I was less than impressed with this book. Little explanation for alot of the concepts. The explanations seem very all over the place and out of order. Also (and this is 100% opinion) alot of the way he programmed seemed to go counter to the "best practices" I've been reading about.

This is one of the rare technical books, that's actually quite fun to read. Additionally, all except the last two chapters can be read out of turn. I think this is an excellent book. Take the time and get excited by taking a fresh look at ruby.

The past few years have seen the English-language Ruby book market explode. Before the phenomenal success of Rails it was perfectly possible to own every available title (and not use much storage space), but now that would be quite a challenge and lead to considerable redundancy. Having worked my way through quite a few Rails books of late, reading Practical Ruby Projects--a Ruby book that doesn't even mention web frameworks--was both a pleasant diversion and a highly illuminating experience.Like the last volume I reviewed (Pro JavaScript Design Patterns), this book is unabashedly aimed at experienced programmers. There's a brief paragraph on "getting set up", but no detailed guide to obtaining the tools. Instead we dive right in to a sequence of projects that includes: making music (dipping into calling C code from ruby), animation, simulation, building a strategy game (and adding a RubyCocoa frontend), genetic algorithms, and even implementing lisp and parsers. Once again the "apress roadmap," a diagram intended to show how the skillsets in their different volumes build on one another, is misleading pitching this between "Beginning Ruby" and other volumes I've reviewed like Practical Ruby for System Administration and Pro Active Record. Don't believe it. Though there's little overlap in the material, this is a more advanced volume than either of those and readers should be prepared.The pace of the book is measured and Topher Cyll does a good job of gradually building up the projects a step at a time. Along the way a variety of practices are demonstrated with many methods stubbed out for demonstration purposes before being filled in when they are needed, and considerable time spent on decoupling code. That latter piece is particularly in evidence in the chapters on building a turn-based strategy game and then developing a RubyCocoa front-end. Despite careful design early on further refactoring is needed to make it easy to apply the front-end and that process is carefully worked through.Most of the book makes some use of existing libraries. The initial lisp chapter uses the sexp library and the subsequent section on writing a parse relies on rparsec. For the most part, however, use of the libraries is kept to a minimum, allowing for fairly self-contained code. Unit testing is largely ignored until the last chapter, where the need for tests when constructing a grammar/parser is explained and a test-first development model is encouraged. That works well to demonstrate the power of tests for complex (and often brittle) code.This is not a book designed for public transport reading. Working through chapters on the bus I frequently found myself wanting to reach for my laptop to get a better grasp of how a piece of code worked. While the explanation is generally very good, with material of this complexity there is nothing like running the code and tweaking it to make sure you've understood exactly what each transformation does. It's a book to take your time over, so be prepared!A few editorial errors have crept in, suggesting a re-organisation of the contents late in the day. In particular an early reference to s-expressions seemed to presume that the lisp and/or parsing chapters were featured early. That's not a big deal and will hopefully be corrected in later printings; the author does encourage skipping around within the book, but there is value in working through it roughly in order, and not just for the two "paired" chapters that explicitly build on one another.Perhaps the most striking thing about this book is the reminder that even for those of us whose primary programming activity is web development, studying other areas can be extremely helpful. Not only is it helpful to see how other developers structure their code, but tools like genetic algorithms and parsers are likely to be very helpful where web applications require sophisticated processing and/or backend systems. And it never hurts to learn a little lisp. For the ruby developer who's comfortable with the language and wants to stretch out a little, this book would be an excellent investment.Disclaimer: I was sent a copy of this book for review by the publisher.

This is a great ruby book for those new to the language, or for those who already know a good deal of ruby but wouldn't mind learning how to do some cool quirky things with ruby, like programmatically compose and play midi. This book will not walk you through how to use ruby if you are new to the language -- but their are plenty of other books (and online references) that can do the real introductory teaching. Working through some of the projects in this book *will* help you really get comfortable with ruby, by putting it to practice in non-boilerplate ways.If you have more experience with Ruby, this book is still compelling. It walks through some nonstandard projects -- interesting projects on their own, and certainly the sort of projects that will get your mind working, and have you looking at the problem and the language in a new light.Throughout, care is taken with the writing -- the text isn't a boring technical manual, but is compelling and interesting, while packing in a lot of technical detail!

