The Story of Snow is one of Julien's favorite books. Not only does this book contain stunning pictures of dozens of snow crystals, but it also explains the creation of snow in ways that will engage children young and older. The entire life of a snow crystal, from creation to withering, is included in the book with special emphasis placed on the uniqueness of all crystals and the imperfections that we are likely to see. The easy to read text and great imagery make this book special, and the final page about how to catch and observe crystals will allow kids to try out what they have learned on a snowy day. Check out more of Julien's reviews on his Youtube channel - julesandmetv and follow us on twitter @julesandmetv

Teaches how snow forms in a way little ones can understand. I thought the diagrams and limiting what was shown on each page really helped kids focus. I think the overall simplicity feeling when flipping through the book is much better than the jam-packed pop-up text boxes and over color pages of other kid science books.

This is a fabulous book full of great pictures and information about snow. Enjoyable for adults and children who love snow.

This book does not translate well into a kindle edition book. I haven't ever seen the book in person, but I would imagine it is laid out more logically.

My class of preschool kids enjoy this look at snowflakes. While it may be intended for an older audience, the 3 year olds in my class have requested this book over and over. We carefully trace the speck of dirt becoming a snowflake and carefully count the "points" on the snowflakes each time. Excellent book!!

Beautiful photos of snowflakes...the real deal! Excellent details to make this a keeper for children. Would also be a wonderful tool for those teaching children!

This is a good book for children and adults alike. With pictures and descriptions (not too long, not too short) it acquaints the reader with the basics of snow, how it is formed and why it looks like flakes.

This book is just something fun to know. I bought this for my grade school grandchildren. We live where it doesn't snow. Thought it would just be fun to teach and then go to the mountains to the snow this winter.

Renouncing Violence: Practice from the Monastic Tradition

Review

"In the book Renouncing Violence, Sr. Mary Margaret Funk takes a uniquely monastic view of violence and its end. There are no charts or graphs on violence, but rather windows into her monastic practice, wisdom, and faith. I enjoyed and learned the most from her personal stories and self-reflection, going deep into her own anger, searching for a solution and ultimately finding it. Her understanding of thoughts and where they came from, helped along by her many years of work with Buddhists was particularly interesting and useful. The phrase, `World peace begins with inner peace' seems to be the heart and soul of this book."Ven. Kusala Bhikshu"This is a necessary book at a time when, as Meg Funk puts it, we are `in a global bad mood,' and angry voices and violent actions grab the headlines. She makes a convincing argument that the Christian tradition—in Scripture, in the life and death of Jesus, in the coming of the Holy Spirit, and in the practice of prayer—offers a way out of retaliation and violence. As challenging as this book is, it is also reassuring: if the renunciation of violence is our response to the magnitude of God's love for us, Funk asserts that it is the Spirit who gives us the capacity to find our way to reconciliation and peace."Kathleen Norris, Author of Dakota: A Spiritual Geography and The Cloister Walk"In the current time, violence is pervasive and pronounced. Violence grips our collective and individual spirits. In her book, Renouncing Violence, Sr. Meg Funk skillfully invites us to return to the deep-seated roots of the monastic tradition in an effort to renounce that which has taken hold of us during this tenuous and volatile time. By renouncing violence in all forms, we rediscover who we are and return to that which we are called to be—people of love and compassion, becoming healers for that which violence has destroyed. As Sr. Meg emphatically states throughout her book, in renouncing violence we shift from harm to healing. Renouncing Violence is needed now more than ever. The book invites us all to practice training our minds and hearts from self-consciousness to God-consciousness for a world in desperate need of peace, reconciliation, and freedom from the forces of evil."Mary M. Heintzkill, MTS, BCC, Director of Spiritual Care and Mission Integration, Ascension"In the face of almost overwhelming anger and violence active in our culture and world-at-large, we ask, `How can we bring about healing and reconciliation?' Sr. Mary Margaret Funk offers a means: inner work. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can train our minds to uproot angry thoughts and actions that fuel violence in our world. Renouncing Violence is a timely, important, and practical guide to the necessary inner work to become vessels of healing in our world."Fr. Daniel Chowning, OCD"Once again Sister Meg has taken the ancient desert spirituality and made it meaningful for twenty-first century city dwellers. She has a wonderful way of being faithful to her Roman Catholic tradition while stretching us to experience God's all-encompassing compassionate love. Meg turns the tables on some age-old interpretations of Jesus' behavior in the temple; the wrathful God who demands atonement for our sins and the Church as God's instrument for punishment."She is an excellent teacher. As a Benedictine living in Mexico and often surrounded by violence, I might have preferred a `quick fix' to my situation; but then anyone who knows Meg Funk would never go to her for easy, `out-there' solutions to their problems. A word of advice: don't miss the appendices."Patricia Henry, OSB, Monasterio Pan de Vida, Torreon, Mexico

