I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes just six months ago. It came as a shock and I did not want to believe it. My doctor told me to pay attention to glycemic load. Because I knew nothing about it I decided to study up before actually trying it, so I kept eating what I thought was a relatively good diet for diabetics. But I had a hard time understanding why my numbers were good one day, even though I thought I was creating, and not so good the next. After reading this book I now understand that I was accidentally doing the right thing by cutting out starch. But this book has provided me with so much information that I feel like for the first time I'm on the right path to losing weight and controlling my diabetes. And now that I understand how my medication works and why, I no longer fight my doctor about taking it. Thank you for finally having the answer.

After purchasing other Glycemic Index diet books, this is the author - and books - I went with. Of several books by Rob Thompson, I feel this one is the best.The Glycemic Load approach make more logical sense to me over Glycemic Index. Plus this book teaches you how to block blood glucose spikes by eating starch (sugar) "blockers" before I eating a portion of sweet potato.This is so easy it shouldn't be called a diet. No hunger cravings.I've drop 12.5 lbs in last 6 weeks by eliminating fruit juices (but NOT raw fruit) and minimizing starch. - I've gone from a 28 BMI to a 26 BMI but my actual goal is a waist-to-height ratio below 50%. I'm using bone broth as a bone/ joint medication which helps with diet total calorie count. In fact, I may have to actually over-eat if trend continues because weight loss is too rapid and I risk losing muscle.

I've read lots of these kinds of books and this is one of my favorites. This book is for people dedicated to changing their health, but are just starting their education in what to do. It goes the extra mile with advice and tools for newly interested folks. Its also for those people that have tried and failed all the extreme diets eliminating all fats or carbs or completely labeling this good or bad. If you want to come back to earth I recommend this book. The title makes you think this is another stupid diet book, but really its just some good education, advice and techniques from a medical professional that has a personnal connection with the topic. I quickly think of my friends that dont know much about how to eat healthy and how this book could get them on the right path with methods that dont require a mentally derranging complete elimination of one macro nutrient or another. This is not an extreme diet, rather informative in layman's terms that excessive insulin due to high glycimic diets is a key factor in our modern health crisis. This author quickly and efficently conveys his message and im glad to report you dont need to eat a ketogenic diet to experience the effects of lower insulin on your fat storage, appatite, sleep and many other things. It's a great book for people that have come to realize that no carb is not sustainable, but believe in the basic premise of no junk carbs and less carbs. In a nut shell, by choosing your carbs based on glycimic load and using a few tricks when you occasionally eat a higher glicemic meal you can make a real difference. Having read this theory in other books, i do feel his advice refined my understanding of what to look out for and ulrimately how to know if his guidance is working for you. While the premis of the book is sugar blocking to to reduce insulin production, his message of what large amounts of easily digestible starch do to your health via metabolic syndrome has compelled me to eat very small portions or none at all. When my dedication wavers there are the sugar blocking techiqued, but im pretty happy with the low glycimic fruits and berries or a brisk walk after a moderate glycimic food. If you try to use his advice while continuing to eat terribly, I doubt it will transform your life, but may help.

I am a bread lover, so when my doctor said my HA1C number was 5.7 and my fasting blood sugar was 108, I took notice and bought this book. That was about 6 months ago. My total cholesterol was 211, which isn't THAT bad. My triglicerides were 135 and LDLC was 122. Ouch! Thankfully, my HDLC was 62. Anyway, I started following some of the suggestions that I read in this book and last week I had blood work again. My HA1C is now 5.5 which is normal. My fasting blood sugar was 82. 3 months ago, my fasting blood sugar was 96. So the trend has been downward. My total cholesterol from my latest blood work is 171, with triglicerides at 67, LDLC at 97, and HDLC at 61. I am very happy that these dietary changes appear to really work. I have been eating more salads, particularly at lunch. Also, I have cut way back on breads and only eat some after I have eaten some protein. Amazingly, I am not bread starved either. I have even lost a couple pounds, but I am not overweight anyway. I highly recommend this book. Easy to read, entertaining and it works!

truly a miracle book for my husband that has been diagnosed with type II diabetes.!!!! TRULY a MIRACLE because my husband is able to follow the advice easily and happily. I read reviews and take most with a grain of salt BUT this time, I have to post because we are so happy we have this man's advice!!! We put the first tips into practice and my husband saw an IMMEDIATE difference in his blood sugar readings. His doctor had him on 1500 mg of metformin AND an additional medicine called onglyza. This drove me nuts. I have my own feelings that being on all of these meds but not tweaking your diet properly makes your body dependent on the meds...causing you to take more and more and eventually be on insulin. My sister recommended the book for weight loss but I started reading it for my husband. He is now OFF of Onglyza and down to 1000 mg of metformin......when he shows his numbers to the doctor, he may be able to reduce further. This book is for EVERYONE..I am having my 17 year old son take heed and he, too, is happy to follow the advice and diet recommendations. He doesn't want to end up hurting his body with too much sugar.