Most Ruby books milk newbies jumping on the bandwagon for cash. This is a book for experienced Ruby programmers who want to be awesome Ruby programmers. The book of the book is all about parsing and shows you how to implement Lisp in Ruby; the first project is a compact, simple, powerful system for creating music in real time in Ruby. I'm using it to drive Propellerhead Reason from the command line and I'm on page 25. This is an absolutely excellent book. The best Ruby book I've seen in years. The only Ruby book I'd recommend to experts. This is the bomb book.

The hands-on style of this book is contagious; you'll find yourself really wanting to jump in and try out the code samples. The source is available on Topher's site, but the simplicity and sense of immediacy are such that you may want to just start typing it in yourself. In a few minutes, you're making music or creating a game.

I got this from the library out of curiosity. I read maybe 20 pages and skimmed the rest. I'd have read more, but it was unreadable.Hundreds of pages of imaginary concepts with absolutely nothing to tether them to reality or science.The lies start on the the cover, which refers to the subject as a science. If it's science, where are the studies? Where are the peer-reviewed journal articles? The replication studios? Heck, any studies at all? The statistics, the control groups, anything?Hubbard repeatedly refers to studies in this book, but there are no footnotes to studies, no bibliography, no data another that a couple of silly charts.There are a few ridiculous equations with nothing to back them. Hubbard doesn't even claim that he personally did experiments or name anyone who did studies, he just writes "The studies conclusively showed" and loves the passive voice "... was shown by studies ..." This isn't science, it's just hand waving and not even particularly good hand waving. It's full of made-up concepts like "engrams" with no evidence to back them. In addition to the overwhelming about of nonsense, at times he makes flat-out false statements. (The book claims that the mind records things perfectly and that all experiences can be recalled, or relived, with perfect fidelity. Um, no, memory is quite fragile and changes over time as memories are recalled and laid back down.)The book wasn't even good for more than a couple of laughs. It depresses me to think that this was a best-seller and people thought it was useful as self-help or -- gulp -- science, since it's so obviously a complete fiction from cover to cover.

Pure ridiculousness. I had to read this for a class, I now know for certain the professor is a secret Scientologist. Makes a fantastic doorstop though.

I don't like the presence of this book in my room. hahaha, was recommended by somebody, now I realized it's a test hahahahaha!

This book is terribly written. It is pure fiction pretending to be science. Sad to know that so many have been fooled into joining a cult and throwing their lives away over the author and his creative imagination.

Great informational book that I got mostly for recipes, but it has a wealth of why consider eating healthy. You wouldn't be looking at this type book unless you are interested in a healthy body that stays that way. This explains purchased prepared foods vs foods cooked at home vs fresh uncooked foods and their relative nutritional value...astonishing what you get in freshly consumed, uncooked foods. Whether juicing or blending, there is so much more nutrition in fresh foods with the fiber.I highly recommend this, along with "Eat to Live", "Forks over Knives", and "The China Study". After seeing the background and history in our foods, I doubt you will ever go back to good ol' restaurant foods.

Bought as a gift for someone getting into juicing. Not only does it have recipes but it also gives useful information about what each ingredient is doing for the body. Very informative and thorough.

This book gives tons of information about fruits and vegetables individually so that their components can be immediately looked up. Also, it gets into the how and why of juicing. I have been studying diet and nutrition for more than a decade, and this book is definitely among the short list I'd recommend anyone who cares about drastically improving their lives. I bought a book on juicing not a book on nutrition so I don't want to hear about how I should be vegan for optimal health. I've done and still do lots of reading about nutrition from other sources and was looking for a book purely on juicing. Plus, I really don't think that a vegan diet is the best diet, at least not for everyone. My other problem with the section on weight loss was the authors restrictive diet and use of the weight loss pill HE INVENTED. Yes, in a juicing book the author tries to sell you his weight loss pill. I was disappointed that the author expected the dieter to become vegan, or mostly vegan, and restrict calories as part of a sustainable lifestyle change for weight loss. Simply adding juicing to your daily routine is probably the best thing you can do as a lifestyle change that is sustainable and will encourage weight loss. The author, in my opinion, dropped the ball here. When you start juicing your body naturally starts increasing energy and metabolism, you stop craving all those things that are bad for you, and the weight starts to come off easily. Some people may need more but diet pills should not be your first go to when you start juicing to loose weight.Overall the book is really good and I would recommend it, I just didn't like the part on diet/dieting.