Few remain among us who know, practice, and can transmit the deepest, most profound spiritual practices of the Christian tradition with grace and true understanding. Sr. Meg Funk is one of these, a true catechist, formed by a lifetime committed to Benedictine monasticism. Her perspectives on renouncing violence as a personal spiritual practice have been broadened out by lengthy engagement and diaglogue with other spiritual traditions devoted to peace as a transformational practice. Recognizing in her own experience of anger how thoughts and feelings escalate into violence, this master teacher brings forward in accessible ways the wisdom of elders and saints of the faith which enable us through grace to transform anger into calm and potential violence into humility and love. Those who recognize their own as well as our world’s great need for such teachings and welcome guidance on how to put them into practice will find much to drawn upon here. Sr. Meg’s enlightening chapter on peaceful uses of holy water in daily practice is a beautiful example. The bibliography alone is a compact summary of the wisdom embedded in the Christian spiritual tradition.

This review is for the A.E. Stallings translation published March of 2018. Amazon, bizarrely, has all the ratings for previous editions on this page too. I read the kindle edition and found it great for jumping back and forth to notes (which, btw, are fun and informative; not stodgy or academic). The translation reads so smoothly in English one might think it an English original, something some translators think is wrong but is very much right. And the preface was fascinating for someone who's not at all a classicist to read. The only drawback is Hesiod's work. I would not be surprised if his brother (to whom this lecture on all things correct is addressed) stopped speaking to his brother for good.

The exposure I got to Hesiod in college was both too much and too little at the same time. There was a lot that I encountered in translation, but so little of it was absorbed. Old translations really made Hesiod an archaic poet. Stalling makes Hesiod a singer and lets some personality out of these old texts.I also highly recommend readers dig into the introduction and notes—where Stallings also lets her own personality and judgments and scholarship slip in. Being able to place Hesiod in a historical context helped me make sense of these poems.

An average translation of Hesiod, with the 'economics' commentary not terribly deep.

I purchased Works and Days but found even in the introduction, so many typographical and setting errors that I have to wonder if the quality of the translation or the setting of the poetry itself is correct. Poetry requires exactness. There are sentences cut off, misspelled words, sentences started without capital letters, sentences broken up in mid stream to become two sentences, and odd breaks, and all of this just in the introduction! I suspect many of these issues were not the result of the writer, but the result of the format/editing of the book for this new medium. The administrative processing of this project, seems at best, rushed. Such a poorly executed product indicates no final read through or editing eyes surveyed Works and Days to verify that the e-book matched the actual book. I feel badly for David Grene.

Good read for anyone

Great! One of the foundational works of Ancient Greece, alongside Homer's Iliad. Well worth it for modern readers. Hesiod rocks!!

nice addition to my collection. translation comments are great , especially for the new or non student. really good value

I'm a non-Ancient Greek reader who was looking for a good thorough commentary on Hesiod's "Works and Days". I tried a couple of different versions and this Tandy-Neale text was the best one that I came across. It features an excellent introductory essay and super detailed explanatory notes that run opposite the translated text. Don't let the technical sounding subtitle, "A Translation and Commentary for the Social Sciences", scare you off, the layman who is interested in the poem from primarily a literary perspective has a lot to gain from this book. Definitely recommended.

Lucille Colandro is another on of my favorite children-book authors. This story is an awesome summer-time, or anytime read.( I've been collection her series, too. Children just can't get enough of "The Old Lady - rhyme" ... and continually wonder what will she swallow next... )

What an adorable book! My son is 1 1/2 and loves "there was an old lady" books. They are very sing-songy and keep his attention well. He always laughs when we read "I don't know why she swallowed the shell". The book is repetitive making it easy for him to follow along and say words he knows in the book. I was able to purchase this book gently used from Amazon, which saved us a ton of money! This book is definitely a keeper!

I would "sing read" all of the "There Was an Old Lady..." stories in my general music classroom. It was a favorite amongst all of my grades...especially my lower elementary students. They always knew when a holiday or new season was approaching, I would pull one of these out. They would sing it with me!

My daughter is 4, and she loves this series. For nights when I think I'm going to be too tired for storybook time, the rhymes liven me up to enjoy the sweet time with her. I love the whole series and highly recommend!

My wife's kindergarten class loves this book!

I love this book! It’s a great book to read to kids.

our granddaughter loves all the old lady books

My daughter loved this book, actually we bought 4 of these series and she wants to reread them every night!!

