The text is very poorly formatted and full of typos. The paragraphs aren't even properly separated. It looks like someone copy-and-pasted an online version into a Word doc. (Since this work is in the public domain, that might be exactly what happened.) It's also freakishly large: This book is 10 inches tall by 7 inches wide by 2 inches thick. AND it's a flimsy paperback, so its huge size makes to flop around terribly. It's a crude copy, not professional at all.

I won't go into the literary or artistic worth of Anna Karenina except for one thing. Tolstoy's writing about the Russian countryside and even agricultural practice is so picturesque and atmospheric that you feel like you can smell the various crops. Superb writing. This Carefully Crafted Classics version of Anna Karenina was excellent. The Maude translation, yes, does show its age, and more than a bit. But it has to be better than certain translations of other classic Russian works I've read over the past couple of years. And I appreciated the embedded footnotes. They provided good explanation of context and translation of the frequent use of French without wrecking the flow. This version is a steal at the price and highly recommended. I'm subtracting a star because of the dated translation. Also because of the weird use of Western first name and Russian patronymic, which I find jarring but which other readers might not object to at all.How neat would it be to be able to toggle a phrase from English to Russian, just to see what the original was? C'mon, developers; help us out here.

Anna Karenina, the 1918 Maude translation of Leo Tolstoy's 1870's masterpiece on the Kindle, is as fine a version as any for anyone who has never gotten immersed in the post-serfdom Russian society of these fabulously drawn characters' lives. I decided to take this cheap version for the first my time through, and I absolutely loved it.Anna Karenina is much more than a story about a passionate love affair and the heart wrenching effects that come about of it. Anna's intense and often volatile relationship with Count Vronsky, and the wronged husband Karenin in the middle of it--the way they deal with each and how society in turn deals with them--sure enough is the most dramatic part of the book, and the part that gets the most attention. Yet the heart and soul of this epic I feel comes out of the sweet romantic relationship between two other characters: Levin and Kitty. Their relationship is every bit as captivating as Anna and Vronsky's, and the added detail of Kitty being once a love interest of Vronsky, before he falls for Anna, creates some fascinating tension. Less prominent than these two relationships is the one between Oblonsky and Dolly (who is Kitty's sister) who are in a marriage whose flame of love has largely died out and spend most of their time apart, probably only remaining together for their children and for societal benefit.Tolstoy's ability to draw characters in your mind, to make you almost feel like you know them through a combination of action, dialog and thought processes, is as great as from any author I've ever read. In addition to the seven characters I have mentioned many others like Levin's two brothers and Kitty and Dolly's parents and Varenka a friend of Kitty's and Levin's friend Katavasov and various Countesses and Princes and more than I could mention; everyone is distinguishable with even minor character playing critical parts. It's of course a very long novel, but it earns its length, for the most part, with its depth. This book is often mentioned as a candidate for the greatest novel of all time. In my opinion there are a few flaws that keep it quite from being that. The character Levin seems to dominate long swaths of the book, and while much of it is interesting some of it can drag, especially when it's him alone wallowing in his own thoughts. More pages are dedicated to him than any other character, far surpassing even the title character herself. The biggest issue I have though is the last part the book (the novel is separated into eight parts); though finely written, as a conclusion it is largely unnecessary. To me, without spoiling anything, the end of part 7 is the real end of this exception and powerful work of art. These flaws however are minor, hardly detracting from my high opinion overall.I can't speak for the newer English translation of Anna Karenina, the Pevear-Volohonsky one, which has garnered a lot of praise, but the Maude translation, while nearly 100 years old, will more than satisfy lovers of great storytelling and great character development. Personally I prefer Tolstoy's War and Peace and a few of Dostoyevsky's books to this one, but that's personal preference. This is certainly a classic of the highest standard.Note: There are helpful character and term guides and also a brief biography on Tolstoy. Nice additional stuff.

The book-- This is a book of domestic relations and does not exclusively concern Anna and her lover. It is about choices and accommodations-- our own and the way we judge, sympathize, and react to the choices of others. I say "our" and "we" because the choices and reactions are sympathetic, and it is very easy to identify with the characters.Anna Karenina has some plot points and scenes in common with War and Peace-- a flirtation and one-sided infatuation that almost derails the right romance, nursing a dying character, and women cranky when a man doesn't return when he says he will. Anna Karenina also has a substantial dose of philosophizing, albeit on a different subject and much less than War and Peace. The translation-- much is made of how the first few words are translated (happy families alike/unhappy families different). I can't comment on those kinds of choices. I can say this translation is highly readable. The translation handles the characters transitions from speaking in Russian to French or English smoothly. The translation also deftly incorporates a few, very brief explanations of certain practices. Very clear, and very readable.Kindle-- works very well. Worth the $2.99.

I love the story and author but the printing is so light I can barely read it. I have to hold it up to the light toread. Very disappointed that their quality control did not catch before mailing out. This is a new product too. Also, it was supposed to be delivered within a couple of days it took a week.