I've learn from this book almost done reading it/ its short but jam packed the cover promotes the idea of juicing with all those colorful fruits and vegetables. in short juice if you dont have time to eat so many foods. juice a lot of dif veggies to get many dif nutirents in your body and juice because it absorbs better. specially if you dont have great dental health

Excellent book and I use it often for reference and juice recipes. It only has 70 delicious recipes but this book has much more than that. It talks about individual fruits and vegetables, what they are good for, their nutrients, how to prepare them and then it goes into the recipes. A wealth of information in an easy to read and understand format. Highly recommended if you want to start juicing.

We Love stink books

My 7-year-old daughter, who is a strong reader, loved this book. It has a nice combination of pictures and text. It is an entertaining read for the early chapter reader set. Its lexile is in the 500's, so it's not for a beginner reader, but for judy and stink fans, the vacation/treasure hunt setting is a nice departure from the usual home/school setting.

I really enjoyed reading this story to my daughter. She loves the Judy Moody movie & was extremely excited to hear a story about a Judy & Stink adventure. We had quite a few laughs while reading this book. This was the first of many Judy Moody books I will purchase & I can't wait for my daughter to be able to read them all as she improves her reading skills. A++ Highly recommend this book!

My grandson and I had a lot of fun reading this story. It was thought provoking as Stink and Judy teamed up to solve a variety of riddles as they participated in a treasure hunt. I think the ending was very well written, proving that kids can be generous and kind.

This book was a gift for one of my grandsons. He seems to like the Judy Moody and Stink series. Since I believe reading to be very important for children & this series makes reading fun for him, I'm all for it.

Twin grandsons love it! My granddaughter loved Judy Moody and now the boys can enjoy the same misadventures with her brother Stink!

This review has been done by my beautiful 10-year old daughter Victoria, who is an avid book reader:`The Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Treasure Hunt' is sooo cool!!! Mad Molly O'Maggot (aka Judy Moody) and Scurvy Stink (aka Stink) are going to Ocrcacoke Island. But not until they get on the Island, they don't know it's actually Pirate Island. They meet a funny pirate of the name Scurvy Sam (aka Captain Weevil). Scurvy Sam tells them there's a treasure hunt, the third annual one in fact. Mad Molly O'Maggot and Scurvy Stink are so excited. The next day the treasure hunt starts. The winner gets a gold doubloon and a ride on the ship `Queen Anne's Revenge Two'. But something starts to worry Judy and Stink; Other kids: Smart Girl and HER brother Tall Boy are also competing. As Mad Molly O' Maggot and Scurvy Stink start getting clues, they notice that Smart Girl and Tall Boy are spying on them. They get all different kinds of clues that lead them to the end. Of course there's a happy ending!!!! Mad Molly O' Maggot and Scurvy Stink win but.........There's always a BUT to a great story...........they share the winning prize with someone else!!! If you want to know who, you got to read the story.This is a great book. More likely for seven years old to twelve years old. No less, no more. I am ten, and actually thought it was great! It is easy `cause it doesn't have toooo many pages (114 pages), though I have read Harry Potter (which is beyond great!). It has also big letters for starters. More Judy Moody books are available in almost every bookstore and on amazon.com. And I enjoyed them all!!!

It's a good overview / primer of online marketing.Don't expect to dig deep or master any of the techniques.However, if you're new to this, it's a good introduction to get you on the path of what to learn.

