This book provides fascinating insight explaining how, why, and when evangelical Christians came to adopt the pro-life view of abortion, and what this change portends for American politics more generally. Lewis documents how the strategy evangelicals employed to achieve their goals shifted-- from making arguments in which they portrayed themselves as the protector of community morality and decency, to ones that rely on the use of religious liberty as a fundamental individual right protected in the 1st Amendment. This change has become central to their attempt to protect and expand their influence in American politics. Moreover, as it has met with increased success on the issue of abortion, they increasingly applied the strategy on other issues with which they have met with at least some success. I found especially interesting the (short) chapter on gay rights in which he argues that the Christian right's inability to counter the gay marriage claims was due in large part to the absence of an individual rights-based argument available to opponents of gay marriage. The implication here is that the extent to which the Christian right is likely to win is heavily dependent on their ability to identify and employ individual rights-based positions on the issue in question. This book is well-written and documented and nicely melds survey data with historical work.
Lewis's research is top-notch, combining archival research with analysis of public opinion surveys to paint a vivid picture of an unexpected transformation shaping American religion and politics. If you want to understand how Christian conservatives are situating themselves for the next phase of the culture wars, read this book -- it provides a clear and convincing picture of how rhetoric on abortion has transformed the Christian conservative movement in important ways.
