Great resource

Great book, a classic on the design scene.

Product in good conditions and good contents.I really liked it and i recommend it a lot. the price was nice.

This book is mainly a pictorial of 291 poster designs from the very late 1800's up until the late 1960's. There are many great and important examples found in this book, both well and lesser known posters are showcased. Some parts of this book could described as egotistical going into the 50's and 60's as there are many Müller-Brockmann works shown; however, I found this to be quite relevant with Swiss design of that time being so revolutionary. Then again I am a great admirer of his work. Additionally, the writings throughout the book are quite enlightening and are not too heavy to read. The printing quality is great, examples are large, shown in full colour and printed on very nice stock. The creator's name, size, year, type of reproduction, and descriptions of the purpose are included for each poster. One of the pro's to this book was the inclusion of these very brief descriptions. A very good piece of information to include in a design collective as it is essential in order to judge whether or not a piece of design is effective; something a few overrated books on identity could use (e.g. Los Logos).

I just feel happy for finding this amazing book just when I was needing it. Muller-Brockmann did a pioneer work by researching and assembling all the historical posters in one single publication. Useful for teachers, students and graphic design professionals who love posters.

The text is very poorly formatted and full of typos. The paragraphs aren't even properly separated. It looks like someone copy-and-pasted an online version into a Word doc. (Since this work is in the public domain, that might be exactly what happened.) It's also freakishly large: This book is 10 inches tall by 7 inches wide by 2 inches thick. AND it's a flimsy paperback, so its huge size makes to flop around terribly. It's a crude copy, not professional at all.

I won't go into the literary or artistic worth of Anna Karenina except for one thing. Tolstoy's writing about the Russian countryside and even agricultural practice is so picturesque and atmospheric that you feel like you can smell the various crops. Superb writing. This Carefully Crafted Classics version of Anna Karenina was excellent. The Maude translation, yes, does show its age, and more than a bit. But it has to be better than certain translations of other classic Russian works I've read over the past couple of years. And I appreciated the embedded footnotes. They provided good explanation of context and translation of the frequent use of French without wrecking the flow. This version is a steal at the price and highly recommended. I'm subtracting a star because of the dated translation. Also because of the weird use of Western first name and Russian patronymic, which I find jarring but which other readers might not object to at all.How neat would it be to be able to toggle a phrase from English to Russian, just to see what the original was? C'mon, developers; help us out here.

Anna Karenina, the 1918 Maude translation of Leo Tolstoy's 1870's masterpiece on the Kindle, is as fine a version as any for anyone who has never gotten immersed in the post-serfdom Russian society of these fabulously drawn characters' lives. I decided to take this cheap version for the first my time through, and I absolutely loved it.Anna Karenina is much more than a story about a passionate love affair and the heart wrenching effects that come about of it. Anna's intense and often volatile relationship with Count Vronsky, and the wronged husband Karenin in the middle of it--the way they deal with each and how society in turn deals with them--sure enough is the most dramatic part of the book, and the part that gets the most attention. Yet the heart and soul of this epic I feel comes out of the sweet romantic relationship between two other characters: Levin and Kitty. Their relationship is every bit as captivating as Anna and Vronsky's, and the added detail of Kitty being once a love interest of Vronsky, before he falls for Anna, creates some fascinating tension. Less prominent than these two relationships is the one between Oblonsky and Dolly (who is Kitty's sister) who are in a marriage whose flame of love has largely died out and spend most of their time apart, probably only remaining together for their children and for societal benefit.Tolstoy's ability to draw characters in your mind, to make you almost feel like you know them through a combination of action, dialog and thought processes, is as great as from any author I've ever read. In addition to the seven characters I have mentioned many others like Levin's two brothers and Kitty and Dolly's parents and Varenka a friend of Kitty's and Levin's friend Katavasov and various Countesses and Princes and more than I could mention; everyone is distinguishable with even minor character playing critical parts. It's of course a very long novel, but it earns its length, for the most part, with its depth. This book is often mentioned as a candidate for the greatest novel of all time. In my opinion there are a few flaws that keep it quite from being that. The character Levin seems to dominate long swaths of the book, and while much of it is interesting some of it can drag, especially when it's him alone wallowing in his own thoughts. More pages are dedicated to him than any other character, far surpassing even the title character herself. The biggest issue I have though is the last part the book (the novel is separated into eight parts); though finely written, as a conclusion it is largely unnecessary. To me, without spoiling anything, the end of part 7 is the real end of this exception and powerful work of art. These flaws however are minor, hardly detracting from my high opinion overall.I can't speak for the newer English translation of Anna Karenina, the Pevear-Volohonsky one, which has garnered a lot of praise, but the Maude translation, while nearly 100 years old, will more than satisfy lovers of great storytelling and great character development. Personally I prefer Tolstoy's War and Peace and a few of Dostoyevsky's books to this one, but that's personal preference. This is certainly a classic of the highest standard.Note: There are helpful character and term guides and also a brief biography on Tolstoy. Nice additional stuff.

