's Papal Election, and I was dying to read more about his life as Pope! The story is quite gritty for a child (a few deaths, mentions of Nazis). Of course, this is accurate to history, but I found I had a hard time actually gifting this to the child it was intended for. I would love to see a "Part Two", and will likely order this for other children.
This book is sensitive and touching. It really gives a good picture of St JPII's childhood and journey to becoming a pope. Highly recommended.
Beautiful illustrations and excellent storytelling in this work. You can teach a child so much about virtue, life, loss, faith, and love in this one book.

I cry every time I read this book. And a great complement to the other children’s book written about him.
I love everything John Paul II. I wish it was more “kid friendly†with the length. Other than that it was great!