The book is a course in Online Marketing, offering a certificate of achievement through its publisher. One goes to their website, and takes an exam when they are ready to do so. The book its self is a good entry level textbook covering all the major areas of Online Marketing to date. It reads like a text book, and it will make a nice ready reference to my own professional library. However, after passing the exam with flying colors, I had to jump through hoops to get the certificate in my hot little hands. I had to email and telephone the publisher several times, till I finally got someone who knew what they were doing, and got me the certificate in about 4 minutes after the call was completed. Not very confident in the competence of the publisher, but the book is more valuable than the price paid.

This book captures your attention with a multitasking marketing approach to understanding the role of SEO, online advertising, email marketing and social media. The content is very current and easy to read. The book is especially suitable to those seeking a start-to-finish primer written from a practitioner's perspective. In addition, the book serves as a comprehensive overview of online marketing for those familiar with the basics but lost in the myriad of white papers and books devoted to the subject. As an educator, I would recommend Lorrie Thomas' book for classes seeking to capture the essence of social media and internet marketing without the philosophies and theories that confuse students. As a practitioner, I found this book an excellent resource to organize online marketing development steps in a check list style that does not boggle the mind with tech terms, tools and other detail. A really good reliable cookbook with interesting and well written explanations. The recipes I tried were tasty this is one of the best Jewish cookbooks around.

I could not believe this was a used book... I've purchased new books that have arrived more Beat up than this one did.. Great reading.. good recpies and loads of History... Thank's Matt.... Great Job...

I liked this for the wide variety of regional recipies. My cousin reccomended it and it didnt disappoint.

I simply bought this book expecting some mouth watering knish and blintzes recepies, lox and herring and you name it... real jewish foods. Instead, the author collected whatever the Jewish people ate, whether it belongs to the Jewish cuisine or not.. I mean "TABBOULEH" ??? and since when was Hummus or Kibbe a Jewish cuisine??It will take a lot of time to go through all of this, but if it is "just Jewish cuisine" you are looking for, this book is not for you. I gave the author 3 stars though, based on the "literature and history" information in each chapter. But then it is a cook book not a history book that I wanted. At $7 , used, it is fine... No more than that. And by the way, perhaps I missed it, but this book does not have ONE picture in it... Don't you love seeing what you are / will be eating ??