The book-- This is a book of domestic relations and does not exclusively concern Anna and her lover. It is about choices and accommodations-- our own and the way we judge, sympathize, and react to the choices of others. I say "our" and "we" because the choices and reactions are sympathetic, and it is very easy to identify with the characters.Anna Karenina has some plot points and scenes in common with War and Peace-- a flirtation and one-sided infatuation that almost derails the right romance, nursing a dying character, and women cranky when a man doesn't return when he says he will. Anna Karenina also has a substantial dose of philosophizing, albeit on a different subject and much less than War and Peace. The translation-- much is made of how the first few words are translated (happy families alike/unhappy families different). I can't comment on those kinds of choices. I can say this translation is highly readable. The translation handles the characters transitions from speaking in Russian to French or English smoothly. The translation also deftly incorporates a few, very brief explanations of certain practices. Very clear, and very readable.Kindle-- works very well. Worth the $2.99.

I love the story and author but the printing is so light I can barely read it. I have to hold it up to the light toread. Very disappointed that their quality control did not catch before mailing out. This is a new product too. Also, it was supposed to be delivered within a couple of days it took a week.

My six month old daughter really likes this book. The words are just the words from the song but it is fun to sing the song while reading this book to her. She loves that the cover is reflective and that the illustrations are simple.

Bought this because my wife and I are expecting our first child in January. The song this was based off was the favorite song of one of my grandmothers, who died about a year and a half ago after a 30 year battle with Parkinson's Disease. I figured this would be a good way to keep my grandmother alive and a small part of my child's early life since she couldn't be here for the arrival.

A two year old loves this book, and the song - most of the time mommy has to sing it rather than read it!

What a fun book to read with my daughter. Love the board book because it's something my teething 12 mo daughter can literally and figuratively "sink her teeth into!"The picture of the book on the site is actually different from what you receive. It doesn't show that the board book cover and back is a shiny reflective cover.... It really enhances the "sun" in the front. Guess it was their way of emphasizing "sunshine"? 😂

We gave this to our little one for valentine's day and she loves it. The cover is kind of metallic and grabs her attentions. It is a cute book that repeats the lyrics to the song. Appealing illustrations, simple text, sturdy board book.

There is nothing fancy about this book. Just the song You Are My Sunshine written as a book. But this is one of our favorites!

Absolutely love this book. A very close family member that passed away years ago used to sing this to me. It’s nice quality board pages. Small but not too small. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is that the front cover was marked up a bit possibly from transport. Otherwise great condition.

My 7 month old loves the shiny cover on the book. The words are exactly the same as the ones my grandmother used to sing to me when I was a baby.

This is such a lovely, classic song, and the book version is sweet. I like the illustrations and it’s nice and durable. The cover is shiny, which is sure to be appealing to babies! I love singing this with my twins.

This book is an exploration of how to constructively uncouple people from conspiracy theories. I enjoyed the book because it is relatable and useable. Mick uses popular real-world experiences and examples from his work which help the reader understand the inside-baseball of people and theories so they structure effective talking points and arguments while maintaining a good relationship with whom they are talking to. This makes it very thoughtful and relevant to anybody debating anything with anybody today. My only criticism is I wish he would have dipped a toe into some of the bigger political conspiracy theories but this might be good for another book! I'm suggesting this book to everybody I know right now.

