Now I will never publicly admit to saying any one of these things...especially since my kids are now 20 & 23. BUT...I do plan on using a few to 'decorate' the restroom and lunchroom at work. This is a little coloring book, but it is so adorable. The pages are just what every parent would say at some point in their child's life and the pages have a lot to color. This is great for someone who is a first time parent and loves to color or a gag gift for a friend. I'm absolutely in love with this book and can not wait to color every page. It is absolutely one of my favorite coloring books

Yet another success for John T! The sayings in this book are without doubt not only sayings we heard growing up, but sayings that many of us have now passed on to our lovely children! My favorite has to be the one about crying about your peas touching your chicken, it's just too funny! Although it is a smaller coloring book than his typical releases, I would highly recommend this book! Not just for parents either-for everyone-because we all were a kid once! Bring back your nostalgic days of youth, and order this book!

Love the easy to color designs and swear word quotes. It says in the beginning to use scratch paper behind the page when coloring. And make sure you do! The pages are extremely thin. I would have gladly paid a few bucks more for a coloring book with thicker pages. Nothing fancy about this book, just cute swear word quotes and quick coloring pages.

This is one of my favorite coloring books. Perfect for when the kids go to bed and its time to wind down and color all the words that you would never actually say to them :) . My husband loves it too because it helps me blow off steam instead of taking it out on him. The designs are creative and fun to color. We are provided James’ vision of how tragically divisive the predominant philosophies of the time were, and still are – rationalism versus empiricism, the two major philosophical encampments, with their totally juxtaposed issues, their unwillingness to admit the possibilities of the others validity and their subsequent bickering and passive warfare against each other.James takes many positions, and makes his sides, but never states either is wrong, only farther from what might be his perceived truth as it relates their stances. Arguing monism vs. pluralism, the matters of God, the universe, humanism, the means and ways we come by truth or Truth, James attempts to relay a position which is to the benefit of man, clearly one where the more experienced, often times more educated man is placed in the best possible position to ascertain what it is that is ‘truth’, what guiding principles he holds to direct his life and the means and ways by which even the shallowest ideas hold their benefit. For in Pragmatism nothing is wrong, no ideas are wrong, so long as they provide a benefit to the beholder in some fashion.Lectures:1. The Present Dilemma in Philosophy.2. What Pragmatism Means.3. Some Metaphysical Problems Pragmatically Considered.4. The One and The Many.5. Pragmatism and Common Sense.6. Pragmatisms Conception of Truth.7. Pragmatism and Humanism.The dilemma stems from the parties being divided into two predominant philosophical camps – instead of democrat and republican think empiricist and rationalist – “Most men wish both facts and religion. Empiricism gives facts without religion. Rationalism gives religion without facts’, (21) and ‘empiricist’ meaning your lover of facts in all their crude variety, ‘rationalist’ meaning your devotee to abstract and eternal principles.’ (97) Because, it’s posited, no man can live without both facts and principles, it makes very little sense to assert oneself entirely to one encampment. Acting as an apologist for the pair, James states: ‘Rationalism sticks to the logic and the empyrean. Empiricism sticks to the external senses. Pragmatism is willing to take anything, to follow either logic or the sense.’ (593)The major divisive lines along which the two disagree include: the notion of monism (rationalistic, one overseer and uniting principle) and pluralism (empiricism, making a whole of the sum total of its parts). James notes that, of man: ‘He wants facts; he wants science; he also wants a religion.’ (140) And we can’t have both if we’re entirely steeped in one system of belief.In efforts to settle the debate, quiet the dissenters on either side, James offers the reader ‘the oddly-named thing pragmatism as a philosophy that can satisfy both kinds of demand.’ (268)Pragmatism quickly becomes the philosophy of practical significance, read more precisely: consequence to our daily life and function. We are left with ‘Theories (which become) instruments, not answers to enigmas’ (400) and we’re left with ‘only an attitude of orientation’ (409), it is a ‘looking towards last things, fruits, consequences, facts.’ (410). And the ideas which aide us in acquiring some feeling from these consequences are no less important, for the truth behind an idea means it’s power to work – here James also points out that scientific laws are but generally guiding principles, not formed concretely – and especially so in the humanities, of which philosophy is a part.For the pragmatist ‘Truth, for him, becomes a class-name for all sorts of definite working values in experience.’ (506) This is why the rationalist rebels against him. And yet, theological ideas also bare their benefit in that, if they prove good and effective for the individual they offer principle by which a prosperous life might be led.Also for the pragmatist: ‘The truth is the name of whatever proves itself to be good in the way of belief, and good, too, for definite, assignable reasons.’ (563) – Contrast this possibly with Nietzsche’s ‘Beyond Good and Evil’ but then pseudo-apologize with his ‘Will to Power’ – an individual does what they do simply because it’s seen as being beneficial for them in one manner or another.James tackles the idea of ‘Free Will’ – which he asserts is the ability to expect history not to repeat itself, not so much that we have means to choose a path. He finds that adoption of the Melioristic philosophy: that through human action we can make the world better, is a most profitable stance.Regarding the Truth: ‘True ideas are those that we can assimilate, validate, corroborate and verify.’ (1372). In other words – truth happens and is made, it is not a stand-alone, from the beginning of all time, true. This occurs through the processes of verification and validation. Thusly ideas are ‘useful because it is true or that it is true because it is useful.’ (1396). Because of the nature of verification and validation much of our truth lives ‘on a credit system’ where ‘thoughts and beliefs pass so long as nothing challenges them.’ (1420) – (bear in mind this is a simplified surmise).Quotes:‘I myself believe that the evidence for God lies primarily in inner personal experiences.’ (777)‘When we look at what has actually come, the conditions must always appear perfectly designed to ensure it.’ (812)‘Loosely speaking, and in general, it may be said that all things cohere and adhere to each other SOMEHOW…’ (954)‘It is neither a universe pure and simple nor a multiverse pure and simple.’ (1036)‘borrowing the word from my friend G. As you might expect from a book about pragmatism, this one is fairly dry. The chapters are a series of lectures written and given by William James in the early 1900s. You can slightly tell from the wording that it was written in that time period, but even more noticeable than that is the large vocabulary and lofty language that you would expect from a philosopher. I consider myself to be a pragmatist, and there were a few sections that were interesting, but overall it felt like quite a chore to read this book.