I was compelled to stop and write a quick review even though I am only 6 pages into the book. I may amend this later, but I just have to say, I have been studying Six Sigma for 4 months preparing for my green belt test, and I'm really struggling to understand the statistics concepts. This is very sad, because I actually did great in my college statistics class.Back to the book; I am 6 pages into this book and I FINALLY get an explanation of Process Sigma Level that makes perfect sense. For me, it is really hard to understand how to do something if I don't know the "why" behind it. I finally got that today.I actually have hope I might pass this test now. Thank you, Warren Brussee.

As a Lean Practitioner I find the Six Sigma sometimes quite overwhelming and extensive. But here you have a book, that talks from the horses mouth, from a guy who has been in the trenches and used Six Sigma as it is is supposed to. You don't need fancy statistical programs - just you common sense and an Excel spreadsheet. I will definitely begin using Six Sigma tools more in my projects without bothering everybody else to understand the tools. I defintely recommend this book - you'll find it applicable right away I think.

I gave it four stars because we used this as the required text for our last batch of business process green belts. The technical level was just about right for that group. I would not recomend it for black belts who will be doing more technical manufactucturing / quality/ product performance / design projects. I would rate it one or two stars for that. You could use for more technical black belts but I think you would want to follow up with a text that goes deeper into more complex statistical and logical tools.

Simplified, actionable ways to look at processes and data. Intro to when and how to use certain tools. Reviews calculations and terminology. I have a cssgb primer. I'd read this then I'd be able to follow those sections of the primer.

Interesting and very useful

Like the title says "Made Easy" and easy it is.

I recently made the financial plunge and bought Adobe's Production Studio Premium which includes After Effects 7.0 - a motion graphics and compositing program I feel necessary for any serious production company. Though quite good at Premiere Pro, and decent at Photoshop and 3ds Max, I did not know how to use After Effects at all so I bought a couple books to try to learn - this being one of them.At first glance the lesson projects appear un-impressive, particularly if only looking at the pictures in the book. However, as you work through them and watch the finished videos you realize that you are learning valuable techniques and skills that you can apply to your own work. They have you import and work with photoshop, illustrator, and video files (included on DVD) so you get used to working with a variety of media just like in a production environment. The book really helps you step by step learn to work with this program in a variety of ways and is exactly what a new AE user needs.It covers quite a bit of stuff including things new to version 7.It's well worth the money and I recommend it to anyone who needs help getting started with this program.I guess my only complaint was that it didn't do a lesson on some of the motion graphics like I see on national network commercials (loopy, ribbon, bubbly graphics) they always fling onto the screen, but to be fair this program can do so very much there's probably no way to have a book so inclusive that it goes from the very beginning to that level all in a single book. Also, the .mp3 file that you are supposed to use with the lesson 1 project will not import into my After Effects without crashing it.

Actually this is about what I expected from Adobe. It's a basic instruction book for After Effects 7 that shows a beginner some of the mechanics of the program. The lessons pull the reader through the steps needed to produce the required results without much explanation.As another reviewer noted, the examples aren't that good. Watching the sample movies before doing the lessons, you find yourself saying "And why would I want to produce something like that?" Or maybe "It takes over an hour just for that 10 second cheezy cartoon?"After Effects is an extremely powerful program that's used by many professionals in countless video applications. Watch any TV program and you'll surely see the results of what After Effects can do. Much additional instruction beyond this official training book from Adobe, that you have to pay extra for, is obviously required to get the most out of After Effects.I just got 2 more books,"After Effects" by Fahs & Weinman and "Creative After Effects" by Taylor. I'll see how they compare with Adobe's book.Update: After reading "Creative After Effects" by Angie Taylor, this Adobe Classroom in a Book looks like a Pulitzer prize winner in comparison. Don't even think about wasting your time on Taylor's so-called "book".

In all fairness, I've only gone through the first lesson and already I'm enraged at Adobe. You're given several files to import from the accompanying DVD, and one of them is 3 seconds long. The book refers to it as 3 seconds long. Strugle struggle struggle and you can't make it work like the sample movie. Now I open up the adobe finished example and lo and behold, the file is supposed to be THIRTY seconds long. I have a little experience and was able to create a new file of approriate length but real beginners will tear their hair out over something like this. Problem 2- a supplied mp3 file won't load (though all my other mp3 files will). Had to convert it to wav to import it. These kinds of defects just shouldn't happen in a teach your-self environment.Bottom line is at least the first lesson is not a lesson in how to use After Effects 7 but how to get totally frustrated. Can't wait to see lesson 2. If you are looking for a smooth, easy way to learn After Effects 7, look elsewhere.

