There is peace in our home, and our children have benefited greatly through intentional, faithful (yet flawed at times) discipline and instruction. We gift these books to almost every new parent we know! Besides the Bible, these are our go-to parenting books. We also love Ginger Plowman's book "Don't Make Me Count to Three".

We recently purchased this book for a group study...while it has some great information, I feel it's a bit of a dry read, at the least first few chapters. I think sticking with it is beneficial but there are other books (check out Author Scott Turanksy) that I've enjoyed and benefited from a little more.

This book is amazing! A great sequel to Shepherding A Child's Heart. The author goes into great detail explaining methods of discipline that are clearly outlined in God's Word. Tripp opened my eyes to correct and incorrect forms of discipline with an emphasis on instructing by using teachable moments. I learned what I was doing wrong and how to fix it. He illustrates imperative conversations that must take place in the home by giving clear explanations. Very important for parents to read and implement the instructions in this book.

Wonderful book with lots of insight into going beyond behavior modification to actually reaching your child's heart. Doing a study on it with a group of friends- we think the "lessons" they suggest teaching to children are a bit too long for young children, but the book is very solid, Biblically based, and challenging!

I enjoyed reading Wangari Maathai's memoir, especially her childhood, and journey to early adulthood, and the final years of her work after she won the Nobel Prize. Her struggle to protect Kenyan forests and promote women's rights and advocate for environmental protection through the Green Belt Movement, especially under a repressive government regime, is admirable and inspiring.Two things I struggled with as I read about her work with the Green Belt Movement are her tendencies to belittle Kenyans and portray herself as an absolute victim.Because of her work, Maathai was constantly harassed by local government authorities. During these moments, she would appeal to her international networks of friends and colleagues to encourage the Kenyan Government to put the environment before destructive developmental projects, arguing that Kenyans are too busy trying to earn a living, or not as aware of environmental conservation as people in the West are. This is a contradiction with what she claims several times about generations past who had systems of protecting the environment. She even demonstrates it through stories about growing up amongst lush rivers and forested areas in the forties and fifties.Finally, in the face of constant adversity, it may be inevitable to take the tone of a victim, constantly attacking the mechanisms and institutions that prevent one from doing their work. Maathai falls into this trap, which diminishes her heroism and struggle. As a woman who achieved such prominence, she could have held her head up a little higher, especially in her lucid writing, to give a more powerful account of the years she spent building the Green Belt Movement.

I would recommend buying from this seller. The book was as expected, and delivered as stipulated. I am Kenyan, in USA for my studies and just wanted to read about Prof. Wangari Maathai and share with my lab mates. I have not been disappointing. A great book for people who want to understand struggles that some people go through to save a country. Kenya, a country in East Africa, where I was born, is a beautiful country, gained independence from the British in 1963, and has had self seeking leadership since. There is much glory in tribalism and those who rise above it get the wrath for abandoning their tribes. Such was the case of Wangari Maathai, who at one time got the full wrath of her tribe for not supporting their son president Kibaki. Many are the examples like Raphael Tuju who is a great leader but defied Odingaism etc. Kenya, overall has the most humane people, they share their personal space, kids are happiest playing soccer, neighbors share even basic commodities and that is what I love about this country.Kenyans are the most sacrificing as the common people are willing to die poor and wear torn slippers for the rest of their lives to support tribe dominance and not quality leadership.This is something strange to people of developed world, where you cannot win in your state if not seen as quality in regard to policy, as was the case with Romney.Policy is not issue in places like Kenya, tribe is.But People like Maathai only make us dream that just maybe, one day, we will move above our tribes and be one Kenya. I have hope, and hope is a great thing to have.

Everyone should read this book. I cannot stress enough how great it is. Wangari Maathai pulls no punches as she details the colonization of Kenya and tells the story of her life, and yet she maintains a view of positivity and hope. The reader for the audiobook and is wonderful, emotive, and has a beautiful voice. Highly recommend.

Love this! It was a required reading for me for my ecofeminism book so I bought it for that reason and even though I was only assigned like 6 chapters I flew through the entire book in one day! Such an important book to read and Wangari Maathai is an incredible inspiration. I cannot recommend this enough. And also, I got my book in the form of paper back and it was in really good quality. I've been throwing it around in my bag for a bit now and it's still holding up lmao.

The late Wangari Maathai started a movement in Kenya to plant millions of trees. But she was not merely an environmentalist who loved trees. She got people to plant trees as a way of healing a devastated landscape. How is a poor rural family in Africa supposed to ever rise out of poverty if the woman must walk hours each day just to get firewood from forests that recede farther and farther away each year? As Maathai said on NPR, "The situation of a woman cutting down the last tree to cook her last meal is one we must avoid." No wonder Maathai got the Nobel Peace Prize. Science, at its best, is in the service of humankind, not merely to understand the world. I have more admiration for Maathai--who had to, as described in this book, face overwhelming obstacles from corrupt government interests--than for almost anyone else in human history.