Not fodder for the sluggish mind, William James. His writing is curiously modern, as if what was known a century ago was conveniently forgotten since, only to be refreshingly recalled. My strongest recommendation is to make this, and other writings, required reading. A lot to be relearned that would be currently and immediately applicable regarding his insight of what was known, what was taught and what was allowed to be wasted over time.

William James is a figure who is read widely in theory of religion as well as other areas--psychology, etc. I was very happy to see this a a free book. It adds to my library.

Grandson loves trains and loves this book. He will call me to read to me. I ordered the book so I can help him if he misses a word. Such Fun

This children starter reading book was poorly put together. Its content is very light regarding what makes up a train. The poor quality of this book is exemplified on the first page. The word "cold" was use rather than "coal" to describe a coal freight train. This is not how I want my children to learn how to read.

The train book has a big pro and con going on.Pro: It's a cute book. The pictures captivate my son's interest. The text is mostly informative, and for any kid who is into trains the book is going to be a bit hit.Con: The book has a bad habit of straying away from pictures of trains and informational text. For example, a page about train robberies really only has 1-2 useful sentences. The rest talks about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and explains that after a robbery bandits would ride off to their "hole-in-the-wall". And that page's vocabulary word is "loot". A focus on train robberies could be interesting, but the text fails to accomplish this.Another explain, it digitally adds a man in a train hat introducing himself as "Gary, the Engineer". He's an unnecessary addition to the book that distracts from the main point -- pictures of trains with accompanying informational text.All this being said, my sons still loves the book. I just wish it took a more streamlined approach to the topic like its sister volume, Caterpillars to Butterflies.

I knew that national geographic would have a wonderful book with great illustrations ! I care for a 2 year old who adores trains but I enjoyed reading it as well...I'm quite sure his 5 year old brother will enjoy it. unless you are an expert on trains I'd bet that you'll enjoy the photos and learn something you didn't know about trains !!!

References and language that Shurtleff used in this book are now out-dated (it was published in 1978), but the information he provides is timeless...The real meat of Audition is the second chapter, in which Shurtleff has outlined his 12 Guideposts. In fact, for the acting class I took, the guideposts were the reason this book was assigned...The rest of the chapters in Audition are full of valuable information as well, but I would strongly recommend this book to actors and aspiring actors if only for the guideposts alone, but the entire book is a valuable (but inexpensive!) resource I'm sure I will refer to time and again as I continue to gradually pursue acting as a hobby.(For full review, please visit me at [...])

For anyone searching for a book to learn all the ins-and-outs of auditioning for acting roles, then this is the book to get! The author has several years experience with auditions, and the book is written in a way that is easy to understand. "Audition" looks at the various aspects of preparing for auditions, dressing for auditions, and attending an audition. The author uses simple, easy-to-understand terms along with witty remarks to make the book light and fun. It was a quick and interesting read, even though I was required to read it for a class. It actually help me improve my acting, and helped me greatly with my courses! I would definitely recommend this book to aspiring actors who are looking for more information on auditioning, acting, and roles in theatre productions. It's also a great book for anyone who simply wants to learn and understand what actors and actresses actually do and how hard they work to get their roles. "Audition" was a great read overall and definitely makes the list of favorite required reading material!

In a sea of books of useless repetative outdated advice for actors, this Audition by the late Michaerl Shurtleff with a Intro by Bob Fosse, is really a worthwhile read with fascinating stories about our acting and singing icons today. Insightful, entertaining and fun..

