In general, I dislike reality shows. Only one I can tolerate is The Voice. My hugest quibble is that it cannot be an authentic reality show if you know you're being filmed. You simply can't help but put on an act. Having said that, I was, conversely, keen on the premise of this book. In "Skin of Your Teeth Survival," contestants - some of whom are self-described preppers - are transported to harsh environments and the camera crew films their efforts to survive. Pretty basic stuff, right? But what if, during the filming, an EMP detonates and takes out the national power grid? And the reality show becomes horrifyingly real?I (mostly) ate up this book. I think I found a new writer to follow in Grace Hamilton. And I'm low-key stoked that Surviving the Swamp is only book one in a series. Going in, I assumed the narrative point-of-views would alternate between Wolf and Regan, but no. It's all from Regan Goodfellow's perspective. She's a 27-year-old freelance IT specialist and bearer of a colossal chip on her shoulder. She's had one of those crummy upbringings that only a guy like Charles Dickens can salivate over. Regan grew up a loner, angry, self-reliant, and very guarded against those who try to get close to her. She doesn't trust people.But I like the people she falls in with in the swamp. It's not until, second week into the show, the camera crew fails to show up at the rendezvous point that the contestants finally get an inkling that something's screwy. It's up to the show's creator and host, Wolf Henderson, to guide the group out of the swamp, or those that decided to stay, anyway. (Some chose to strike out on their own.)Maybe it would've made for even more heightened drama if those that decided to stay were the weaker contestants. Honestly, if I were stuck in an inhospitable place, I can do worse than get stuck with this bunch. I also enjoyed the distinct personality tics. My favorite character is actually Tabitha, the paramedic with the sunny disposition. She and Regan are polar opposites in attitude. They become friends, anyway. There's Tabitha's big, loud mechanic hubby, Geno. And the lumbering, know-it-all science guy, Fred. And Wolf himself, who is a prepper and a survivalist and, if I remember it, an ex-serviceman. That's a solid squad with diverse skills.And what does Regan bring to the table? Well, she's feisty. And proclaims to be street-smart. But she's in a swamp.This may be the first post-apocalyptic, EMP grid-down story I'd read where the setting is in a swamp. It makes for an interesting read as there's plenty of knowledge dropped about how to survive while in a swamp, like what flora are edible or medicinal, fishing techniques, the importance of dry socks and of building a platform off the wet ground for when you rest up, etc.Yes, this is one of those survival stories in which a character is trying to get to their prepper compound. We get snippets from the characters in that compound, courtesy of a teenaged girl's personal journal. Hopefully, we get more of Lily in subsequent volumes.This was an excellent read, more informative and character-driven than action-packed. For the action-heads, there's a boss skirmish near the end where Regan proves her worth. But she's my big problem with the book. She's very hard to like. She's so dang mistrustful. She's arrogant and thinks that she can do better on her own. She was all the time challenging every decision Wolf, the survival expert, made, never mind that she's a straight-up novice in a swamp. She complains and argues with everyone and when she makes a poor decision later on, it's hard to sympathize with her plight. Anyway, I realize Regan is probably the most "dramatic" character in the group, so the story has to go thru her. But I wouldn't mind it if later books feature, say, Tabitha or the teenaged Lily as the point-of-view character. I'd like a deeper dive into what they think of Regan. Anyway, 4 out of 5 stars for Surviving the Swamp. Good read about a group of survivors who learn about the apocalypse a few weeks late and the repercussions to that.
I liked the premise of a survival show turning into a reality. One of the main characters, Regan kind of went over the top with her constant withdrawal from the group. I'm hoping she'll come around a little better than she has so far. I really like Wolf because he leads without pushing but has a quiet strength.
Another good book by Grace Hamilton! I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. Could not put this book down once I started reading it.
I received a free copy of this book from Hidden Gems in exchange for an honest review.Surviving the Swamp is a story about a group of people from a reality TV show who get stranded in a swamp after an EMP hits, leaving them with no contact with the outside world, and very few supplies.I’m sorry, but hated Regan. She’s not a strong independent loner, she’s just a smart-mouthed, know-it-all, moron. I found myself hoping she would get less shrew-like and idiotic as the story unfolded, that she would be humbled by the experience…..I’ll let you find out for yourself if she does, I don’t want to spoil it. No one else was all that likeable either. I know they were supposed to be “real†people, but seriously, the stupidity in this group was a little extreme, even for fiction. The interactions and dialogue between the characters felt forced and doesn’t flow well, and the language was pretty cheesy. I did like how the people they encountered acted more like I imagine people would in this situation, ranging from helpful to hostile, and everything in between. Overall, not a horrible read, but the Regan character made it a very difficult read. I never found myself rooting for her, I just wanted her to shut up.
This was an okay read.It does generally work as post-apoc and it’s nice to read one that’s really just about the human factor (i.e. no zombies, pandemics, aliens, etc.) – and I really hope the series stays that way!The book has its grim parts, but our characters are mostly enjoyable to read.Our main character is a little harder to feel for. She’s a mix of prickly (which is okay) and goo-goo eyed over a guy (which kind of isn’t). I really wanted her to just be the tough girl she tries to be and no worry about if he likes her likes her.I’m not entirely certain that I’m up for the next book. All the main character's ‘feels’ were kind of getting in the way of adventure. We’ll see…*ARC Provided via Net Galley
