John Summers is manager of Heritage Services and Curator for the Regional Municipality of Halton in Ontario, Canada, where he leads, develops, designs and fabricates exhibit projects. He has taught students about museology, material culture, museums and technology, and exhibition design and planning for the Ontario Museum Association, the Fleming College Museum Management and Curatorship Program, the University of Victoria’s Cultural Resource Management Program and the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information, where he is an adjunct lecturer of Museum Studies. He is course director for Exhibit Planning & Design in the Ontario Museum Association’s Certificate in Museum Studies program. His experience spans more than three decades of work at cultural institutions in Canada and the United States.

However, since I am unable to return it, and I am forever stuck with it in my account, I am still going to write my reasoning for not finishing it.The first clue that this book is going to be useless to some is that the author states he has never had an issue with self-discipline. Now, maybe some people find it helpful to have a superior teacher, but for those of us that prefer a teacher that has actually been down in the trenches and pulled him/herself out, this is not one of those situations. And as such, in the pages I pushed through, I noticed a severe lack of empathy. Maybe I'm just a snowflake, and maybe I'm just not disciplined enough (what?? Why would you read a book on self-discipline if you aren't disciplined??), but I like a teacher who knows how to reach me through my own fog, rather than calling out above the mist and saying "Just make good decisions! That's all there is to it!"Also, I was hoping the book would have a more general focus (school work, work work, house work, socializing, etc), instead, I almost feel like the book is just a screed against people who are overweight. Meadows harps on food and eating habits and food journaling and candy bars as though food discipline is the only possible pitfall people face. Again, this book is a strong DID NOT FINISH, and maybe he tries to branch out with his examples, but I just got irritated with his technique thus far.If you're in to tough love and no nonsense (and a teacher who is very self-congratulatory), please, by all means try this one out. Maybe it gets better. Maybe.But if you want to learn techniques from someone who knows that self-discipline can be difficult (and can sometimes be a form of self-care and love that those with severe mental disorders and illnesses have a difficult time prioritizing), I suggest avoiding this author. I actually also suggest pinpointing a specific focus you want to improve your self-discipline in, and look for an author with that focus, rather than attempt a general catchall. For instance, I'm interested in being more disciplined with my daily writing, so I picked up a couple very good books about that specific subject. I'm sure a little research will direct you to whatever your weak area may be.But I don't suggest this book.

If you're an educated, knowledgeable person who reads a lot, you will either give up or start skimming when you hit the end of chapter 1. The authors tone is self satisfied, uncompassionate, even contemptuous in places. I'm a coach/licensed counselor so I know that you don't have to be so nasty in order to be very blunt. So skim. To chapter 6. The gems in this chapter and 7, plus all those lovely citations, save this work. I hope the author develops some wisdom and humility and revises, but if he doesn't, that is my suggested roadmap.

I was hoping for tips and tools to make this happen, and this book was really just the author talking about how wonderful he is and how disciplined he is.

The real content length is more like 20-25 pages. This "book" reads more like a high school term paper and was an awkward read. While there are a few good tips, it was not worth the few dollars it cost.

Good starter book or refresher course in self-motivation. I would not do some of the things he does (like cold showers or extremely long fasts) but, as he says, these are only suggestions which he encourages you to create your own incentives. Overall, good book, with lots of references for deeper research.

There are some useful tips in Martin's book. That being said it reads more like a college thesis rather than a book. Many of the ideas and concepts are left undeveloped.Meadows shares some of his "why's" but often leaves out the how's.Like many self-published books it lacks polish but there's still some good substance.

The author describes himself as a self-disciplined person and thanks his mom for his being so. The author describes the book as answering two fundamental questions:• How do you build self-discipline in your life?• How do you resist short-term rewards in order to reach your long-term goals?The author states that he loves to test his boundaries to see how far his self-control will go. Readers of the book benefit from what he learned from his experiences and his knowledge of the published self-discipline research literature.Between his own life experiences and the published research he cites, this seven chapter book lays out a framework the author believes one can use to enhance their self-discipline.I found the book to be an easy, engaging read. If you are interested in building your self-discipline, starting with this book would be a good starting point for you.

Great set of simple ideas to build your ability to do what needs to be done. I've also listened to the book on Audible while doing my daily workouts for some great self reminders. Martin kept the instruction steps simple and easy to follow. We all have something we want to change in our lives and this book really helped reinforce past learnings on how to build a new habit to eliminate an old one. Don't think I'll try some of Martin's personal challenges but I really have found success in his ideas to build on good keystone habits.