A good resource on strategies to nudge your friends and loved ones into the light so they can pull free. Not only will you gain techniques to help others in need, you will also be challenged to evaluate your own beliefs. While not specifically a book on critical thinking, you will undoubtedly gain tools for your skeptical toolbox to help sort out fact from fiction. You will dive into some basic science education that isn't dumbed-down, nor too complex. You will finish this book as a better ambassador to lead your friends and family...and possibly yourself, out of the rabbit hole.

This review comes with the caveat that I know Mick West and consider him a friend and a peer. Also, I am reviewing the advanced copy PDF that I was sent in June 2018 in order to be able to write a blurb for the book. I understand that he has made a few changes mainly in the final chapter that will appear in the final product.I loved the book, but probably for different reasons than what others are going to write, I loved the interviews with people who have been in the Rabbit Holes and managed to find their way out. Mick included many of these cautionary tales, how they got in, where they drew the line with their conspiracy theories (there are levels apparently) and how and why they got out of that mindset. Mick explains that most of the time people get into it from a video. In the “old days” it was a VHS tape, then DVD’s and currently it is YouTube. The algorithm for YouTube keeps suggesting more and more videos for binge watching, apparently, they are all in the same vein of belief. This just encourages the viewer to fall farther and farther into the Rabbit Hole.Mick cautions the non-conspiracy theorist to always be kind. Almost everyone can fall for these compelling stories at some point in your life. Belief in conspiracy theories has nothing to do with intelligence. And helping your friend avoid the Rabbit Hole or helping them climb out will take healthy polite discussions. You will not reason someone out of this conspiracy thinking by telling them they are stupid or yelling at them. Throughout the chapters, Mick gives us talking points we can use to understand the more common conspiracy theories. I found that really helpful.Flat-Earth, Chemtrails and 9/11 were covered in detail, I can’t believe that in 2018 we are talking about the flat-earth and chemtrails, amazing. The chapter that affected me the most was the one on false-flags, it was just heartbreaking that people genuinely don’t believe that these tragedies didn’t happen, and that the government (or some other group) has hired actors and paid off people to make it seem like they happened, all because of some kind of agenda. Just this morning watching the news about the children on the Mexican border being separated from their parents, MSNBC interviewed several fundamentalist pastors about their thoughts on the issue. One man stated that he doesn’t think it is really happening, those children are all paid actors. I could barely believe what I was hearing. Not only was he proud of what he was saying, but he apparently has a congregation and is a person with enough notoriety that MSNBC would ask him for an interview, and he was happy with his name being on screen. This man probably thinks lots of the population believes in his way of thinking.I think that most thinking people will enjoy this book, and not just because you love to debate strangers on social media (stop doing that, it’s a waste of your time) but because you probably have a family member, co-worker, school friend that you can see is slipping down into a Rabbit Hole and with this book you will be given some great talking points to divert them from falling into the Rabbit Hole and help others find the footing to climb out.

If you are trying to understand why some of your friends or relatives believe outlandish or unusual conspiracy theories, read this book. The primary benefit of this book, is for a personal understanding of why they feel this way, and how you (as a friend or relative) can cope or communicate with them in a sane and polite manner.

Excellent book giving the reader a lot of information to help combat conspiracy theories and those who believe them. I would say this fails the basic test of "helping backpackers have a good experience on a budget." Little helpful info on how to save money, such as staying at a Bahamian-run hotel off the beaten path (e.g., in the up-and-coming Golden Gates neighborhood), the current rate of a day-pass to Atlantis, or actually affordable places to eat. There was some useful information about historical sights, but Lonely Planet should really send another writer to visit for an update. Budget travel to the Bahamas is hard, but it's possible. Grabbing a meat patty for lunch, for example, is a great way to save. This guide actually *recommends* Graycliff, even though their food is pretty objectively poor value (you could get the same American meal in NYC for 30% less--just have some damn conch). I really got the impression that whomever visited here before really didn't like the Bahamas. It's no Thailand, but I spent under $1,000 including airfare and stayed for a week (in an unfinished hotel with friends), saw beautiful fish and amazing beaches, and ate the best Greek food I've had in my life. Lonely Planet needs to send someone who appreciates budget travel in the Bahamas for what it is.

