Interesting stuff included, although I would have liked some more direct rebuttals. In the middle of the book there is a long speech by a conservative senator laying out his qualms with "Global Warming." The book might have done well to include a direct rebuttal to his claims - this coming from a reviewer who has read precious little on the science, and thus would have liked something closer to a dialogue between the opposing sides. (Yes, I know most of the Scientific Community already agrees, but I don't know enough to tell if a dissenter is full of BS or not, so it'd be nice for the Scientists to respond directly in this volume).

Starts with early scientific recognition that fossil fuel emissions were warming northern Europe over a century ago (and wouldn't that be great, as it was too darn cold, and the growing season too short). McKibben collects key articles through the decades, predicting global warming, documenting (or denying) growing evidence, and vividly recounting impacts of ocean acidification, extreme weather, and other climate changes. A middle section is devoted to efforts to counter anthropogenic damage, from bottom-up individual and community work, to top-down efforts (Rio, Kyoto, Copenhagen...). We hear from young and old, US and international, across cultural and political spectra. This collection shares facts and fiction, fears and frustration, images and hope.Climate and climate science are changing so rapidly that anything in this genre is rapidly rather outdated. Update this reading with the new 2013 IPCC AR5 report - at least the Summary for Policymakers, or the Abstracts by Fire & Water at Evergreen. James Hansen, Elizabeth Kolbert, and other authors in McKibben's collection continue to publish new insights.

This is a great primer on all the issues of global warming from biological to ecological science, with all the world's best environmental scientists included. Bill McKibben has assembled a compendium including many of our top environmental and climate scientists to help the reader understand global warming from every aspect and vantage point of environmental science.

This book is full of examples of how to price different projects. It gives a great idea of the range to charge. As a lettering and watercolor artist, I found that it still didn't have specific prices for certain projects that I was looking for, but am glad I bought it. The sample contracts in the back of the book were worth the price for me. I've already used and adapted the licensing contract for several projects.

I am a recent graduate from art school and unfortunately, since I received a B.S. in Visual Arts and not a BFA, I was not taught the ins and outs of marketing my own art, what to charge, and why. This book is an incredible and extensive reference book for literally ANY type of artist, down to the subject matter you are creating. Would recommend 100%, especially as the up to date version.

I am using this book now for teaching a professional practices course. It has so much information on the marketing/business aspects of being a graphic designer. How to "think" for a graphic design business.I started out my business using a very early edition of this book. And this was very helpful. The new edition has updated price guides for more areas and very helpful advice.

I would call this a key part of success as a creative. It's more than a pricing guide, there's a wealth of information about conducting business as a graphic consultant / illistrator / web designer and so much more. My teacher recommended it when I was wrapping up my BFA and I made myself wait for this new edition and I am so happy with it. My brother is also a graphic designer so we pass it back and forth when we dont know how to proceed.

It might be a great resource. Maybe. But the printer got the pages scrambled. There's a chunk of about a hundred pages of really core information that's entirely missing. In its place is a repetition of a different series of pages that end up in the book twice. Of course, the table of contents says the info that was my whole reason for buying the book was in the missing section. I've requested a replacement from Amazon, but I'm not optimistic that I won't just get another identical defective copy.UPDATEThe replacement from Amazon arrived quickly, and its pages are complete and in-order. Where my rating had formerly been one star, I'm adjusting it up to four, only subtracting one for the chaos.

This book is a wealth of knowledge. Well worth the buy.

Great info but my book is misprinted. Between page 176 and 209 I have another copy of chapter 2. Ordered a replacement and it’s the same issue. Returning both.

An interesting work. . . . It speaks of how conditions can be changed and perhaps improved by "nudging" people. Rather than "beating up" on people, subtly nudge them. Fascinating reading and very provocative. Is nudging good? Or manipulative?The authors, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, faculty at the University of Chicago, define a "nudge" as (Page 6): ". . .any aspect of the choice architecture that alters people's behavior in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic incentives." Indeed, they define their perspective as "libertarian paternalism." They believe in freedom but also wish to use "nudges" to induce people to improve their health, and live longer and happier.One simple example? Has any male ever used a urinal with a fly painted onto it? This simple nudge reduces "spillage" by 40% as males involuntarily try to hit the "target." In the process, there is a benefit, less smelliness and messiness in the restroom.The book applies the nudge argument to investments, health, school choice, organ donation, the environment, marriage, and so on. In each case, they try to show how nudges and libertarian paternalism can improve the quality of life of individuals as well as providing social benefits.Questions do arise, as the authors themselves admit. Is this a manipulative approach? Do we subtly manipulate people into doing things that they might not voluntarily wish to do? Thaler and Sunstein address these issues. Each reader will have to determine how well they succeed. A provocative and fascinating work, well worth reading.