One of my heroes! Kenya's Wangari Maathai was the first African woman and first environmentalist to win the Nobel peace prize; she was also a fearless activist for democracy, women's rights, and sustainable development, and a brilliant story teller, too! I used the book in a number of college courses, to great avail. Many students found her story inspirational, unique and clearly told.

She wrote in a direct voice and outlined the building of the Green Belt Movement in a scientific way. She did not shy away from showing shortcomings of her choices and showed her strength in how she built on the silver lining of an outcome. I liked knowing she included her allies in the home and in the community. She had a support system. She also showed compassion for those who acted in the ways they thought were best but had negative effects on the greenest movement. Her level of diplomacy and respect for others makes her a strong role model to mirror.

As anyone can tell from my previous reviews, I don't pull punches or spare criticism when I encounter a TCM or Classical Chinese medical book that fails to deliver. Well, this delivers bigtime and I'm very pleased with it. The organization is didactic, the translations appear reasonable and, thank goodness, the full Hanzi, fully accented PinYin and the translation are close by and easily accessible.It is obvious that meticulous scholarship went into the production of this book and it should prove to be the standard book on this topic for some time to come.As an unexpected bonus, the reader is treated to an absolutely superb chapter towards the end of the book on the topic of a kind of introduction to the nuances of classical Chinese and the typical grammatical constructs and idioms characteristic of medical books of this era. It is one of the finest introductions I've seen on the topic and an unexpected treasure in a book filled with commentary, translations and explanations which make the work of the student a delight instead of an unending search through obscure dictionaries and readers.As a graduate, not too long ago, of a medical college of Traditional Chinese medicine, I can say that this book will have a central spot on my medical bookshelf for some time to come!Highly recommended and my profound thanks to the people involved in its production!

I really enjoyed reading this book about a Queen that so few people know about. She lived a fascinating life but she died in disgrace and was promptly forgotten about by history. This is a woman who defied the standards of her day and rose to great power. She managed to sway Popes and Kings to her side and survived numerous attempts at her crown. Towards the end, it was so sad to see how it was all taken from her by a family member she had provided for and cared for throughout his life. Even though you knew it wasn't possible, you kept hoping Joanna would find yet another way to survive and overcome. Ms. Goldstone did a wonderful job of telling a warts and all story all the while still keeping the reader sympathetic to Joanna. I now wish there were more books about Queen Joanna but, as far as I can tell, this is it for biographies about Queen Joanna that have been written in my lifetime. I recommend picking up this book and learning about a fascinating Queen.

Although I read quite a bit of history, I was not very familiar with the life of Joanna of Naples. I found the book well researched and very informative as well as very fascinating to read - not at all "heavy". It not only gave me a good overview of the life and times of this not very well known queen but also of the "Hungarian connection" - I had not realised that at the time the Hungarian royal family was descended from one of Joanna's relatives. I continue to be amazed at the papal courts and how anyone could take the popes and the church hierarchy seriously in view of their scheming, venality, etc. etc. Poor Joanna dependent on such institutions.

This is a very "fat" book full of details and many historical personages. It starts with a bang - a powerful young queen appearing before the Pope to defend herself of charges that she arranged her husband's death. But that is something of a teaser, and it quickly reverts to giving important by dry backstory about Joanna's grandfather and the various claims to the throne.There was so much going on - rival Popes, four husbands, intriguing heirs... but I found it a bit hard to follow though I love historical biographies in general. The depth of research is evident, but the writing style doesn't enchant.

I must admit when I first saw this, I assumed it was about the only Joanna I was familiar with: Joanna of Castile or Joanna the Mad. When I looked at it more closely, I realized it wasn't about her and dismissed it. But then when it popped up on sale I thought why shouldn't I let myself be introduced to a historical figure I've never heard of?And I'm glad I did! Joanna's life was both tragic and impressive. My main complaint about the other book I'd read by Goldstone was that there wasn't much known about the main historical figures and so with at least two of them, their lives didn't seem all that eventful. But that was not a problem this time; Joanna's life was extremely eventful.It's a highly political book that can be hard to follow if you're not familiar with the players involved, which I wasn't. But it's well worth the effort to learn about some of the remarkable and fascinating events that went on in and around the life of this Queen of Naples. For anyone, let alone a woman in medieval times, to navigate this political minefield must have taken great strength and intelligence. Goldstone highlighted a much overlooked, tragic but admirable historical figure who no doubt deserves much more mainstream appreciation than she's received. The writing style was a little dry at times and as ever, I struggled to remain interested in the military bits, but overall, I really enjoyed learning about this amazing woman and the people around her.