I am a native of The Bahamas who bought the book to get an idea of how tourists would see the islands. That said, I am really enjoying being the owner of this book. The guide itself can use an update to reflect current prices and market. But other than that, it's interesting and I enjoy reading it! It also made me aware of quite a few things that I had not previously known.

Good book easy to read and helpful for planning your trip

Nice book. Informative and clear. Didn't have a ton of info on Andros, but that is probably because there is not much to write about! I got the info that I needed.

Information was interesting

Just what I needed with all details on the all the islands. Very helpful for my upcoming trip planning. Thank you!

I always choose Lonely planet as it had been accurate and helpful in my trips and to plan them beforehand.

This book tells a lot about all the islands. I'm going to island hop around the bahamas and feel this book is very informative

Sonny Liston was the biggest and baddest Heavyweight fighter of them all. He had a jackhammer jab, a left hook that had KO written all over it, and he was generally impervious to opponent's punches. He dominated the heavyweights from 1956-1964 (up until Clay). Yet, because of his lurid prison past, the sportswriters disliked him and he never got his "due" as a truly great heavyweight champion. Well, author Paul Gallender tries to right this wrong with his excellent book on Liston. He argues that Liston was not the thug that most writers made him out to be. He makes a fair case of showing the "softer" side of Liston, but from my perspective, the evidence is pretty thin that Liston was anybody's boy scout.Whenever the name Liston comes up in boxing talk, fans want to know the answers to these three questions: 1. Did Liston quit due to a legit injury in the first Clay fight, or was he told to quit? 2. Why did Liston throw the second Clay/Ali fight? 3. How did Liston really die? While the author adequately and convincingly answers question #1, it is apparent that he sheds no definitive light on the next two questions. Yes, he has theories, but he offers no more than any other book on these last two issues. And for me, this is the reason I purchased the book - to learn more about the dive with Ali and his "mysterious" death. Gallender disappoints on these last two points. Overall, Gallender makes a fine case for considering Liston one of the greatest heavies ever, and posits that only Ali could have beaten him. After reading this book, I tend to agree.I devoured this book in one day. It is a very different look at Liston, although I believe his favorable presentation of Liston is quite biased. The author downplays Liston's assault on a St. Louis policeman and his conviction for armed robbery, as well as his numerous arrests. Did the police harass Liston? Yes indeed. Was Liston treated unfairly by the press - most likely. Was Sonny Liston a saint?Boxing fans will enjoy this unique look at the Big Bear, Charles "Sonny" Liston.kone

This book does a great tribute to Sonny Liston, who apparently is one of the most misunderstood celebrities of the Twentieth Century. That is probably the best thing the book accomplishes for the reader. The next best thing is that it prompts the reader to find even greater in-depth knowledge, which I will be doing when I finish this book. I am sorry to give a book that I believe to be such a great tribute to its subject three stars, but it is the most wretchedly proof-read book I have seen in a long time. Spelling errors abound, but what is even worse, when conveying information about public figures I found at least one misspelling of a person's name. If you are going to go out on a limb with sensitive information, the name in question absolutely must be correct. I don't care how "digital" your processes have become, great proof-reading apparently needs to be done by live, well-educated people.

Sonny Liston had one of the saddest lives imaginable. This book shows the many sides of Sonny Liston.I was a kid when Sonny was going to fight Floyd Patterson and everybody was talking about it.People treated Sonny horribly.A lot of writers wrote bad things about him then thought he was a moody when they talked to him. They called him a criminal, thug, animal, convict and mafia associate. At that time boxing was run by the mob and all fighters had dealings with them. Many things are addressed here like the Patterson fight, his childhood,Ali escapades and fights and his real age.Its too bad he did not have enough REAL FRIENDS.His true love was his kindness to children which makes him a good man.