Gobekli Tepe is an enigma that cries out for an explanation. It is a massive temple complex with some clear astronomical references. Its construction and active usage spanned thousands of years. But its original builders were simple, nomadic hunter-gatherers who shouldn't have been building anything more than a stick lean-to for a night's sleep. No dry recounting of site plans and building locations can possibly do it justice. Gobekli Tepe demands that we ask Who? Why? and How? And by extension it makes us ask who we are and how we became the people and society we are today.Collins does an admirable job at addressing these questions. Understanding that such unprecedented structures could only have resulted from a sea-change in human thought and experience, he connects the astronomical aspects of the temple to the Younger Dryas Impact Event which had caused such a physical and psychological upheaval in human existence. Following the same logic that Settegast had outlined in "Plato Prehistorian", Collins explores how the climactic upheaval of the impact led to global collapse of social structures and widespread human migrations. In addition to the physical affect on humans, the cometary bombardment produced lasting psychological and spiritual changes.Collins traces the wanderings of one group of climactic refugees around the Black Sea and over the Caucasus Mountains to arrive in Asia minor. They leveraged the cultural memories of the people there to establish themselves as a priestly elite with the knowledge of how to appease the wrath of the sky gods. From this position they were able to organize the people to undertake the building of Gobekli Tepe. But this is not just an historical curiosity. The builders of Gobekli Tepe were our progenitors, both culturally and literally. The valleys and hillsides surrounding Gobekli Tepe are where the Neolithic Revolution started. Genetic analysis has traced the ancestors of our modern grains to this very spot.In his evaluation of Gobekli Tepe Collins answers a question that has stymied archaeologists and prehistorians for decades. Why farming? Although you can still find claims that humans took to farming in the face of uncertain food supplies caused by climactic upheaval, this has been proven wrong time and again. Farmers lead a precarious, back-breaking existence, putting in a huge amount of time and labor for a low quality, nutrient poor diet. Farmers face the recurrent threat of crop failure and famine, problems unknown to hunter-gatherers.But farming does produce something that is the hallmark of our modern life - a sedentary culture that supports a non-productive elite characterized by hereditary wealth. Why a free people would willing subjugate themselves to this miserable existence to support a powerful few has puzzled great minds for centuries. Collins has come upon the answer. The subjugation came first; the miserable existence followed.Given his remarkable insights, Collins can be forgiven for the weird bit of how a dream led him to the Garden of Eden. While the Garden of Eden legend certainly ties into this story, Collins could have come up with a less crazy sounding way to explore it.

Gobekli Tepe: Genesis of the Gods was a curious read. This would properly be classified as Fringe Archaeology or Controversial Knowledge. What the author, Andrew Collins, is investigating is the Gobekli Tepe archaeological site in South East Turkey, not far from the border of Syria. What makes the site so startling is not simply the fact that the architecture is monumental, it is that it dates back to the end of Younger Dryas period [a mini Ice Age which lasted for approximately 1,300 years and ended about 12,000 years ago]. What is disturbing about this is that the site throws the theory of the development of civilization [urban culture] into question. The essential theory is that agriculture enabled food surplus which enabled hunter-gatherers to settle down and develop urban culture and all the technologies that went with this. What Tepe suggests is that it wasn’t farming, because Tepe was active before farming emerged, but religion which began the rise of civilization. The site was used for religious and final/death rites ceremonies. Villages were settled nearby to allow the construction of the temple complex and this spurred on the development/domestication of wild grains which encouraged longer stays until the area was permanently settled.Mr. Collins’ book is fascinating and provocative but sometimes tends to push his argument too far. That being said, it is a fascinating read.Rating 4 out of 5 stars.Highly Recommended for those interested in speculative history/archaeology.

For anyone interested in the 'prehistoric' journey of mankind, this is a fascinating account. The descriptions and analysis of Gobekli Tepe are quite thorough and the conclusions drawn seem solid enough - while leave room for further interpretations based on future findings and/or analysis. The author then attempts to connect the dots between extremely ancient myths, place names, migrating groups of ancient peoples, arrowheads, geological events, possible catastrophic meteor or comet hits, etc. While these are intriguing - (and were this a doctoral dissertation, would certainly earn the author his PhD) - there are simply too many loosely connected ties to make this a convincing argument. If any one, two, or three of the links provided is inaccurate (and when dealing with spotty history of such antiquity, it is highly likely that many links are tenuous) the conclusions become null. Nevertheless, I applaud the incredible amount of careful work the author has put into finding as many pieces of the puzzle of 'who we are and where we came from' as possible. [And I especially appreciate that he has done so without making the leap of silly illogic that this journey involved extraterrestrial aliens. . . LOL!] Not every link needs to 'work' or be accurate for this to be a valuable contribution to the discussion, the fact that so much has been laid upon the table is intellectually exhilarating. It gives readers much to consider and could stimulate further thinking and postulation by those with other bits and pieces of information that might refute, correct, or expand upon what is presented here. The text would have been greatly enhanced with the inclusion of MANY more maps of migratory patterns and sites, and I hope in future printings the publishers might consider printing this as an illustrated volume. While there are quite a few illustrations, these are woefully inadequate. Unless the reader is already knowledgeable about the names of every tributary, mountain, plain and place name (ancient and current) of sites across Europe, Asia, and the Mideast, he or she can scarcly follow the author's train of thought without pausing every sentence or so to check a variety of atlases. It is for this reason that I've given four stars rather than 5.