The point is very clear. We all have preconditioned manners of making decisions and instead of having to choose from thousands of options it makes more sense to nudge us to a more common ground than to leave us confused and frustrated. This of course is on condition that there is pure transparency of all the options. If you have ever read any books about psychology or studied the subject or have read Daniel Kahneman’s book Thinking Fast and Slow, than this book will not provide you a lot of new insight. It looks at a lot of old and some recent researches about how people who think they’re making rational decisions are in reality not and have pretty predictable decision patterns. The book then goes on to recommend how society could be better if we followed some type of Paternal Libertarianism where the ones providing choses like Insurance companies or government services nudge persons to make smarter decisions while being transparent of all the options and not hiding any of them. I agree with them almost 100%. Most of their suggestions and examples make sense as long as the ones nudging are 100% transparent. If you’re anything like me, you will say the book is just okay and you will not be blown away by any Wow moments. So you can either read the book or save time and just speak to someone who read the book and have a nice long discussion with them.

Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard H. Thaler and‎ Cass R. Sunstein has a simple premise. Unlike classical economic theory, where people are fully rational and always do things in their best interest, we are really lazy, uninformed, and unmotivated. We make bad decision because we lack information, or space out, or are too stupid to investigate what descisions will make our lives better.Intuitively, this view appeals to me. One example: create online retirement forms with a default setting which generally benefit employees, rather than no setting at all. Most people don't really understand their retirement plans, if they even have one. So make their laziness work for them.Of course, the “Libertarian Paternalism” proposed in this work is problematic. Who makes the choices that we get to choose from? Can’t "they" rig the system for their benefit and not ours?Despite this, I think the author’s view of human nature is sound, and can lead to more intelligent discussions about what we, as a species and individuals in that species, can hope to accomplish.

Built on the earlier work founding Behavioral Economics by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tvarsky which de-throned the "Rational Actor" model of humans in Classical Economics, Kahneman and Tvarsky, joined by Paul Slovic, showed human thinking is hard-wired in evolution, beset by Heuristics and Biases which are provably non-rational. They answer the question often provoked by observations of others clearly acting against their self-interest. There has been 35 years of continuing research in this area, a Nöbel for Kahneman, even showing that Capuchin monkeys are hard-wired native economic thinkers and choosers. We act, as evolution indicates, for action in the short term, primarily in the lower level, fast thinking brain and with heuristics/algorithms sufficient to meet the test of "Probably Approximately Correct", with book of this name by Leslie Valiant. Humans are not randomly irrational, but predictably irrational, which is what makes The Nudge work effectively.Thaler gives us an alternative to formal control systems for humans based on rules, laws, behavioral/operant conditioning, "shoulds, oughts, musts". Humans ignore or rebel against the rules, and deny consequences for short term gains.Thaler's "Nudge" is the alternative, assuming people will act in their self-interest without depending or using rationality or reason. Thaler shows in his reserach and presents in his book how to shape choice using the newly discovered laws of predictable irrationality, or choice shaping.

Michiko Kakutani, in her book, The Death of Truth, present a realistic view of today's society and its dubious relationship to "true-truth." She shows how we are living in a postmodern era in which there is no such thing as public-objective truth—it is all relative—alternative facts. More specifically, Kakutani shows how relative truth has permeated the culture of our politics as embodied in our 45th President, Donald J. Trump. Why he, and many others, do not anchor reality in the objective truth is clearly brought out in her book. She describes that with alternative facts comes alternative realities. With this, Kakutani give the reader a clear explanation as to why, in particular, Trump and those close to him speak and behave the way they do. Since relative truth is so pervasive, she leave the reader with little hope for a quick change in the public's view of truth.