Rarely has a public figure, a celebrity, lived a life that raised as many unanswered questions as Sonny Liston. The lineal heavyweight champion of the world was a man of seemingly endless contradictions. His life after losing the heavyweight title was lived under a shroud of murkiness. His death, to this day, is an unsolved mystery.Bob Mee, in his fine book about the intersection of Muhammad Ali and Liston in their two fights probes the psyche and life of Sonny Liston as completely up to that time as any writer ever has. He contrasts the personalities of the two athletes, and details the new breed of journalist of the time who had become lazy and self-centered, looking for glib athletes to feed them storylines, and tearing down those who would not cooperate. Liston was an easy target.Paul Gallender, in his first book, explores the myths of an athlete who never really had a fair shot in public opinion. A man who might have been a thug, but was a loyal friend. Who might have been one of the smartest heavyweight champions (aside from Gene Tunney), but was portrayed as an ignorant oaf. Who was a devoted husband, but a serial philanderer. Who had a lockdown training regimen, yet went soft and lazy prior to the Cassius Clay fight. Was he a decent, slightly flawed man just trying to make a living? Or was he a career criminal worthy of all the arrests and harassments from police departments in every city he lived in. He loved children, and was close to his clergy. Was that the true Liston, or was it the mob courier, as portrayed in James Ellmore "The Cold Six Thousand"?And what of Liston's life after the title? Does anyone really know how he supported himself? At some point, FBI files will de-classify, and maybe a truer picture can be painted. Bob Mee hints that Liston was running drugs outside of the mob's tacit approval, and this prompted his violent death. This book leaves many questions unanswered. While Gallender brings up, and brushes past many of Liston's rough edges, the drinking, the whoring, wild spending, the drug use, he does not thoroughly explore them, as much as his other inconsistent characteristics. While he extols Liston's virtues as a fighter, and there were many, he doesn't really break down his flaws in the ring.Still, this has to be considedered up to this time the definitive story of an American Sports enigma. Hats off to Mr. Gallender for his work.

There's a very brief entry by Jeremy Irons, a slightly longer one by Lyne that deals with the travails of the film following its release after everyone's heroic effort to get it made, then Peter Schiff's longer introduction that covers much of the same ground in greater detail. The bulk of the book is made up of the shooting script -- the scenes as they were written and filmed -- before the actual editing and trimming, plus a lot of real estate devoted to screen shots from the film.I said Schiff's essay gives us greater detail but "greater" is such a relative term. It's clear that getting the production funded, filmed, and marketed was a nightmare, but I'd have liked to know more about some of the pre-production decisions regarding the movie as movie -- not as so much of the public (and professionals) saw it, a rabble-rousing endorsement of pedophilia. Schiff tells us that Irons was the obvious choice for Humbert. Fine, but why? And what made Dominique Swain stand out from the thousands of other young girls whose mothers would willingly have them debauched on screen? Well -- we don't find out.The rest of the book is in many ways more interesting than the introductory sections. It follows pretty closely the dialog and events we see in the finished product but the excisions are fascinating in themselves. What a country of blue noses we are. The scene in which HH has his first orgasm with Lolita on the Sunday living room couch is gone, for instance.Too much forbidden sex, although Lolita may be unaware of what happens. But the climactic killing of Quilty, with all its agony and its oceans of gore, is intact. It's okay to shoot a man in cold blood, to put innumerable holes through his naked body, and to show it realistically -- but don't touch a fourteen-year-old knee. The script presented here follows the novel far more closely than Kubrick's did. In some ways it's a weakness because a lot of what goes on in the novel isn't spelled out in the dialog, only in HH's descriptions of it, as Schiff points out. This requires that some original dialog be added, and the writers (who included at one point David Mamet) do a pretty good job of it. It's tough enough to squeeze a classic novel into the shape of a movie. Joseph Strick tried it with "Ulysses" and it was a dismal failure. Lyne's "Lolita" more closely approaches success.I was reminded of another attempt to shape a long and complex novel into a film: "The Caine Mutiny." In the book, Captain Queeg's paranoia gradually reveals itself in a series of related incidents of enough intricacy that they simply couldn't be depicted in the movie. So, early on, during the first wardroom meeting, Queeg's neurotic behavior is adumbrated in a single statement. He's describing his experiences in the Atlantic and adds: "The way those subs ganged up on us, I thought they had it in for me persnally." To me, that represents skillfull screen writing and the script of "Lolita" shows it in abundance.Yet, by sticking to the events of the novel as closely as it does, the script misses something. It misses the same thing that Strick's version of "Ulysses" did. "Lolita" is, at base, a serious and even tragic story, but not as HH tells it. A few earnest passages aside, it's hilarious. But the script can't capture most of the comic turns taken by Nabokov's prose. What little humor there is, is confined to a few brief moments -- the mix-ups over HH's name, for instance. At the Beardsley School for Girls the headmistress addresses him as "Professor Himmler." And at the Enchanted Hunters, he coldly informs the clerk that "the name is not Humbug but Herbert -- I mean Humbert."And, man, does this script need some of the novel's humor. Kubrick at least had a non-canonical Peter Sellers in five different roles. (Some were more successful than others.) And it had an African-American hotel porter wrestling with a fold-up cot that insisted on reverting to its more compact form.Lyne's movie has none of Sellers' outrageous hamminess and no slapstick. And the absence of that ludic element turns the script into a somewhat gloomy love story. The moody musical score helps keep it there. So does the photography which is too often dark, foggy, and rainy, whereas Nabokov's novel was full of sunshine, beaches, vast furrowed plains, and craggy mountains.Okay. At its base, it's a tragedy. We know that. But why remove the one element that makes it more than that? I guess, in a way, it can't be helped. HH was pretty snotty, and contemptuous of almost everyone he met, but that was all internally edited by him. Outwardly he was polite and a little distant in a proper aristocratic way. His demeanor was phony but deliberately so, and the irony of the contrast between his amused contempt and his interactional delicacy is gone.I suppose this is about as good as it can get. There is always so much more to a work of fiction than what we see on the screen, at least as far as a classic work like "Lolita" is concerned. Hitchcock's movie of "Psycho" was actually an improvement over Robert Bloch's unimaginative story. No comment on those who find the novel or either film version offensive because the story is an endorsement of pedophilia, or because it encourages statutory rape or something.