As of 1948 there were 100,000 Jews in Tunisia. Today there are fewer than 2,000."As the "Food Maven" columnist at The Forward, Goodman used his reporting skills to search out diverse cuisines of far-flung, once vital centers of Jewish life, some now on the brink of extinction."What I tried to do with this book was to locate and preserve food traditions from communities around the world that are today endangered because the communities themselves are endangered," he said. "So many of them weren't able to survive the 20th century or survive only in the most attenuated form."More than 170 recipes, some of which have never before been written down, document the rich and varied Jewish culture of 29 countries, linked by law and ritual, yet distinguished by unique customs, traditions and celebrations, the history of a people told through its food.But what is Jewish food? Can it even be defined?"There are very few dishes that are shared by all Jewish communities around the world," Goodman noted, "only two or three, and only one shared ingredient, matzah. You couldn't define a cuisine based entirely on matzah. Jewish food is food that has been made by Jewish communities through the centuries and sustained by them, wherever they happened to be."Both Ashkenazic and Sephardic cuisines and cultures are celebrated, so you see the Sabbath stew, one of the few dishes shared by all Jewish communities -- charoset is another -- in the Solet of Hungary and the Moroccan Dafina."Jewish Food" is an exciting read, filled with fascinating history. Did you know the mother of King Ferdinand of Spain was a converso, that Yemenites were the only people on earth who used Hebrew for communication before it became the official language of Israel and that the earliest borscht was made not from beets but from parsnips?Nestled among the recipes are essays on selected ingredients, dishes and communities, deepening our understanding of their historical context."Food is kind of a repository of a community's history," Goodman observed. "You can see the wanderings of people over time. You can see the influence of conquest, of poverty, of travel. Food becomes a history lesson on a plate."As an example, he cited the use of pine nuts and raisins in Roman Jewish cooking, as in the Italian Matzo Fritters with Honey Syrup."These ingredients were brought to Sicily by the Arabs where the Jews learned how to use them. Then when they got kicked out of Sicily during the Spanish Inquisition, they brought them when they moved up to Rome. The cinnamon and honey sauce, giulebbe, you find in a lot of Roman Jewish desserts. You can see the history of these people in this dish."And what would Passover be without macaroons? But, if you've tasted only the store-bought variety, you're in for a treat."The same way that gefilte fish has gotten a bad name because most people think it comes out of a jar, macaroons got a bad name because they think they come in those metal tins," noted Goodman. "Macaroons you make yourself are so much better and just phenomenally simple to make."The Pistachio Macaroons are made with rosewater, "a very common ingredient in Middle Eastern cooking, as are pistachios, and used a lot by Syrians," he said. "They're a nice alternative for people who want something a little different than the typical coconut macaroons."Sadly, some recipes are irretrievable, Goodman said."There are so few of these dishes left," he said. "It's really like an extinct species. So many generous people shared their recipes with me. Some in the New York area would invite me to their home and let me cook with them in their kitchen. It was just an amazingly moving experience for me. But with each recipe they'd give me, they'd say, `I wish you could have tried these other two that so-and-so used to do, but she died.' That dish is gone forever."Pizzarelle Con Giulebbe (Italian Matzah Fritters with Honey Syrup)Syrup1 cup honey1/2 cup water2 teaspoons ground cinnamonFritters5 matzahs, broken into small pieces1/4 cup sugar1/4 teaspoon kosher for Pesach vanillaPinch of salt1/4 cup raisins1/4 cup pine nuts3 egg yolks, lightly beaten2 egg whitesVegetable oil for deep frying1. Make the syrup: Combine the honey, water and cinnamon in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cover and bring to a boil, then uncover, lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Remove from heat and let cool. Pour into a serving bowl.2. Make the batter: Place the matzah pieces in a bowl of cold water and soak until soft but not falling apart, one to two minutes. Drain in a colander and squeeze out any excess water. In a large bowl, mix together the matzah pieces, sugar, vanilla, salt, raisins, pine nuts and egg yolks.3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gently fold the beaten egg whites into the matzo mixture.4. Make the pizzarelle: In a Dutch oven or other large, heavy pot, heat at least 2 inches of oil to 375 F on a deep-fat thermometer. In small batches, drop heaping tablespoons of the matzah mixture into the oil. Fry in batches, turning as necessary, until they are a deep brown on all sides, about five minutes total. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve warm or at room temperature, accompanied by the honey syrup.Makes about 25.Pistachio Macaroons3 cups (about 1 pound)shelled pistachios1 cup sugar3 egg whites1 1/2 teaspoons rosewater1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease two baking sheets or line them with parchment paper.2. Grind the pistachios with the sugar in the bowl of a food processor, leaving some chunks for texture; transfer the mixture to a large bowl.3. Beat the egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gently fold them, with the rosewater, into the pistachio mixture.4. Drop the batter by heaping tablespoonfuls in balls onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving at least 1 inch between. Bake until lightly browned, 17 to 20 minutes. Let cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.Makes about 30.

This volume is almost two books in one. One part is a story of the Jewish diaspora told from the standpoint of the foods they had in their new lands. This takes the form of a series of essays that discuss the movement of food with the people. As they went to new places, they encountered new ingrediants and couldn't get others. The food had to change accordingly. These essays give a history of some of these changes and are fascinating to see how foods develop through change.The other part of the book is a cookbook of Jewish dishes from around the world. Of course there are the old standbys, mostly originating in the middle east. But the variety is what is striking here, you wouldn't think of Bombay curried fish as being a Jewish dish. What about Mexican Baked Blintzes -- what, you don't usually put poblano peppers in your blintzes. Then there's sweet and sour pot roast, brisket with coca-cola and many, many more.This is an unexpected book because so many Jewish cookbooks only have the traditionals and here there is so much more, and the stories to go with the dishes.