Review

A feast for the eyes and the mind. (People Magazine 2018-10-12)They captured the culture, stirred controversy and even caught an icon in his last hours of life. (Dana Schuster New York Post 2018-10-06)There's something about a great magazine cover that captures the zeitgeist like nothing else can. Industry veteran Ian Birch's new book, Iconic Magazine Covers: The Inside Stories Told by the People Who Made Them, offers a first-hand history of the most impactful ones of all time. (Marie Claire Magazine 2018-11-01)The covers are taken from the 1950s to present day. There are almost 100 covers featured. Each page features a cover of note, offering a nostalgic tour of the world of covers. It makes the book as iconic as the covers it covers. (Shelf Life 2019-02-01)A 250-page compendium of the oral histories behind some of the most groundbreaking and provocative magazine covers of the past 60 years. Birch, an industry veteran and former editorial director of Hearst UK, spent two years conducting over 150 interviews with the art directors, photographers, and editors involved in making the famed covers of "legacy" publications like Esquire and TIME, as well as more obscure titles that made an impact on their cultures before they folded... Birch mourns the print industry as societies become increasingly centered on the internet. In this way, the book is an homage to print. (Aida Amoaka Hyperallergic 2018-12-31)Veteran magazine editor Birch brings together 100 groundbreaking magazine covers from the late 1950s to the present day with commentary from the people who created them. His selections include recognizable covers, such as the wounded Kent State student on the May 15, 1970, cover of Life, Annie Leibowitz's 1981 Rolling Stone cover photo of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and the black-on-black image of the Twin Towers on the post-9/11 New Yorker. He also includes less familiar but equally revolutionary images, such as a 1958 One magazine cover that proclaims "I am glad I am homosexual," and a 2015 double cover--in German and Arabic--for an issue of Germany's ZEIT magazine about the experience of refugees. While the covers are designed to speak for themselves, the accompanying stories from editors, art directors, illustrators, and photographers provide fascinating glimpses into the decisions--and sometimes accidents--that resulted in what Marie Claire editor-in-chief Anne Fulenwider describes in the book's foreword as "a cultural moment distilled to its essence." Recommended for public and academic libraries, especially those supporting journalism and graphic-arts programs. (Lindsay Harmon Booklist 2019-01-18)Perusing newsstands often offers a more insightful look at social and political issues than any textbook. This oral history collects 65-plus memorable magazine covers. (Mahnaz Dar Library Journal 2018-11-01)This is the book true magazine geeks will appreciate most this holiday. Starting in the late 1950s, Birch gave us both a patchwork history of the medium's rare power in post-war America and delicious first-hand accounts of how great visual ideas were generated... This is a deft and deep compendium of provocations from titles large and small. (Steve Smith Folio Magazine 2018-12-04)This story behind the initial brief and creative process to reach the final choice of so many arresting covers forms a record of design and cultural trends over the decades. (Natahalie Atkinson The Globe and Mail, Globe Books 2018 Gift Guide 2018-12-04)With its thick glossy paper and color illustrations, Iconic Magazine Covers: The Inside Stories Told by the People Who Made Them is visually impressive. The content, featuring interviews with the photographers, writers, designers, and editors behind these iconic covers, doesn't disappoint either. The visuals and text combine to make Iconic Magazine Covers a powerful book and a reminder that much like good film and literature, a good magazine cover tells its own story and is impactful ten, 20 -- even 60 years later. (Catherine Ramsdell Pop Matters 2019-01-28)

My 9 year old son had to read this book for one of his summer reads. It was a good book, easy read and understand for an up coming 4th grader.

Just got my first three in this series, and my students have enjoyed all three. This series is similar to the Who Was/Who Is series that brings non-fiction to kids in an inviting way. Great for my fourth grade students.

I discovered this series when looking for books for a 3rd grade teacher who teaches informational text in a urban elementary school. The students loved this series, especially the girls. Very well received by the teacher and students.

As expected

I purchased this for my school library. I had just graduated from high school when the march took place so I was truly amazed at all that happened at this historic time. My students need to read this. This is history I was aware of but didn't really know. Praise for this series and especially this book.

It taught me a lot about the civil rights movement and I enjoyed reading it for battle of the books!

I absolutely love the "Who Was/Is..." and "What Was..." book series. Great for mom and dad to "catch up", too.

I liked it