Kimberly Shursen is irritating. I was on a six-hour flight and took plenty of paper work with me. Unfortunately, I went to "Conviction" instead of working. I was just going to read for a few minutes. I ended up reading the entire flight; I got no work done. Kimberly's books grab my throat and heart. My throat because the twists and turns in her novels grab me and won't let me quit reading. My heart because I can feel my heart rate racing. "Conviction" deals with one of the most difficult people to rehabilitate...emotionally, relationally and spiritually. That person is the religious zealot who reads his scriptures and applies and lives them in a twisted way...and thinks he is on a God-ordained mission. Such a person completely violates Jesus' words to take the log out of our own eye before we take the speck out of our brother's eye. Once again, Kimberly's creativity, writing abilities and research make for a fast-paced, exciting and fun read. Rev. Dr. John Vawter

As always, I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Kimberly Shursen novel. I actually know Kimberly IRL so it is amazing to me that I am friends with such a talented writer - particularly since she's had a successful carreer and life as well as other artistic endeavors but didn't start as a novelest until she was.... (not gonna say - but she isn't as old as me :)I've recommended her books to friends and no one has ever told me that they weren't delighted with the read. Can't wait for the next one!

I've been a follower of Kimberly's books from the beginning. I'm always in "awe" with each one. I always try to become one of the characters of the book....and this one was the best! I thought I'd read a few chapters on my day off, then finish it later.....NOT! It held me captivated until the end and then I was what? Did it just end this way? I am so looking forward to the next one......Keep up the good work Ms. Shursen....... I'll be patiently waiting for the next one!

I have read every book from this author and found this one to be most sinister in many ways. It was not predictable at all and really quite scary as this book describes things that are going on in the world today that I would rather not know about. It took me a few chapters to get started but once I got there, I just had to keep reading. Highly recommend this book as it will challenge your standards of what is normal, what normal really is and what we wish "normal" to be.Great author.... Waiting for the next one.... :)

I'm so happy the book finished with"THE END...for now".Just like all of Kimberly Shursen's books, Conviction has you wanting to learn more about each character. If you put the book down, if you HAVE to, you are still left wondering about the story or people in it as you go about your day.You're drawn into the mind and life of a psychopath who believes he's doing God's work. Once you reach the end you think it's over but you're in for another story that just begins. Conviction is a must read!

What a excellent read!! Once again, was not disappointed at all with yet another book by Kimberly Shursen!!The story really grabbed my attention right from the start and I was on the edge of my seat at the end!!

Anna Lewis's book is a solidly researched, informative and well organized resource covering the history (from the very early days to more contemporary stories) of women entering the fields of architecture and engineering. Including photos (of the women profiled along with examples of their work), as well as citing additional suggested sources for further reading on each subject, the chapters strike a perfect balance of not feeling daunting or overwhelming, while simultaneously being substantial enough to stand on their own. Particularly impressive is how Lewis so effectively crafted an intriguing compilation that is "meaty" enough for more mature readers while at the same time presenting everything in completely accessible manner for younger audiences as well. Indeed, "Women of Steel and Stone" is a fascinating read both for adults interested in the subject (or hey, even if they're not!) and for kids alike (who may very well be inspired to travel down one of these career paths themselves after learning so much from this book). I figured just from reading the author's bio saying she teaches classes on (among other things) monster making, that I would enjoy this book... and I'm sure you will too!

Women of Steel and Stone is one of the best non-fiction books for kids I’ve ever read. One bonus of Chicago Review Press non-fiction titles is that they are so interesting, they appeal to parents too. This book delves into the lives of 22 women who have left their marks on the world of architecture, engineering and landscape design – all fields that have been historically male dominated. Each woman's story is incredibly compelling and fascinating. My personal favorite is the story of Emily Warren Robeling, who was instrumental in the building of the Brooklyn Bridge in the 1800s. Since most people experience discrimination of one sort or another, reading about women who overcame extraordinary obstacles to accomplish greatness is incredibly motivating. When children read the biographies they will see that what all these women had in common were a good education, supportive parents and unfaltering perseverance no matter what came their way. This book will inspire all those who read it to pursue careers without limitation and aspire to use their skills to the fullest. I highly recommend this book!

I grew up just down the coast from Hearst Castle and made many visits to the "Enchanted Hill" over the years. I was always fascinated by the fact that a woman designed the castle in the early 1900's and even engineered a unique system to bring water to the castle from a well 7 miles away. What a delight it was for me to discover that the author included Julia Morgan in this collection of inspirational women in the fields of engineering, architecture, and landscape design. This is an inspirational book to any young woman considering her gifts and her future!