The exercises in this book are extremely practical, and fantastic for showing a beginner how to begin to do some powerful things with After Effects in a hands on approach. For that the book is excellent. I do also like the appropriate amount of repetition and clear screen shots as well as references to shortcuts. The lessons are well written and concise.The two main drawbacks in my opinion, are:1 - The content of the examples is very mediocre. It would be much more exciting to do a network packaging rather then "Channel 5 News" over a still image.2 - The book assumes you will be using Adobe Bridge for many aspects, which isn't necessarily always the case.Overall a very thorough beginners guide to After Effects, that should get anyone doing basic production work or making art right away.

I opened this book with 2 years experience in Final Cut Pro, Motion and just a cursory intro to After Effects so I can't speak to how a beginner would experience it. However, I have found that doing the hands-on tutorial has upped my skills in the program vastly. Last night I was able to begin a 3d project of a scope I could not have imagined doing a year ago. It is not the end-all be-all because no one book could cover all the nuances in a powerful program such as After Effects. But, that said, if you do the lessons, it will push your skills forward and that's what it's all about, right?

Very highly recommend this book. Its dry and not a lot of fun, but gives you a set of tools you can really use when learning the program.

good, basic intro to a professional tool. while it might not "be for beginners" as some have said, neither is after effects. the one problem i have with the book is that several of the lessons require effects that only come bundled with the Pro edition of AE7. given that the title of the book does not mention Pro, the authors should probably have taken more care to avoid using features limited to the Pro edition.

This had helped me hone my skills after my class was over. I needed to freshen up on after effects and this book helped me out a lot. Will buy from you again. Thanks.

Cornwell does a great job of not only setting the strategic and operational stage, helping us understand Wellington, Blucher, and Napoleon, but also weaving in personal anecdotes of the soldiers who fought and died on the battlefield.Waterloo, as can be imagined in a battle its size, was confusing. Many accounts contradict each other or, at least, can't agree on the timing and sequence of events. Cornwell addresses many of the key disconnects and lays out what he believed happened all while telling a story. When it's done you can begin to feel how the battle flowed, not in neat phases but as a series of often overlapping events played out over the battlefield. In this the storyteller comes to the fore because he's able to weave together a variety of multiple events, perspectives, and people in such a way that you see the whole and not the part. It's not just a story of the British or Prussian or French armies, or the common soldier, or the three great leaders. In the end it's a story about how that all came together. In this Cornwell was able to rely on the original work of historians - Cornwell's strength in this book is not original research, there's nothing new historically, but what makes his book worth reading is the way he painlessly tells the tale in a very understandable manner.If I had one complaint, and it's a relatively small one, it's that he switches between the past and present tenses in his writing, sometimes within the same paragraph. I think he periodically switched to the present tense to try to increase the immediacy of what he was describing, but, for me, it tended to interrupt the moment; rather than staying caught up in the story, it reminded me I was reading a book.If you're familiar with some of the post-war finger-pointing among the allies you'll understand, after reading the book, Cornwell's conclusion that, "The battle of Waterloo was an allied victory. That was how it was planned and that was how it turned out. Wellington would never have made his stand if he thought for one moment that the Prussians would not let him down. Blucher would never have marched if he thought Wellington would cut and run."This is one of those books that I still recommend even if you're familiar with Waterloo. Cornwell's ability to tell a story really pulls together the historical elements in a way that allows understanding.