Excellent short book on our loss of critical thinking skills and how we are being manipulated through social media. Lots of references to other works. Turn off the TV, kill your Facebook and twitter accounts and read objective journalism.

I agree that the book sometimes seems like a lot of quotes strung together and it is short. But they are brilliant quotes, the organization of the quotes creates a compelling and credible argument, and I love the fact that it is concise and not bloated by an author's ego. And relative affordable. A book for people who like books but don't have time to slog through 500pp. and want a clear take on our times before future historians get to it - should we survive.the moment Kakutani elucidates.

As political discourse in the United States becomes increasingly subsumed by ideology and divorced from both soundness and consensus, Michiko Kakutani provides an analysis of how we got here and provides tentative suggestions on a way out. This is not an optimistic book, but these are not times that give much cause for optimism.

The Death of Truth is a powerful, defiantly written defense of the modern liberal worldview. It is written in opposition to what Kakutani perceives as the malevolent outlook spread by the current administration, particularly its leader.The world Kakutani argues for has deep roots. Going back to the founders, she sees the pillars of democratic society as trust in reason, dialogue with opponents and a sense of national purpose which overrides more parochial considerations.She then sees Trump as promoting a society distrustful of science—the archetype of objective truth—as well as distrustful of the mainstream media and traditional democratic institutions. In its place is a watered-down version of postmodernism: there are only competing narratives and alternative truths. Experts, scientific or not, all have a hidden agenda. There is no way to communicate with opponents—only struggles for power.Kakutani builds this contrast by, ironically enough, constructing her own narrative. Most of the reasons for the debacle she sees in Trump have been expressed by others: news feeds which provide only one perspective, deliberate disinformation campaigns sponsored by Russia and gerrymandering of congressional districts leading to more partisanship.But, I emphasize, while well-sourced, it’s interesting that Kakutani doesn’t support her case with much data. The book is instead a mesh of cultural history, literary theory and philosophy. The narrative will then tend to either resonate or fail to resonate with readers. It cannot be tested like a scientific hypothesis.In addition, Kakutani tends to see all disavowal of truth as stemming from Trump and the Republicans. Didn’t one of Obama’s closest advisors say that Obamacare was sold based on the stupidity of the American people?Even so, to so tersely compose a thesis of such obvious importance is quite an accomplishment. I only wish that Kakutani’s vision of a civilized debate between the right and left within America at large would apply to her own book. It certainly deserves to be read and given thoughtful consideration.

This is a fast read, and a highly engaging and fascinating look at what's happening in our world, with apt historical comparisons. Everything is well researched, and backed up by credible sources. Everyone should read this.

I didn't catch the subtitle on first glance, so as I started reading I was surprised to discover that that the underlying theme read like a screed against Trump's tweets. However, after finishing the book and accounting for that (even putting that aside), the author makes some excellent and relevant points that are able to stand on their own, even without the torrent of alt-facts issuing forth unchecked from the Trump administration.

Sara J. Kadolph is a retired professor emeritus of Apparel, Merchandising, and Design at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she taught for 30 years. She taught several courses related to textiles: chemistry, dyeing, quality assurance, and conservation. Dr. Kadolph is the recipient of numerous teaching, advising, and professional awards including teaching excellence awards from the International Textiles and Apparel Association, Iowa State University, and the Iowa Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She was the inaugural holder of the Donna R. Danielson Professorship in Textiles and Clothing. She is a Fellow of the International Textiles and Apparel Association and a Wakonse Fellow.   Dr. Kadolph has consulted with companies in the textile complex to solve quality problems, educate product development/design teams, select materials, assess textile performance, write specifications, and develop quality assurance programs. Her teaching and research scholarship has been published in the Clothing and Textiles Research Journal, the Journal of the Society of International Natural Dyeing, the Journal of the Korean Society for Clothing Industry, The Journal of Consumer Education, the Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, the International Journal of Clothing and Science Technology, and others. Her Textiles book with Pearson Education is used in colleges and universities throughout the world.     Sara B. Marcketti is an Associate Professor in the Apparel, Merchandising, and Design Program and Associate Director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching at Iowa State University. I purchased the Essentials of Textiles before I found this version from a co-worker during a presentation. This updated edition of the same and expanded information is wonderful! A great purchase for anyone wanting more details about textiles and what things are made of and how they're made.