Pop's birthday is coming up, and since I was struggling to find him a novel gift (what do you get someone 80+ that he doesn't already own) I thought he'd appreciate several bottles of wine and maybe find them from the regions of the world he'll be hitting on his Mediterranean cruise come Fall. Question is "How do you even begin to select a winner?" and then I remembered this book I downloaded and thought I'd browse it for some answers. Book ended up having some great ideas as I read through Chapter 2 "How to Recognize a Good Wine", Chapter 7 "Well Known White Grape Varieties", Chapter 8 "Well Known Red Grape Varieties" and Chapter 9 "What You Really Need to Know About Appellations" (the last section being one I'll need to brush up on again.) For those wanting something about history, health benefits/risks, fortified wines, serving temps, food pairings, etc there's that, too if you're interested.Anyways, wrote down some pertinent info like trying for varieties with around 12% or less alcohol for more balanced flavor, read the back of the labels to see if they were coming from the right regions of the countries I was aiming for as well as looking for popular varieties and then went into my local Friar Tucks armed and ready. Spain and Italy turned out to be easy picks (thanks to the book!) France I spent more time than I wanted (should have read more) and while I wanted a Sauvignon Blanc from Greece it was unavailable so I settled on a good quality domestic.If you're curious as to what I bought, I ended up with the following varieties:2010 Crianza by Principe de Viana, Spain blended Cabernet with Tempranillo & Merlot from Navarra region 13.5% alc $13,99 per bottle2012 Chianti by Cecchi from hills of Tuscany, Italy 12.5% alc $10.99 per bottle2013 Graves by Chateau Des Perligues, France blended Semillon & Sauvignon from region of Bordeaux 12% alc $12.99 per bottle2013 Sauvignon Blanc Franciscan Estate, Napa Valley, CA 13% alc. $14,99 per bottle (Couldn't find Greek as mentioned before but did rate an 87 on a scale of 100).Book ended up helping me a lot, Hope these were good picks (and that my dad invites me over to sample them). Only critique I have would be to provide handy links from table of contents so you could easily access each chapter and the wealth of info provided. Very good book and I do recommend as it is packed with useful information!

Wine makes me happy, and I never once thought about what makes it good until I stumbled across this book. The detailed breakdown of grapes used, regions and proper aging has become a cool parlor trick when I want to surprise my friends with my wine knowledge, such as stay away from California wines if you don't particular care for the oakier tasting wines and sweet wines should be ages less than two years to maintain maximum sweetness. This guide has also made me better at reading the wine labels so even on my cheaper bottles I know the higher quality wines for my price point. Unlike some other guides, this book doesn't try to convince you of what wines are "good" or which ones you should like. It instead chooses to informs you on what your favorite wine type ( Riesling for myself ) is made from, the region, grapes and aging of it. From there it simply suggest ways to get the most wuality from your wine without overthinking it. Not all the information here is mandatory to enjoy the wines you love. I would flip to my favorite types, find what to look for then take that information with me when grocery shopping. I've picked better wines that is normally pass over with the information I found here! I'm happy for my new favorites and I'm sure if you read this book you'll find some new favorites too!

I am not a very educated man when it comes to wines. I am more of a beer guy. When it comes to wines, I like them just fine, but it always seemed to me like they are reserved for snobby types. Well, I was wrong and this book helped me realize that.This is a very well-rounded guide on wines, it is detailed and comprehensive, but interesting enough to keep you reading. It is not just listing facts, I even had fun with reading it. I definitely learned a lot, and while I probably would not feel comfortable discussing wines in public just yet, I am on a way to doing so. Recommended from me.

A friend of mine gifted me with white wine most recently. Well, actually I think it was a remnant of the gifts she got over the holidays. Reading this book makes you feel like an expert. History of wines, kinds of wines, health benefits and dangers of drinking too much wine etc. are well presented. However, more wine tasting experience and more research is what it takes for one to be a certified wine connoisseur.

I have enjoyed a drop of wine for decades however, I am far from a a connoisseur. Now that I have a little more time on my hands I thought it would be nice to learn some more and I purchased this book. To mention a few topics; it covered the history, regions, terms used to describe wines, serving temperatures, pairing food with wine and tips on choosing the right glass to best bring out the flavor and aroma. I also learned of a new phobia: Oenophobia, and I am so glad that I do not suffer from this! haha.I now plan on joining a wine tasting club as I continue my journey to learn more. I really enjoyed this book and I know I will refer back to it from time to time.

Personally I love wines and that is why I got so interested with this book. And this book is so interesting, I learn on how to look at the good quality wine, the best wine producer region and how to look on prices while still getting the wine that I really want. I learn how to recognize a good wine. A lot of very useful and so informative, you will not only learn how to be a good wine selector but you will learn so much information about the history of wines, grapes varieties, different wines from all over the world and the different sparkling and fortified wines. Wine drinking is a pleasure and a privilege. We should taste and enjoy it! I really had fun and enjoyed reading this book. Cheers!

This book came in great condition and has taught me an incredible amount about being a museum educator. I am so happy to have this book for reference and to expand my knowledge on education in museums!