As someone who does not know much of Wellington, Napoleon, or Europe in the 1800s, "Waterloo" was a complete introduction to me of one of the greatest battles of all time. And Bernard Cornwell's account is magnificent.This book was enjoyable to read. It flowed well from beginning to end. Descriptions of the battle were detailed, colorful, and gory (it is war, what do you expect?). Cornwell captures the readers imagination. He also includes many quotations and first person accounts--giving a true sense of what it was like to be there. Brilliant paintings and maps fill the pages giving the reader much to visualize the battle as it is laid out before him (this was a hard copy). I find it difficult to visualize battle movements when solely based on textual descriptions, so the detailed and vibrant maps vastly contributed to my reading experience.What I appreciate most of Cornwell may not even be his story telling prose--but how accessible his information is. The most clueless Waterloo amateur (like myself) will not be left in the dark long. Cornwell's writing will bring anyone up to speed on the basics of Napoleonic warfare: What is a column? What is a square? What is a line? And what are the advantages of each formation? Why would people march in massive columns in the open and willingly shoot each other? He describes what affect the musket, the cannon, and the horse had on 1800s tactics. He spends much paper discussing the leaders: Wellington, Napoleon, Blucher, Ney. Anyone can read this and very quickly understand the times, the tactics, and the battle itself.I learned much of Napoleon and his arrogance which I believe came back to bite him. He believed that he was near invincible, attacking two armies that together almost doubled his own strength. He delegated much power to his Marshalls (why?!) who time and time again broke clear rules of engagement. Wellington in contrast was very much involved in the battle--his calm and steady countenance exuded confidence. His troops took heart in brilliant displays of courage and (spoiler alert) withstood to win the day. The Prussian General Blucher's persistence after getting whipped earlier also contributed to the eventual defeat of The Emperor. There is much strength in unity.If I was picky I would wish that Cornwell would have summarized key events a little more. Instead of simply describing the facts and giving quick real time analysis, I would have appreciated Cornwell to have stepped back from the battle to elaborate on the significance of each moment more frequently. Part of me is left wondering--actually how important was the holding of Hougemont or how important was the charge of the Royal Scott Greys in the overall picture of the battle? Cornwell does well to say that understanding Waterloo is near impossible as war (and this battle in particular) is chaos. There are many contradictory accounts over what happened and where it happened and when it happened. Even so, I feel that he could have summarized the key events more.But that is a small thing in the big picture as all in all I found this book masterful. Before I read this I had no understanding of the people and events of Waterloo, and now I know more than most. That is why I read books! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning history and events that have shaped our world. Enjoy.

As a US History major I never studied the European wars in much detail. When doing work in Europe drove by the battlefield, but since I was late for a meeting just paused. A small area, sloping hills. Did not realize how much I missed until reading this book. Not only is it about the battle, but also how Napoleon returned from exile, the alliances in 1815. and the effects of this battle on the peace of Europe for many years.The explanations of how the various units operated finally gave me a good understanding of the way war was found in the early 1800's and carried forward in our War Between the States. Squares, lines, Calvary charges, lancers, and type of artillery have new meaning to me after reading the book. Although knowing the final outcome, Cornwell is able to keep the suspense of how it happened. Such a large number of men and horses in a small area, close fighting, hand to hand, and personal accounts of death and wounding, and of loss and victory provide a sober view of the wars of the era.

This item arrived with a broken leg and chips knocked off it so you could see the white resin underneath. I am not returning it since that would be more trouble than it is worth. I colored the white spots with a sharpie. That being said I do like the little thing and if it is not handled too much you can't tell the leg is broken. I don't consider it a bargain when an item arrives needing fixing.

Way too simple. Can't even see the 3rd eye. Not worth more than $5 IMO. Still nice if you are a collector though.

Terribly disappointing. The third eye is nothing more than a little bump and is not recognizable as an eye. Does not compare to TV image.

Not much help for those staying exclusively in Estes Park and visiting Rocky Mountain National Park. What little info there was about Estes Park wasn't all that much help. I did find a couple resturants that I hadn't seen in other sources but that was it.

A wonderful book for anyone living in or visiting Boulder, CO. No matter what your interests may be, you will find information in this book. I highly recommend it.

There are only 2 maps and no photos at all. Yes, there are lots of listings and it includes web sites, but it's just that--listings and more listings. It's just not as compelling or interesting as other guides out there.One thing I dislike is the typography: the text is so fine and faint that it can be difficult to read. Were they trying to save on ink costs? It's funny that they actually credit the book designer! She should be fired. I also saw the guide to Denver. Same comments go for that book, though this one is a bit better, thus 3 stars.

THE INSIDERS' GUIDE TO BOULDER AND ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, 9TH EDITION is a great book about the city of Boulder, its suburbs, and Rocky Mountain National Park. The "Relocation" section shows both the city of Boulder and its suburbs to be both wealthier and more socially and politically liberal than Denver and its environs, and can steer you to areas where, if you blast music by singers who don't have perfect skin, you won't get busted, a problem which is common in some of Denver's suburbs. It also shows that Boulder and its environs are willing to vote for a female political candidate with problem skin, which people in the suburbs of Denver generally don't do, unless the candidate is pro-gun. Overall, this book shows Boulder to be to the left of Denver, especially in its tolerance of different cultures, so the "Dining" and "Nightlife" sections are also incredible, as is the section on Rocky Mountain National Park, which warns you that speech patterns such as perseveration and repetitive questions will likely draw wolves and wildcats towards you, as well as describing the natural beauty of the park. Overall, this book is a comprehensive guide to Boulder, its suburbs, and Rocky Mountain National Park.