By "Lolita Saga" I mean not just Nabokov's fairy tale (as he says all great novels are) but the story of how the novel and the films of Lyne and Kubrick came to be. From Nabokov's novel onward, all attempts to tell the story of the doomed Humbert and the doomed Lolita (and the doomed Charlotte and the deservedly doomed Quilty) have faced headwinds from cowardly money-men and ignorant critics and censors who condemned with their eyes and ears as primly closed as their minds. Lyne's film fortunately survived those gales. It is also worthwhile to note how Lyne's film diverges from this screenplay. Some of the scenes cut from the movie appear as "Bonus Material" on the DVD. Others just disappeared. Others were changed for filming. But all are part of the overall story of the film, and the (somewhat) conflicting visions of it's contributors.I have a couple of nits to pick with Schiff, however. He states in the introduction that he shut himself off from earlier efforts: "My source material was the novel itself". Yet there are places where Schiff's screenplay follows Kubrick's film and/or Nabokov's screenplay but conflicts with the novel. For instance, Humbert's reason for coming to the US in the novel is that his deceased uncle's will promised him a sizeable monthly stipend if he would come to the US and pretend to take an interest in the business. Mark Twain (and Jimmy Buffett) would say Humbert was a "Remittance Man", a black sheep paid to go away and stop embarrassing the family. In Nabokov's screenplay and Kubrick's film Humbert is a writer and distinguished scholar who comes to the US to lecture at Beardsley College. Schiff's screenplay (and Lyne's film) follow the earlier film and screenplay, not the novel.More grievously, he says Dominique Swain "...wasn't quite beautiful". Now maybe I'm one of those "tortured artists" who know a nymphet when they see one and Schiff isn't. But there are 50-odd screenshots within Lyne's film in which Dominique Swain appears not only as beautiful but as heart-stoppingly so. Schiff's description might fit DS as she appeared in her later films, but to me part of the mystique of the Lyne film is that he cast Dominique Swain as Lolita while Swain was in her all-too-brief "nymphet stage", then she moved on like a Nabokov butterfly, fortunately leaving behind for us her magnificent portrayal of Lolita, recorded for the ages.As Humbert (or is it Nabokov?) says in finality, "And this is the only immortality you and I may share, my Lolita".And so it is!

I love this version of Lolita, so when I saw there was a book that contained the screenplay, I was thrilled! It was so much fun reading through the script and seeing what was improvised by the actors and what scenes ended up being cut out of the film. The introductions by Jeremy Irons and Adrian Lyne were a little short, but it was great to read what they had to say about the film.I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Lolita the book or film, or anyone who's just looking to read a great screenplay.