98 % of acting schools of thought are, I would say, a cult of personality mixed with some advice, often presented as iron clad. This is not to denigrate anyone in particular, but I personally always find most devotees to one particular method (or Method) to lack a certain imagination.This book is straightforward, it's no-nonsense, it might inspire you, it might even change your whole career.

Got this book as a companion to a class I took at a local theater on prepping for auditioning. The book (and the class) not only spoke to the art of auditioning but to acting. It is written in such a way that it's a good read even if you aren't interested in acting yourself. You will never watch a performance again with the same set of eyes because of the insights you will gain.

Great book for acting with good information, my only problem was that some of the print on some words was missing which left you guessing what the word was supposed to be which then turned into more of an improv excercise. All in all it was still worth the money.

My personal favorite acting book. His section on the 12 guideposts to creating character for an audition are essential acting advice for the beginner and a wonderful reminder to the veteran actor. As a Broadway and film casting director he tells wonderful stories as examples about auditions he witnessed by such notaries as Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand. Great book.

I studied with Michael Shurtleff in the late 80s; we used his 12 Guideposts as the basis for the work we did onstage. Everything he taught in person is in this book - truly the how-to steps in enriching any seasoned actor's performance, as well as a what-to-do for the beginner. It's hands on, down to earth, and on the money, all stemming from the first guidepost: finding, exploring and using relationship. Relationship in this case means the connecting emotional life that exists, or should exist, between you and the other characters in the play. Vital stuff in easy, entertaining prose. (I would have given it 5 stars, but I'm sensitive to the edgy material included.)

Book has a sarcastic overtone. Harry is a young boy who discovers dinosaur toys in the attic and pretends they have come alive. Gran says on page 3, "Just what do you think you are up to?" Older teen sister enters on page 5, "Sam came in from watching TV. She said ti was stupid, fussing over so much junk." He takes them everywhere, because they are special to him. Then he loses them on the train with his Gran. "never mind" she says.Mom is on the sofa with chocolate on her mouth and a box of candy in front of her watching TV on two separate occasions. Harry seems to be raising himself. It's a depressing story even though the train station man finds them at the end.

My son got this book just before he turned 3, and he instantly loved it. We've read it nearly a hundred times over the past few years, and the book never loses its charm. Definitely one I'm saving for his future kids.

My son liked this book a lot however it is overpriced here. On the back of the I believe it says $6.99. However when I bought this during Christmas it was $10. Just be cautious what price you buy it at. Overall the book itself is very cute and my son was happy with it.

This book is a favorite for me and my just turned 3yr old son who from the pictures on each page tells me the story now! The inside cover also has pictures and names of all the dinosaurs which we have fun with. It is big and bendy and the pages turn fairly easy for little hands but it seems durable too.

Gave this as a gift with some dinosaur figurines. Huge hit!

The book groups images by locations: Central and Western, Chesapeake Bay/Tidewater, Eastern Shore Agriculture/Industry, suburb/city/highway/greenbelt, Baltimore. And then by subject as well: Leisure/Recreation, Maryland Goes to War, Wartime Preparedness, and Life on the Home Front.What I especially appreciated about this book is that there is research done on each of the above categories giving context to what we are seeing. The chapters are prefaced by paragraphs detailing the socio-economic history of that chapter's area and the issues faced by the populace. It really helps to understand why the images that were chosen out of the 8,000 made it into the book and why they were emblematic, symptomatic, or simply great storytelling of the era.The images are all obviously very carefully chosen for their social commentary and showcased large, often spanning two pages. The author went for quality over quantity and I really applaud Ms. Schulz for her selections. Although of the era of Dorothea Lange, they feel less staged and much more candid - giving them a great feeling of honesty and resonance with the viewer. These are by no means artistic marvels - nor were they meant to be when shot. All are technically excellent but the photographers were looking to document not create a masterpiece (not surprising since they shot some 43,000 images). So yes, there are telephone poles going through heads or cut off body parts. But there are also some real gems in there. A couple in the early 40s with their trailer home out camping. A man sitting on the roadside next to an overturned truck and a sign next to him reading, "Danger, industrial crossing." An amazing shot of war-time shipyard at night, lighting up an industrial haze. Sharecropper children sitting on a porch smiling after a paragraph describing the appalling conditions they lived in and solutions sought from New Deal incentives. And so many more. Each image in the book is an amazing story.This book should appeal to a lot of people: Photographers, absolutely. Historians definitely. And of course, those who live in Maryland. But really, this is a fascinating portrait of a State that represents so much of America in one small land area - ishing, agriculture, heavy industry, big City, small towns, and more. And this is an unparalleled glimpse into America in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Really, it resonates beyond that small State and feels like a portrait of pre and post world war II United States life.I received this as an advance review copy from the publisher - it is due out in October.