The more biographies I read of the mostly miserable lives of royal women in the Middle Ages, the more it is apparent that it was no blessing being born anywhere near a throne in those times. Essentially all of these women - queens included - were viewed as mute integers only in the marriage equations and international power struggles. This was particularly true for this most unfortunate Queen of Naples, Joanna I, who suffered mightily from a series of nightmarish marriages, including one to a husband who beat her regularly and one to a man who was widely viewed as insane even in his own time. With the sole exception of her last consort, all of the men in her life - including the serial Popes - treated her with ruthless disregard - if not physical brutality- in their personal quests for power. It seems every third paragraph begins, "At this time, Joanna was beset..." which, based on this recounting of events, was completely true as she encountered nothing but one crisis after another during her long rule. The fact that she is the saddest queen you probably never heard of, and ruled a considerable swath of territory for a very long time, makes it surprising that she is so little known to history. Perhaps her ignominious end has something to do with how little her name has endured unlike other more well known female sovereigns. In any case, Goldstone does a very creditable job here of telling Joanna's woeful story in a most readable fashion. I was appalled to read in the end notes that a good bit of original source material from this period was destroyed by the Nazis and hence is no longer available. The author here has relied in part on earlier biographers who had access to these primary sources before they were regrettably destroyed. The book moves along in a brisk narrative style and, although thoroughly annotated at the back, the text itself is not interrupted with citations and footnotes which can often be distracting. An excellent discussion of a turbulent time in pre-Renaissance Europe when castles were still being beseiged and thrones were won by intrigue and strength of arms. 4.5 stars

This is a region that I know so little about and the writer brings it alive. His journey through this strange and compelling land is an eye-opener. From the customs of the people whom he got to know intimately, and the landscape itself, one learns so much about what makes Oman what it is. IN a time of turmoil in the Middle East it is a refreshing story of hope.

I couldn't put this book down. I knew very little about Oman when I decided to read Arabian Skies. Now I've added a trip to Oman to my bucket list. I only wish Rory would write more books! Highly recommended.

For someone who spent 10 years in Oman, this is a very thin book. As a memoir to share with family and friends, it is of interest, but the author had a great opportunity to write an anthropological study of the bedouin of Oman from first hand observation. He spent so much time with them, but there are so few details on their language,their way of life in the desert, in modern day Oman and speculation on the future of these tribal people. It is more a series of anecdotes. He mentions Alfred Thesiger's Arabian Sands with reverance. Wished that he had studied Thesiger in more detail. Now that is a story. I did not learn one new fact about the bedu from this book. Perhaps I might have if he had elucidated on the last sentence of the chapter Wedding, page 121, "Subsequent to the wedding, I did not see Juma for a few years. Both he and I knew the reasons why." For the life of me, I cannot figure out what he was talking about. Would love to know, but would not buy a sequal if it were to be published.

I enjoyed this personal account of a land I had barely heard of. The chance to see it through the eyes of someone from a similar culture made it relative and easier to comprehend.

The author's begining and end show entwined themes in the book which is a combination of visitor's travel book and personal exploration. He states that for an Omani his village is the most beautiful in Oman - the sense of communal belonging is a strong driver of the Omani psyche. Then at the end , where he has just visited the grave of a close Omani friend he realizes that although one journey has finished another one is about to start. His own personal odyssey in the land which he so evidently loves is one theme of the book, detailing his desert visits with his bedouin friends, and the natural beauty of the topography which he meshes with the history of the locale to bring out the essence of modern and ancient Oman. There are travels and travails in the book - the author's own mystical experiences are revealed along with this unique odyssey, expressed with wry good humour and keen observation. Read it for an authentic personalised guide to the attractions of Oman and its hospitable people

An excellent book about a very fascinating travellers tales. This book is really well written, informative and interesting account of cultural facts about Oman. I thorougly enjoyed all the stories specially the one about the prophet Job. A great book from start to finish. The best holiday guide book you will ever read because it is so different and unique. I highly recommned this book.

This book is an open and intimate view of life in a very foreign land. Here is a man who has taken a totally different path to the many Europeans expats across the world. As opposed to the usual route of staying with the rest and enjoying the fruits of life as a foreigner Rory chose to immerse himself in the life of the local community living in villages around the bases he worked on. As a result these stories are of life as lived in an Omani community which is a rare thing for any westerner to have experienced.This is not your average travelogue as few westerners will ever be privileged enough to see the life that Rory has led. I'm sure this book has only scratched the surface of Rory's experiences in Oman and that there are many more stories yet to be told.I greatly enjoyed this readable book, like having a conversation with a good friend who cares passionately about the country and its people.
